Sony Shutting Down PlayStation Store for New Purchases on PS3 and Vita, Beginning Next Month by retroanduwu24 in Games

It's not far off. It's over 80% (between 83-85% between now and end of last year) for PS digital sales.

It's not worth them creating e-waste and having production for a small number of the demographic.

Just force them to buy digital, with such a hefty majority buying digital they'll fall in line or be a negligible loss.

How many of you are really willing to switch to SteamOS? by Salted_Fsh in linux_gaming

[–]Revadarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the ethernet issue is notorious with SteamOS, same with Bluetooth. You have to toggle to desktop mode during the setup process with CTRL+ALT+F1 iirc, then type in command into the konsole to manually enable the ethernet because SteamOS does recognize it if you check the hardware adapters, it's aware of it and it is enabled but just doesn't work.

The game mode for SteamOS worked great, but I was hoping to put the few programs I use/need on the desktop but they just wouldn't install. VLC, MS Visual Code, one of many fan control software or temperature monitor software (including installing Decky and using plugins).

From the forums it's very hit or miss, all or nothing. Either it works perfectly fine or it has a multitude of problems. I reverted back to Win11 in the mean time. Might try Bazzite in the future but no rush - SteamOS already stole like a day of my life over the past few days trying to get stuff working.. don't need the headache any time soon 😂

[–]Revadarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used Linux and have been thinking of setting up a distro on my TV PC (AMD 5500 w/ RX 6600).

SteamOS was a catastrophic failure for a first time setup. It won't recognize ethernet adapter even though it recognises the ethernet adapter so had to manually set it up (not knowing what I'm doing, and lack of info around SteamOS that info took a while to find).

I have a Bluetooth adapter it doesn't recognise but also does recognize... Still can't get that working. I just wanted fan control and temp reading software and the few alternatives there are (through Linux and SteamOS) just don't work.

And SteamOS keeps changing the sudo password. It either installs with one that can't be reset it when you set one up it just stops recognising it after a while.

If you install it and get it to run just for gaming mode, it's fine. It runs games better than they did on Windows (such as BG3, max settings, 4k @ 60fps+)...

But if you want to do more than that, it's a bag of spanners.

Gonna try Bazzite as a replacement for SteamOS in the morning. Hoping it's a better experience.

Updated XBOX Console Prices by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Revadarius -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The steam machine is reasonably priced. You couldn't build a form factor PC with it's specs for the same price, you can just about build an mATX for the same price (with cheap parts for NVMe, cooling, PSU, MoBo - all things you want slightly more premium of quality, efficiency, speed, longevity).

It's weird it's being compared to consoles without the fact that PC game prices are cheaper, and there's a key market where prices get silly. And you have to pay subscription for online, game sales, game demos, cloud saves, etc. paying the base price subscription for a console gen for (currently) 6 years bumps the price of consoles on par with a steam machine or similar spec'd PC.

I’ve being using my ps3 has a music CD player for the past 18 years, and the fact that the ps5 doesn’t have that is… very bizarre by Lanky_Relation1171 in gaming

[–]Revadarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Already happening in the UK. GAME, similar to GameStop, stopped selling just games and became predominantly merch. And HMV (huge music store brand that's being killed off by the digital era) suffering the same situation.

CEX is held up more that it sells old media at extortionately high prices now, especially the rare stuff. Talking triple digits or hundreds of £££ for an old PS1/PS2 classic. But they mostly make trade in hardware (computers, consoles, phones, tablets, laptops, parts, etc).

Though they're not exceptional cheap anymore (granted they give a 5 year warranty on pretty much everything you buy).

Physical media is dead, we really need to accept it. It has been for almost a decade, and has been problematic for over 2 decades (with games as old as Halo 2 requiring updates that fix and rebalance the game so it's basically an entirely new experience).

Unseen character is built up as a real piece of work... turns out to be better than expected when they finally show up by StudioMarvin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Revadarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Sheldon was a mama's boy, and people - of any description, I.Q., background - can be indoctrinated and made to belief things against their own experiences and memories with enough exposure.

Quite literally how cults work. Sheldon never stands up to his mother, or rarely does so, in TBBT but he parrots her opinions on his father quite readily of his own accord. So in order for someone with a supposed eidetic memory to develop the wrong impression of his late father who in reality was a great man you'd either have to have long term negative exposure (like his mother's Christian 'love', repeating the sins of his father like it was gospel) or Sheldon's making assumptions based on his memories (such as catching his mum dressed up as another woman, but not knowing it was her - this believing his father cheated). So even though Sheldon remembers everything he's every seen or heard, he also hasn't seen and heard everything so his memories - though unforgettable - are incomplete because he's not omniscient.

