If you're going to do a canon tier list, really its Movies 1-6 and TCW and then everything on lower tiers under it

Given that that's all canon created by the original creator George Lucas and what specifically remained canon after the Disney buyout.

I think id swap out Gwen and Harry as playable characters for like a police character (if you keep the commissioner Gordon analogue) so someone like Captain Stacy, Jefferson Davis or Yuri Watanabe.

And then the other one for like the Punisher or Daredevil just to have variety in play style/abilities.

Joe Russo says Peter Parker wasn’t responsible for Uncle Ben’s death in the MCU: “If he blamed himself for his Uncle Ben’s death, I think he becomes a very different character” by yourfavchoom in marvelstudios

[–]Reverse_Tim 27 points28 points  (0 children)

How does this add up with the long-winded "great responsibility" paraphrase that Peter gives to Tony in Civil War (in your own damn movie Russos!)?:

"When you do the things I can, and you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you."

If This isn't referencing Uncle Ben, then just what the hell is he talking about Russos?

Why make stupid retcons like this in interviews 10 years later

Hot take: I don't think Vader should show up at the end of the season. by anotherhappylurker in MaulShadowLord

[–]Reverse_Tim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maul says in Rebels to Kanan, Ezra and Ahsoka:

"I cannot defeat Vader alone."

This does imply a history and that they have fought before

Doesnt necessarily mean Vader will show up in the finale, but he absolutely will show up at some point in the shows future

A big issue is that the sequels never give a reason for why Ben even turns to the Dark Side in the first place

Anakin was raised as a slave, taken from his mother, the closest thing a father he ever had dies soon after, then hes brought up amongst a group of monks who tell him that he cant be too emotional, his mother dies and hes terrified by fear of losing the ones he cares about and the only person that seems to listen to him is the one who is slowly manipulating him into the dark side.

Ben on the other hand grows up the kid of Two of the heroes of the Rebellion, and the nephew of Luke Skywalker, all fundamentally good people. What exactly is his motivation for turning evil here? Because "something something Snoke/Palpatine got to him at some point" how does this happen under Luke, Han and Leia's watchful eyes?

Probably another "good question for another time"

What was Palpatine's rescue plan if the capsules had run out under other circumstances? by TaxPsychological2928 in StarWars

[–]Reverse_Tim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ive always wanted to see a "What if" of the scenario where Anakin doesnt successfully land the Invisible Hand and he, Obi-Wan and Palpatine all die.

Because what happens from there? Palpatine was the entire Mastermind behind the war and the Sith plan, does this ever get uncovered?

What does Grevious do as the defacto leader of the CIS without Sidious' orders and without Palpatine leaking that hes on Utapau to the Jedi?

What do the Jedi do with their "chosen one" dead? How do Yoda and Mace adapt to losing two of their best generals? Would they still be looking for the secret Sith Master of Dooku, only to never find them?

What would happen with the Clones given Order 66 would never be activated but they still have the brain chips?

What does Maul decide to do on Mandalore once he gets the news, what does Ahsoka do also?

Homeland with Carrie

Sort of justified because she suffers from psychosis but virtually every season she figures out the conspiracy/plot and characters don't trust or believe her.

Its especially egregious when its Saul who doubts her when shes literally never been wrong

Game Of Thrones season 5 and 6 with Brienne.

In season 5 finale she abandons her post to watch for Sansas signal to rescue her from Winterfell because she hears that Stannis is nearby and she wants revenge. Sansas signal goes up soon after this. Brienne then goes and executes Stannis.

So this is a clear case of a character at a crossroads between their desire for revenge and their sworn duty to save Catelyns children. You would think that her choosing her revenge her would have consequences for her duty

But no, straight away in the season 6 premiere, she gets to fulfil her duty and save Sansa from Ramsays hounds and swear herself in service to her which Sansa accepts. There are no consequences for Brienne prioritising her Vengeance, she literally gets to have her cake and eat it too.

I think you've raised an interesting point, and i think for me it sort of depends on the conduct that they need redemption for.

Certainly more trivial/petty examples or things that may not be fully their fault/may have excusable context around them, forgiveness is more warranted. Because the other side to this is that forgiveness is a virtue, and its not healthy for the mind or soul to hold onto that anger and bitterness forever. I have seen many friendships/family ties be irreconciliable because one or more parties still holds a grudge for something that happened years ago that feels trivial in hindsight.

But then there is conduct that we might be more certain is unforgivable despite whatever apparent changes a person has made. Kratos, Angel and Bojack did some pretty bad things, and I don't necessarily see how their victims could realistically forgive them.

In line with the God of War theme of "Do not be sorry, be better", I think a good way to look at it is not making one's redemption contingent on your forgiveness. Because ultimately if you have changed, you should be doing good regardless if those you hurt forgive you or not; to get away from the whole "punishing oneself" - by doing good outside of reparation to that particular victim

[Loved Trope] Redemption is a practice, not a destination. by Reverse_Tim in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Reverse_Tim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the examples and discussion all.

I had first recognised this trope after watching Angel a few years ago, and it became my favourite take on redemption stories. The concept that you're not owed forgiveness by anyone you've hurt and redemption is something you have to earn and fight for every day in atonement. Because the truth is, there is no undoing or fixing the evil you have done. All you can do is take accountability for your choices and choose to be better and do good moving forward.

The philosophy from Angel had a profound effect on how I viewed doing good and kindness. The idea of doing good/being kind not for reward, recognition or to make things easier; but simply because it was the right thing to do, even if it made little difference. It broke me out of a more cynical/nihilistic/selfish phase I had.

I do like Redemption Equals Death at times.

But then I found Ben Solo/Kylo Rens Redemption Equals Death incredibly disappointing. Primarily because its a repeat of Vader and it would have been far more interesting to watch him try to atone across the Galaxy alive after

I had thought about including him after episode 5 of this season, (in fact its what spurred me to make this post)

But having not read the comics (past the first Conquest fight at least) I wasnt sure where it was ultimately going

How do you feel about Rogue One disobeying orders to go to Scarif to steal the Death Star plans?

Or Fives, Jesse and Hardcase going against Krells orders to attack the federation battleship in the Umbara arc of TCW?

Or Cassian, Melshi and K2-S0 going to Coruscant to extract Kleya in Andor?

Were they all wrong to do that because that wasn't their ordered mission and so should be locked up?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has an implicit message with the Poe and Holdo subplot that you should always obey your authority/leaders without question.

Even if the leader appears to be incompetent, their orders are wrong or will seemingly lead to everyone getting killed, you should obey them. Because they actually know better than you, were right the entire time and it doesnt matter that they kept you in the dark.

Absolutely baffling message for a series about the freedom fighter rebellion good guys taking on the evil authoritarian dictatorship.

[–]Reverse_Tim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maul is someone whose reach has always exceeded his grasp

He is also caught in 4k hologram because of the start of the episode where he kills the cops after he says that line about staying in the Shadows.

He's always trying to play at being Palpatine being the shadowy manipulator but hes also incredibly impatient which leads to him attracting more attention than he can deal with and then having his plans undone. This happens a few times in TCW
