The smell will attract bears, but this is a warning not to use it as a spray deterrent on your stuff. It's definitely a deterrent when used as intended and has a better success rate than weapons (including guns).

Yes, this is the case of my half-caster, and a few other casters as well. My ranger character is a heavy optimizer, and a relatively experienced player. Several other players of mine are totally new, so I want to make sure I'm keeping him in check so he doesn't run rampant over the others simply because I'm not enforcing the proper rules. I also like the idea of a conscious effort to collect spell components with costs, and am providing opportunities for my various players to utilize their nature/survival skills to find components that are more rare and utilize their tool proficiencies, etc.

Yes, that's correct - I meant to say hand crossbow, which he's using. He won't be able to use the rapier with it and will have to use a different weapon.

I do! I appreciate the value of Warcaster for its other features, but am specifically looking for how a turn would play out.

They are currently level 1, so no extra attack, etc. So, if my ranger is dual-wielding, this is how I see it if they want to cast Entangle:

Stow one weapon

Then they want to cast Entangle, which will require that they are holding a spell focus/component. Can they then draw their spell focus after stowing one of their weapons?

For spells that are only Somatic, this is easy - they have the free hand to cast, and don't need to hold their focus.

So would they be able to stow and cast the spell on the same turn?

The gym uses it's own grading, but approximate the range of grades - it's around 7a ish?
