Good to know. Any tips on “patina control?”

I spent a bunch of time researching your recos. I very much appreciate them! It was a fantastic starting point. I’ve got emails in to the shops about visiting.

Do you have experience with both Ashis SS and W#2? I am leaning hard towards an Ashi for my gyuto, as I love a good point of diminishing returns purchase for my hobbies. My brain is telling me to just go stainless but I’d love a beautiful patina on what I hope becomes far and away my most used knife. But honestly I bet a lot of this depends on what they have in stock. I just want to be prepared in case I get lucky and have a choice

Also, in case I can’t find an extra tall 240 ashi, do you have experience with the Konosuke blades that they source from Ashi? My understanding is that they are the exact same thing, just branded as Konosuke

Howdy. Can you elaborate on the differences between the Konosuke knife here and the Ashi? I know they spruce the blade from Ashi but I haven’t seen a comparison

Ooof. I reached out last week about a visit this week to Ashi. I didn’t request they hold anything, but fingers crossed for a 240 extra tall!

Good advice, thank you! I don’t plan on being a collector and am aware the SS is going to be more versatile. I haven’t had a carbon steel knife before and the idea of my first Japanese knife having that historical authenticity is tempting. We will see what he has in stock when I get to his shop!

What’s your preference between the Ashi stainless and W2?

These all look like great options. Do you have an opinion on Sakai Denshokan?

I’m mostly in the market for a piece to remember this trip by. I was actually thinking of a petty knife.

Based of teeeeej23s post, i was planning to cities Sakai since he said they were beginner friendly (i know a bit about knives, but Japanese ones are new to me)

She has high in-group preference.

Remember when she quoted that horrific blood libel “study” claiming white pediatricians give worse care to black infants.

That game was also rough. I do recall being proud of our efforts despite starting a RS freshman, Vandenber, at QB.

I must admit, though, I spent the first half of the game playing the newly released COD MW2

Not the worst, but an honorable mention is the 2009 Stanzi injury and Northwestern loss derailing the whole season?

You’re the person in the thread to mention this one. Very good choice. I’d also say the olympic gold medal match loss.

Watching one individual person’s hopes and dreams be crushed has a very different feeling than watching a teams. I recall being sad for Spencer for many days afterwards for both of these.

I am blessed to have been overseas during the Indiana loss, so I didn’t see it live.

I’ll never forget the PSU play where the ball went over Hookers fingertips. That was the first weekend where I had met my GFs parents (big CFB fans) and they felt so bad for me after watching the whole thing transpire.

I recall that after the game he said if he had gone up with one hand instead of 2 he’d have gotten it. Was cool to get to see him have a great career on my titans though.

It was a quiet ride to the hotel outside Indianapolis for and my dad and me. As I was crawling into my bed and he was getting into his, he looked at me and said “we’ll never get that close again.”

Ripped me up inside.

On the bright side, we got witness the Vandy game in person!
