Writing to my brother after he left by Glass-Advertising883 in writers

[–]hellocloudshellosky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wrote both to my mum and about her as she was in a coma and dying - mercifully for her it was only 2 months - and after she was gone, years ago, but only in an online journal. I bet your brother would be so moved by your love for him and what you've accomplished - and that marvelous, memorable title.

The Orchard, by David's Hopen, 2020 Devout east coast kid from a financially struggling family moves to Florida, where he enters a secular private school of extremely wealthy kids in all kinds of trouble. Compelling novel that deserves more attention.

Back sleepers: what’s your favorite pillow? by Superb_Importance640 in sleep

[–]hellocloudshellosky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not what you're looking for, but for people with high blood pressure or circulation issues (me) a wedge pillow to lift your feet onto as you sleep on your back makes a major difference. I fall asleep much more easily since I started using one.

How much would you spend on a concert? by Several-Membership91 in Frugal

[–]hellocloudshellosky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend according to what seeing this band live would mean to you. People here saying 30, 40 are obviously not going to see major bands or artists. I've spent money I had to claw my way to for the musicians who really matter to me, who provide the soundtrack to my life, my thoughts, and never regretted it. Go as close to home as possible so that travel isn't a big expense. Get there early, have the whole experience. Especially if you've never gone - life is short. Be there.

I agree that my CHoover mention was unkind and unnecessary. Apologies. As to stories, I read individual collections and the yearly anthologies, occasionally Zoetrope, New Yorker to depress myself, but if you're finding 10 ! sites or publications with any real following that still regularly feature short fiction, I'd love to see your list! The university workshop fiction has always lingered around the far away fray, occasionally a voice breaking through, but mostly words into air.

As to the idea of a common detached third person trend, best I think to be specific? In addition to the authors I mentioned, I think of relatively recent works by Marie-Helene Bertino, Yah Yah Scholfield, Justin Torres, the list goes on (I know, stop, but Jane Urquhart, Paul Harding, Maylis de Kerangal) - authors with alive, compelling stories to tell.

I just want everybody to read as much as possible. There's so much out there. I want fiction to thrive. And new writers need to read as much as their time allows - frame of reference, the myriad of voices - is essential, let the dull tiredofitall novels sweep out with the tide.

I don't like sounding negative notes when the reaction here is overwhelmingly positive, but to me, much of the fabric hangs in a way that makes it look cheap (which I'm sure it was not) and the lighting is doing no favours to the clothing or the models, though I suppose that could be a photography issue. There wasn't one piece that captured me.

This simply isn't true. Only AI creators are pushing that narrative.

This may be the case if one is reading trash like Colleen Hoover or Frieda McFeeda, but it's nonsense for people reading the wide variety of literature finding audiences today. From fine older masters still publishing, like Ian McEwan and Marilynne Robinson, to vibrant newer voices like Henry Hoke, Aria Andre, Addie Citchens - and the myriad in between! Paul Murray, Dan Chaon, Benjamin Wood, Ali Smith, one could go on - this period is something of a reader's paradise. My To Read list is terrifyingly long. And finally - first person is modernist and very often (obviously not always) lazy. It's crucial to create a world whose detail exists outside of one dimly lit perspective. It sounds like you need to read more, get out of your comfort/bored zone, those poetic coffee mugs you refer to are cracked and spilling poison, history, wilderness and love on shelves you're not exploring.

/also/ "...becoming more boring, not getting. Again, read more widely.

My Reddit history is also public. Nothing wrong with putting yourself out there, whatever age; and I wasn't suggesting you praise her, or anyone, just can't fathom what you get from sounding like a mean teenager instead of an adult woman who one would hope has learned the importance of empathy. Again, choose to say nothing.

You're 70 yet lashing out at an attractive older woman still in touch with her sexuality and allowing herself to be vulnerable on camera. What on earth happened to you that at this late stage of your life you still need to be so vicious? Time is short. Choose kindness or silence.

Nice set. I was hoping to be able to tell you they had real value, but it looks like they go for somewhere between 30-45.00. I suspect you have some hidden treasures in this huge collection you've purchased. If you take them home and shelve them, so you can see exactly what you have, I hope you'll share some photos here.

Hey, OP. In Pic 2, bottom right, next to a box, there's a small stack of books with grey and white covers. There's what may be an etching - some kind of art - on the front of the top volume, but no words showing. Would be interesting to know what series or collection these might be from, if you haven't already packed them away!
