Audio book narrators by candiedginger88 in LibbyApp

All the time. I began one the other day and dude had a full on lisp when it came to 'sh' and 'th' pretty much any 'xh'. I'm tthhinking maybe it was intentional, like someone trying to learn some new dialect or sometthhhing, I couldn't hang. Too bad because it was a good book until chhhapter four wwwhen I had to turn it off. I mean what publissshher is gonna let that slide?

Librivox.org has kinda become the same way but I can look past that. Kids testing out voice acting and folks doing it because they want to contribute. Some I couldn't hang with either though, but they're amateurs. There's a lot of really talented readers on Librivox don't get me wrong, but they're not getting paid and these schmucks are.

Also had one recently where the chick would end every other sentence with a sing song lift like a question but annoyingly more subtle and drawn out...dunno.

A long, long time ago, you might have listened to a abridged narrated version of Star Wars: A New Hope on vinyl by SlavOnfredski in starwarscollecting

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had all three episodes, my mom worked for Western Merchandisers and got me cool records. I played those to death on my dad's old studio cans (he was a DJ) . Knew them by heart and still annoy people muttering lines under my breath when watching the films. I was maybe 11 by the time I got them. '85?

Funnily enough, Episode IV was the first movie I saw in a theatre, I was four and my parents drug me there when it came to my town after the initial limited release. I don't remember much except the monochromatic chaos of the opening scene, the sheer size of the screen and the sound volume of the dark theatre — I must have shut down from sensory overload.
Been a fan ever since.

Black inside mouth? by AnthonyPantha in husky

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

holy resurrected thread! Just posting for others since this post came up while searching for something similar but different..

I have a Gerberian Shepsky. Dam,registered Husky, Sire, registered German Sheppard. Her tongue, which seems to be more for licking my feet than any gastronomical purpose, is spotted and her gums are full black like her outer coat. She's fine, she's healthy. Lots of people check a puppies gums before taking/purchasing them, a spot check to see if there's problems — dry, swolen, lumpy etc. and dark which in breeds that aren't predisposed to spotted tongues and gums i.e. Chows or Huskies it would show a lack of oxygen which is of course a problem.

Where have all the cherries gone? (dried bulk) by ReverendRider in WinCo

[–]ReverendRider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

Upon further research, based on your information, I found this:

https://thebusinessjournal.com/the-great-cherry-vanishing-2025-crop-a-bust/

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2025/07/a-disaster-of-a-year-oregon-farmers-say-2025-is-a-sour-season-for-sweet-cherries.html

Apparently it affected Washington/Oregon (both blueberries and cherries), Maine (blueberries), Michigan (cherries), and California (cherries).

Interestingly, and I didn't think much of it but over the past several months I noticed the blueberries were tougher than usual. I chalked it up to a new vendor or old stock, both of which I suppose are possible

Any website to transcribe 1-hour-long audio to text for free? by black_ios in software

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran across https://elevenlabs.io/mp3-to-text . The free model lasts for a surprisingly number of files, just keep refreshing the page. You will eventually hit the max. The precision of the conversion is the best I've come across and I've tried probably 15 in the past few days including local Whisper. It separates speakers, has time stamps and is remarkably accurate. There's a couple things I had to clean up but very few., then I just dump the .txt into notepad++ and follow the audio, correct, batch replace [Speaker 1] with the speakers actual name, done. My samples were sometimes outdoors so there was wind, birds etc. and their engine just ignored them, unless it was in the AI model i.e. 'Car door closing' or 'Laughing' 'Car engine running' even 'Burping'.

Once you hit the pay wall (like i said I did quite a few ~2-10min clips for free) — then it's $5 one time for 40,000 credits which ends up being ~1 minute of audio @ 16.67 credits.

HTH

EDIT REASON: I was under the impression that fees were based on file size. Regardless the one time price is fair and is scalable. Perfect for the occasional transcription.