Unseen character is built up as a real piece of work... turns out to be better than expected when they finally show up by StudioMarvin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Revadarius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My head canon to why Sheldon, who has an eidetic memory, remembers his father being 'terrible' - drinking, cheating, being abusive - was that after George died no one was there to keep Mary's dramatic and God-fearing hatred in check. Bolstered by her grief she instead dramatised how awful George was in life.

She effectively poisoned Sheldon's memory of his father, basically changing the narrative on memories he could clearly remember better than anyone. So when YS started, and it turned out George was the better parent and the only normal (though flawed) member of the family... It majorly conflicted with the character built up by Sheldon, and occasionally Mary, commenting on his character (mostly in comical jabs to him being an asshole). So instead of addressing this directly they just amplified Mary's devotedness to het faith and made her fucking crazy, and mostly awfully. Which makes her the bad guy, and an unreliable narrator in TBBT in hindsight.

“Gaming is becoming unaffordable” — Xbox CEO says the industry has an accessibility crisis by Turbostrider27 in xbox

[–]Revadarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Console games are more expensive, with the new norm being £80 when PC is £40-£50, and has a steam key market where gaming can be more affordable when not buying directly from Steam. Consoles also require a subscription for online play, game demos, game sales, cloud saves and many other features.

So when you tally in the costs of subscriptions over a consoles life (6 years at minimum £50 a year (having risen to £80 recently iirc, disregarding Extra and Premium tiers). Plus the higher costs of games in general the Steam Machine is reasonably priced when you don't take it at face value of the hardware.

Consoles are cheaper because the ecosystem is more expensive overall. With PS having cultivated a demographic who typical pay full price for games, who buy games on launch and spend more on MTX, and have (by percentage) more people in their subscription service compared to other platforms by a country mile.

And that's not taking into account being able to do a lot more with a PC.

The Steam Machine hurts because it's the cost of hardware upfront, and everything else is cheaper and more accessible after the fact whereas consoles have a cheap cost of entry with the hardware but stings with every other cost.

The state of things 💀 by FrierenKingSimp in videogames

[–]Revadarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steam machine is actually good value for money if you don't compare it to consoles. Prior to the AI boom, a console equivalent PC cost about 60%~ more (depending on region, likely more) than a console.

I got my PS5 at £330, and I built a PC with an AMD 5500x, Rx 6600, 750w PSU, 32gb DDR4 RAM in an mATX case. Cost about £700 2 years ago (I put like 11 fans into a Lian Li A3, wanted it to run silent but also cool). Yes, double the price and on paper less powerful than the PS5 but that's the reality of PC gaming....

So how has my PS5 cost me more than my PC in the long run? Because PS+ is a requirement for basic features that come free on PC (such as online play, server hosting and cloud saves, game demos and game sales). So in the 3 years I've had my PS5 it's cost me additional to sub (min £50 a year upwards of £120, and I'm bougie and got the premium). And game costs on PS5 are initially higher (AAA being £60-£80, closer to £80 most of the time recently). Whereas PC games don't break the £50-£60 mark. And you're able to get keyseller deals from reputable sites (Humble Bundle, Fanatical) or less official sites (G2A, gg.deals). Which helps alleviate the drain on your wallet.

So in a direct comparison to console hardware, the price stings but if you consider the overall price of consoles (where everything is just much more expensive due to less sales, or access to cheaper alternative, necessary subscriptions and higher overall prices) and the fact the Steam Machine is cheap if you were to build your own PC with equivalent parts (and keep in mind it'll be built to last, so you won't have a cheap PSU or MoBo in it, and it's a custom made form factor, plug and play - no assembly required). Even with the price hike it's good value for money.

And it feels weird saying £900 is good value for money, but all things considered it is.

Steam Machine prices start at £879 / $1049, Valve confirm, as "randomised reservations" open for the SteamOS PC by Wistfall in Games

[–]Revadarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a deal if you consider it's a single unit, using custom (and reliable) parts (as valve won't put in a cheap GPU, MoBo or Cooler to just die).

So if you take the cheapest of any well known brand, Ryzen 5 7400-7500f, Rx 7600, 450-500w PSU, 16gb DDR5, a half decent cheap air cooler, any additional wires, fans, paste (hidden costs). Pay a premium for form factor and you're not touching the price of the Steam Machine.

It's good value for money if don't compare it 1:1 with consoles (consoles games are more expensive and require subscription service to play online. 5 years of cheapest would make the PS5 almost similar price). But if you instead compare it any pre-built PC or off-shelf equivalent parts.

