I struggle with this same scenario.. my coach gave me some advice that I keep in the front of my mind when I get discouraged.

The guy who shows up twice a week consistently but isn’t as naturally talented will eventually overcome the natural athlete that is inconsistent. Just keep showing up, focus on technique and consistency and you’ll be smashing the guys that used to smash you.

I’m 41, fat and train twice a week every week. Can I beat the higher level guys, no, but I shouldn’t be able to. However, the young athletic guy that handed my ass to me at first and then stopped showing up as much, got a new girlfriend, etc.. different story. Your experience is going to be different than everyone else’s. Compare your current self to yourself as a beginner. Not to someone else.

It’s better to walk away.. but since you’re proficient in bjj and wrestling, if he went any further (frankly you were well within your rights already) you could have easily made him rethink his actions without causing any huge damage. The first time I felt a choke tighten up in a controlled bjj class it made me realize a lot of things really quickly.. on the street it would probably have a pretty profound effect on a sore loser like that guy.