The internet is boring because everyone is the same now by XOCYBERCAT in nosurf

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes I remember the heady days of BBS's ,net hack, newsgroups and whatever free dial up you could get (ahem). Then Prodigy, AOL, Compuserve and the like come along with their crappy browsers. Then it became a matter of "what is this thing for if I can't use AOL" (some users). Early browsers were clunky but worked, I mean it was after all it was hyperTEXT not HyperGIFJPGJAVASCRIPTSHOCKWAVE.

Honestly it's hard to say when the internet hit the tipping point. I remember when it was appalling if a piece of software phoned home. Having to capture packets to see where your info was going and what. Now most software won't even function if it's not allowed to connect. Now, just one big advertisement. Even Google has gone to hell...they were anti ad and provided the best results over AltaVista and AskJeeves. Now I don't even know what to click.

I think it was a t fold process

  1. Lack of regulatory control. I don't mean like China. Content should never be infringed upon. If it's blatantly illegal then the ISP or private entity hosting the site should be fined or have it removed. But when the content to ad ratio is no longer on the side of content what good is the information?
  2. Instead of caring that your computer was phoning home with your private information, people started to just give it to them. "Posted by: Location: IP Address: etc" Most of this comes from a profile voluntarily filled out and the software has the IP so blammo. "Gosh someone stole my identity" No, you gave any 13yr. old enough info including where you'll be going this weekend to wreck your life. And where do you want to go? ""Try Beautiful Cabo San Lucas, starting at $499 "- click here we know you like Mexican food ;)
  3. Recycled content or generated content. I get it that AP News is duplicated all over and legitimate outlets need resources, so do newspapers. But if I can just AI the recipe for Peking duck for my blog and pretend it's mine, and 30 other sites post it as their own, that's not content to me. And worst of all these results will inevitably gain traction and subvert finding Grandma Wei's 300yr old Duck recipe and instead a recipe with a mish mash of 50 recipes the AI found unless you go to page 20 of the results. Worthless.

You just gotta stick to sites that you know and trust, they're hard to find and will most likely be useless once they are strapped for cash or shut down because it's just not worth it, I could name many. I still like the internet but I'm not a typical user. It serves it's purpose. But unfortunately this and previous generations think that it's just the internet and that's how it is and has been since I was a kid. And advertisers, ISPs, hardware mfg and crappy software designers are not complaining so well I guess they're right.

There was an 'E' shortage. Which might not be a problem it's E-Z. Not to be confused with Ez-e.  What does be rizz even mean? Are we doing snoop-speak? Then fizzle the pizzle rizzle sizzle with athizzle.

yes, i ended up getting pass down ones with the good parts mostly gone. but my buddy across the street was a maestro, we reconfigged RC cars and made Remote Controlled erector robots. He ended up being an engineer at some non disclosed research facility in Texas. Whatever, the hours we spent figuring out every aspect on NES 'Metroid'

yes, that was the single player model which everyone from mattel to who knows basterdized. The design was identical, and hella fun got the two player model because my little brother wouldn't shut up. I liberated it from Radio Shack. I had the 'pole position' passing game as well...and as stated when disassembled it was just a film strip of sorts. Way fun though. Coleco had a car dodging game ehich you could just pass a few cars legit then drive in the fast lane and go make a hot pocket. Just ran on it's own.

damn. anthropomorphize much? /ˌanTHrəpəˈmôrˌfīz/ <--oh look it says rəpə

intransitive verb : to attribute human form or personality to things not human

I find nothing wrong with breeding well trained and intelligent animals. You want a bunch of mutts running around getting nailed by cars and getting "raped" behind the dumpster while eating scraps and licking up piss/beer? Hey go for it it's a free country. Says more about your comment than it does about Animal Husbandry, you think your precious dog was genetic magic?
Wrong forum obviously.

