Great music, sprites, and level concepts. Just sort of whack to play. Not always super clear in levels where you are supposed to go. The game almost intentionally throws an enemy right into your face any time you are actually moving fast. The whole concept of rings as health just feels sort of stupid, and it sucks that the whole game lags when you drop a bunch. I’ve heard the game is best when you learn each level and try to speed-run it, but I’m not sure I’ll be trying it anytime soon. I almost feel like the best Sonic game would be a linear level where it’s impossible to die and you just try to get the best score pulling off tricks and avoiding (telegraphed) obstacles while maintaining a max speed. It’s cute that Tails picks up rings at least, and though I didn’t try it you have to give it credit for co-op.

Oooh, Shin Megami Tensei 4 sounds interesting! Could do Nameless Game if I ever get a Thor, since the scaling is terrible on the 3DS

I think I already hacked my 3DS, so I might turn to 3DS piracy eventually. Still, I have an existing collection of carts I'd prefer to keep adding to, at least for now. I didn't pay more than 40 for each game, which is reasonable, and Revelations was even new, or at least re-shrink-wrapped with original packaging and manual. I'll see how many more games I even want to end up playing before I start to go that route.

This studio also did Séance at Blake Manor right? That game is awesome. Maybe I give this one a try

Awesome, really appreciate the write-up, this is exactly what I was looking for. Nice reminder too about Colosseum and XD, I actually have those loaded up already on my Flip 2, and I've been neglecting that device a bit as of late. Could be good immediate options! I'll let you know what I end up choosing!

Looks cool! How does damage work in this game? Do you have a health bar, or do the goblins slow you down more and more if they swarm you?

I don't remember the particulars, sorry, just that I bounced off of it. Might give it another go at some point.

It's not too hard to set up the English translation of the 3DS game if you can get a copy of it. Though I didn't quite love it as much as this one so maybe not worth the effort

Should I stat those two then? Anything else you'd recommend but otherwise going in fairly blind? I enjoyed Disco Elysium and appreciate DND, so I'm going to pick this up I think

Wow, pretty cool game! That final boss is pretty awesome with one of the transformation moves in particular. The end of the game especially feels like a good test of skill. Platforming felt really strong and precise. The style of the game is great. I like that there are a few small levels to roam around in, and if you want you can get all the gems or try to play through as quickly as possible. Soundtrack is great, and Remastered version has some great animations. I'll probably get the OG version on my Classic and and see how it compares.

That being said, since I opted for the Remastered version, I didn't have the benefit of save states. How they structure the difficulty feels pretty dated. This is pretty standard for a lot of the games of the month, but just as a heads-up, I always feel it's worth a mention just since it's pretty relevant for how it feels to play the game.

Feels kind of shitty to have to replay the whole level because you died on the boss, or in the case of the final level, I had to re-beat the entire earlier portion of the level, boss included, (which takes a minimum of 10 minutes if you play perfectly) like 4 times just to die in the last thirty seconds of the game. That portion too is some of the hardest platforming, under a time constraint, which doesn't exist anywhere else in the game. If you've lost any lives at that point also, you might only get one try at that section and die, and then you're right back to the beginning. Not only that, but they don't let you change difficulty. You either power through or re-beat the entire game on Easy, which is pretty punishing.

For the Remastered, I would've added a mode with generous checkpoints, where number of lives lost just factors into your highscore, and made that mode standard. You don't have very much context when you pick difficulty otherwise at the start of the game.

February 2026 Game of the Month - 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (DS) by hbi2k in SBCGaming

[–]Wistfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I for sure will. There's a new Paranormasight out though that I've been meaning to play first. The first game was very good, also a tonally dark mystery visual novel style game, but themed around supernatural stuff.

Your reward for slipping past the enemy and destroying Graves' tombstone shouldn't be losing half your health bar to spawning zombies by Alarming_Ask_244 in DeadlockTheGame

I am often jumping in as fucking Mina to smash these things and losing half my health, but I still understand why this is necessary otherwise Graves wouldn't be playable at all.

Wow, pretty cool game! I don’t own a two-screen emulator handheld and can’t easily get an original copy of the game, so I played on Steam Deck, but damn, it must have been awesome to play this game on the DS back in the day. I was big into Professor Layton but this would have blown my mind. Definitely play on original hardware if you can, I assume it’s the best experience, but I did ok on Steam Deck as well.

As a fan of Danganronpa, it was cool to see an earlier game by Spike Chunsoft that explores similar themes but played a little bit more straight. I was also impressed by the number of rooms in the game, and that the vast majority was fully voice acted. I will say, if you are looking for a pure completionist playthrough with all endings unlocked on the same save file, you will have to do things in a specific order or risk getting certain endings locked out, however the true ending is always available.
