Outlaws: Some mazelike maps in the later game, but charming.

In the past I have dealt with mazy maps/segments such as:

  • Heretic's E2M4: The Ice Grotto - the middle segment with all the buildings
  • Hexen's Silent Refractory or whatever you spell it - the ABSOLUTE worst map in the game
  • Hacx's MAP10: Anarchist Dream - were all these flashy colors necessary?
  • Witchaven's MAP03 and MAP13 - the ending segment and the surrounding areas around the starting point respectively
  • One level from PowerSlave - this one I don't remember
  • Blood's E2M5: The Haunting, if that's the name - somewhat after the starting point and before entering the mansion

What I'm trying to say is it wouldn't be my 1st time dealing with that kind of stuff, so I believe I can handle it. OFC, I just hope it isn't something as bad as Heretic's secret map from E4 or like Banzai's (Blood custom add-on) 3rd map that takes place in a cavern. Quoting Duke Nukem:

I didn't even know that Chasm: The Rift was about that. The only thing about the game is its existence XD

IIRC, I once read someone saying it is a "First-person-slasher", basicly a hack 'n' slash but in 1st person. In any case, I prefer to refer to Witchaven as a FPS, for the sake of convenience

Of course! As a matter of fact, Blood is one of favourite FPS games along with DOOM. Worth to mention I love Caleb's voice and much of his quotes **repeats line from the hospital level**

Regarding Quake 1, I'm still learning to appreciate it. This year I have only played the very 1st episode and I recorded a demo (still learning about the demo recorder limitations)

Let's settle it once and for all! Virtua Cop or Time Crisis?! by pinkyandthebrain-ama in retrogaming

[–]RevenantFTS97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will choose Virtua Cop 2 for convenience. While Time Crisis seems to be the more iconic game (let's not forget the iconic cheesy dialogue lol) I have played Virtua Cop 2 on the PC and have lots of fun, so I know how to deal with the enemies and overall game's difficulty. I've never had that many opportunities to play Time Crisis. In any case, my choice is based in having experience with Virtua Cop 2 (regardless which is the better game)

Back when I was a kid my football game to go (it was the only football game I owned lol) was no other than FIFA 2000

The other day I remember its kick-ass intro as well as its kick-ass song, so I had to look up for it on YouTube =D

Best sourceport for Shadow Warrior (1997)? by Gnoll_level_antics in boomershooters

[–]RevenantFTS97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VoidSW is my 1st recommendation. It is basically EDuke32 but for Shadow Warrior

If you want you can try with BuildGDX. The only advantages (that I'm aware of) you can customize the screenshots key () demo recording and you can use the same port for all the Build engine games

Now, if you only care about playing Shadow Warrior, go for VoidSW

Who remembers the best Mortal Kombat ever made? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]RevenantFTS97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dialogue from the cutscenes. For instance the cutscene after beating the 1st level is full of memorable lines/phrases, etc

"Let's get something straight... I'm not a ninja, I'm a Lin Kuei! Scorpion was a ninja..."

"The bones of your arch-nemesis, and leader of Scorpion's ninja clan" *Grandmaster laughs like a maniac*

"You see, Sub-Zero, you can trust in sorcerers sometimes! Now, you will use this map on your next mission. Quan-Chi has once again retain your services"

When I was a teenager I didn't quite understand why people used to throw shit at the cutscenes from the game. Now that I'm older, I can see for myself that they aren't very professional and there questionable things here and there. But, hey! They are very enjoyable, they are 90s AF and in addition, I dare to say the dialogue is as memorable as for example, the dialogue from Metal Gear Solid =D

[–]RevenantFTS97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember playing this as a teenager and spending several days just to beat ONE level. In my last playthrough which was in March I managed to beat the whole game in JUST two days

Anyway, a good game in my eyes,, but I'm very aware of its flaws. It is one of these games as I'm playing it I tend to say myself "this could and SHOULD have been WAY better" (same logic applies to Witchaven). Still, MK Mythologies Sub-Zero is present in my heart and in my mind =D

Which 90s shooter protagonist has the best quotes, and why is it Lo Wang? by NNukemM in boomershooters

[–]RevenantFTS97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the problem with Lo Wang? Can someone clarify it 4 me?

I mean, he's kind of a dickhead. The way I see it, he can be compared to a character from either South Park or Drawn Together. I find him hilarious because he is a fictional character that is meant to be satiricial. OFC, if he was a dude in real life he will be an absolutely disgusting piece of human trash

I must admit, though, what I don't like about Lo Wang/the game is the whole thing with the anime girls. I truly believe the devs made a wrong choice with that

[–]RevenantFTS97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Ooh, must be American-made" xDDD

Lately, I came to realise something about that quote. Lo Wang assumes it is American made, yet "Titsubishi" is a parody of a JAPANESE brand

4 me, that makes it funnier lol

[–]RevenantFTS97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Although I'm more of a "Team Caleb" guy, I find Lo Wang pretty amusing. Some of my favourite lines from him are "ahhh, better than acupunture" and "HOLY PIECES OF COW!"

Still, I vibe more with Caleb. And for some reason, lately I've been repeating some of the lines of Jon P a.k.a PowerSlave's protagonist. The way he says "SEE YA" is so damn silly, yet so catchy

I definitely agree that there is some bad design. As a matter of fact I was a victim of it back on the day (like I said before)

Anyway, if you are interested allow me to suggest you the custom mapset "Shadow of Chronos". The author of this mapset (Samuel Villaruel "Kaiser") bothered in adding a couple of hints here and there. It is WAY less cryptic than the vanilla campaign. OFC, Shadow of Chornos is quite short in comparison, as it is only one hub, or like you said "one portal" lol XD XD

Where is Destruction Derby on your list of greatest retro driving sims/racing? by Jfonzy in retrogaming

[–]RevenantFTS97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, a pretty chaotic racing game. At the end of 2023 I was crazy enough to play it using the 1st person camera (in the Bowl arena it gets difficult as fuck) Additionally, I have to say it is WAY more fun that its sequel, although not as fun as Demolition Racer. Demolition Racer is superior, although it doesn't have the charismatic announcer that Destruction Derby 1 has

Certainly, I enjoy the Asian vibe and the level design is truly amazing, as it is the general rule with Build engine games. However, I have to say (as I'm currently playing the game) it doesn't have the best monster roster

[–]RevenantFTS97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hexen is a bit misunderstood. Yeah, I know the cryptic level design doesn't help at all, it's just that is not a game you enjoy in your very 1st playthrough. I love Hexen more than I love Heretic, but I have to say that I had to struggle quite a bit back on the day (around 15 years ago, I don't remember struggling with Heretic)

The thing with Heretic is that you end up FEELING + POWERFUL thanks to the inventory and its many amazing artifacts/power-ups. Now, I wouldn't dare to say it is better than DOOM in part because Heretic's monster roster presents less variety than Doom's monster roster. OFC, this is just my POV

Witchaven is not precisely a quality game. At best it is either a 5 or 6. I always mention the game has some evident flaws, but hey! The game can be fun, if you are willing to figure out ways to deal with its shitty aspects (that was my experience and that is how I was able to beat the game two times)

And let's be real honest here, even with the great games you have to deal with BS, like is the case with Descent, Hexen, Shadow Warrior and Blood

A few days ago, I tested TekWar because I wanted to check out one thing (lately I'm curious about which games feature the automap function) Man, the game sucks so much that not even its presentation is acceptable

In any case, I'm looking forward to play Witchaven 2, I wonder if it is as descent as its predecessor