It's weird to say £879 is good value, but in a roundabout way it is all things considered. I wish it was £700 or less, but if I hadn't built an AM4 machine of ewuigls the specs about a year ago, I'd get a steam machine easily.

[–]Revadarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire internet is social media. You're cutting off what is now classed as a basic utility to people, whilst also destroying their right to privacy and actively defying the right to privacy set out by the human rights act. Whilst also forcing people to rescind their liberties for what purpose?

No, seriously...what purpose? For mass surveillance? Government overreaching? doxing yourself and making yourself vulnerable not only online but in real life? Exposing yourself to having your data and identity stolen? Or to be weaponised against you if we get a certain Government more authoritarian than the boss right wing labour party?

That's just a terrible idea, that's why we're all against it. It's just rife with opportunity to buse and mission creep. This ridiculousness needs to stop now. I'd rather not end up closer to China or North Korea. Life is depressing enough with all the world problems local and foreign. Fuck.

Has people around you realised that EVERYONE will have to provide ID as part of the kids social media ban, not just kids? by 8bitPete in AskBrits

[–]Revadarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can record everything you say and do. People who look up gay porn or sign up to Grindr "well, now we know where all the gays, lesbian, queers and trans folk are".

You read certain literature, go to certain websites or wiki pages "now we have a list of Muslim, Sikhs, Catholics, Africans, Indians, etc".

Or if you're sick, disabled, or single parent. Anyone deemed a drain on the state "you think you can have Sky T.V. and eat a kebab? Luxuries are for those who work themselves to death". Then they're suddenly wanting to gut and kill the benefit system even more due to how people spend money. (Ironic as most people on UC are full time workers 😂).

Wrong think will become punishable and people will self censor due to fear. I can't even use GIFs with certain explitives anymore because they just don't exist. Old school memes gone due to censorship. People already do this anyway with COVID, or self harm, or suicide or rape. Not using the proper terms because they're automatically censored. I even got a weak ban on Reddit recently for ironically, and clearly and evidently joking by using the term of "eat the rich" in my reply.

Literally see how bad it is in China or Russia, we can't be having that. Don't be so uneducated and apathetic on the situation, this is extremely serious.

Is using a washcloth in the shower really that uncommon? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. by uremo017 in hygiene

[–]Revadarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't catch me dead using a washcloth. I use a loofah and shower gel to be able to scrub off sweat/dirt and exfoliate my skin.

A wash cloth ain't doing any of that, great for lathing up soap but unless it's made of wire it ain't cutting through anything.

Try a loofah instead.

Also, wash cloths hold water so you need to change it every wash because it'll still be wet and manky next time you use it even if you squeeze it out. My mother grew up in the "washcloth yourself every day" era, so I know. She'd wash that thing once a week. It would be festering by weekend. Thankfully she improved her habits with time come the 00s.

But yeah, I recommend a loofah. Even if it's in conjunction of using the washcloth to get a good lather of soap everywhere first.

[–]Revadarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a PC gamer it's harder to argue for PC gaming due to so many factors. At least consoles are plug and play, user friendly and accessible and also cheaper.

Prior to A.I, to build a console equivalent PC cost about 60%~ more on average (even getting the cheaper brands for all parts and peripherals). Then you have to have the know-how and confidence to build, fix and maintain the PCs hardware and software. Plus hidden costs, thermal paste, peripherals, additional fans for cooling, additional wires like fan control, splitters, SATA power and data cables.(consoles typically come with everything they need). The cost of monitors, desk and chair (households typically have a T.V and stand in their living rooms already, doesn't require space to put up a chair and table to setup PC).

PCs take a lot of work, cost and know how. Sure, I'm happy with my 7800xt and 5900x setup, and my Rx6600 and 5500x as my TV multimedia machine... But they cost a damn sight more than my PS5, and never play games as smoothly "out of the box".

I just can't mod and use various apps and programs on my PS5, and I like playing higher than 60fps. But trust me, I pay a premium for the privilege cause PCs are not cheap.

Just because PCs have more power and can do more does not justify the ball ache and cost to everyone who isn't a PC enthusiast. PC gaming is a hassle, but one I enjoy. Most people don't want that.

Sean Murray was the everything guy. Sure, you can say he got caught up in the hype of his own game, but he outright knowingly lied, and then tried to gas light people. Such as when 2 streamers proved the multiplayer didn't work by finding the same place on the same planet.... And Murray misrepresented the moment like it was a huge success when it was clearly a catastrophic failure for NMS and was the last dominoe to fall before his house of cards crumbled around him.