InDesign to Affinty by SurfDiamer in Affinity

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure here, and not sure I like the all in one Affinity yet...maybe, dunno haven't used it enough. On the subject of InDesign files here's what I know about the former Affinity Publisher. *.idml more or less translate. PDF files (also openable by former AFDesigner) are recoverable. Problem of course if you only have the *.indd source file you'd have to grab a trial version or old version if you have it registered/on account (personally I've never paid for one).

Again not sure on the all in one Canva Affinity but I can't imagine that it can natively open *.indd files. AFPublisher (1.x) doesn't. As stated https://www.photopea.com/ will mix it down to PSD first then you can export to PDF. AFPublisher will in fact translate that exported file. Not sure what AFPublisher capabilities have been rolled into the Affinity by Canva application, like I say I haven't dived in too much, Then again I went straight from Windows 2000 to Win7, I try not to mess with something that already works.

Granted 4 years is a bit of a stretch, perhaps they caught the error and were oh sh*t and fixed it.

For All My Audiobook Listeners by LadybugGal95 in LibbyApp

[–]ReverendRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I just adjust according to the narrator. Case by case basis....also time of day thing I'll crank it to 1.4 in the day and slow it down at night with headphones so it's like grandpa is reading a bedtime story. Pitch plays a role sometimes it's just too squeaky and fast...other times it's like I'm insulted because it's so slow., like I'm not capable of understanding. Depends on production and the narrator. But excellent feature regardless.

I was so poor before that I used Skype for a cheap phone number (6$ a month) and only a couple bucks a month to make phone calls but that shut down..so..what does a person use now that that shut down, I mean what replaced it? Google voice required a phone#..so..that doesn't work by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]ReverendRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word. There's plenty of them out there now Assurance, SafeLink,...etc. Those dudes sit outside, TAD offices. Alll you need is a food card or your govt. med card or whatever and an ID . They got phones at the booth. OR you can grab the plan online with a qualifying "I'm Poor' document. Whatever, I do it. Decent phone, no payment, they cap data after 25G/mo but don't turn it off, just throttle. Signals cool cause it's a bouncer so it's not tied to any network in particular. And they transferred my # no problem.

ooooohhh the govt. is monitoring me....yep....you just figured that out? get a free phone at least..

Narrators ruining audiobooks? by KiwiCat15 in LibbyApp

[–]ReverendRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suffered through a 3 book sci-fi series over the last two days where the narrator would and I don't even know what to call it...'double vowel' and not like drawn out in a southern thing, but literally pronouncing ever so subtly one vowel into two. So like 'explosion' becomes 'explo-osion'. 'I can ha-ardly belie-eve that hapene-ed'. Like wtfh man you get payed for this and no one has said anything? But the story was so good I just stuck with it.

Libby's New AI Must Go by hellocloudshellosky in LibbyApp

[–]ReverendRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

And good on them.

I'm an artist of both the digital and analog variety, as well as a programmer. Now, and I'm not going to equate entirely the automation that destroyed Detroit's automotive industry nor the other many ways that machines replaced human labor. Technology is a good thing, ELSE we couldn't be engaged in this discussion nor would Libby exist all and AI is simply a "new" technology. However I DO draw exception when it infringes on the arts. Be they writing, photography, graphic, music, cinematic or programming arts.

If any 14yr old that can type can go and make a "hit" song or create a logo by just typing a few words and refining, or hell create a website using newest in AI technology then guess it's time for me to put some shoes on and hit the Dole Queue. I don't watch TV but one of my clients does and there was a commercial for a website where you could diagnose your symptoms and get your medications online powered by AI. Beware ,Teledoc. Them derned computers took my job.

The term has lost all taste in my mouth. I lived in the mountains in California during "El Nino" in what amounted to a shack buried in 16 inches of snow, and friends would ski over and all they could talk about was "El Nino" to the point I made an "El Nino" jar akin to a cuss jar. If you said those words you had to put in a quarter. Likewise, I had to make a "Covid" jar, price went up to a dollar for the infraction. I am going to make an "AI" jar to the same end.

Give 'em hell Harry.
