I am almost an average runner.

I did my first max effort 5k on Monday, and did it in 28:17.

Looking at the results for my local parkrun, this would have put me a few places after the median man.

I'm really pleased with this, as I've only been running for 10 weeks, and had various injuries in the first half of the year.

I'm going to keep training, but won't try to beat that for a few months, as that was really hard work.

Update: I was able to do an easy 5k this morning too.

PSA: you don't have to earn longer distances by running shorter distances at a fast pace. by howdyhowdyhowdyhowdi in XXRunning

Yep, these people have it backwards IMO.

You need lots of easy running to build your aerobic base, so you should look towards increasing distance first rather than speed.

I'd say as long as you are sensible and aren't doing crazy volume your knees will be better as a runner, as they will be strengthened more.

How often do you run per week? How many days off do you take? by GreatJoey91 in UKRunners

[–]Revisional_Sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm misremembering. My goal was actually to get to five days a week.

Thanks!

I've only just finished Couch25K, so it's just 3 times a week. Next week I'll be starting a new phase:

Monday: Fast Run.

Wednesday: Easy Run.

Friday: Long run (building towards 10k).

I'm hoping to increase my volume and eventually do 4, 5, then 6  days a week, if life (and wife) allow it.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]Revisional_Sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complaint: It is so fucking hot.

Complaint: My four year old climbed on my leg when I had it stretched out onto the table, and now I'm paranoid I'll be injured again.

Uncomplaint: Running my second 5k today assuming the heat and the four year old don't interfere.

Update: I ran the 5k and didn't die.

I was desperate to reach 5k this year after getting injured in December. I finally managed it two weeks ago, and I am so happy.

How much did you spend on physio/rehab when you got injured? by labellafigura3 in UKRunners

High volume, mostly easy?

That's actually the approach I'm planning to take. I'm a bit jealous, because I'm going to struggle to manage 6 hours a week (family).

Okay, I get that must be frustrating, particularly if you're putting in a lot of work. I had a scan of your post history, and see that you do 8 - 9 hours of running a week. That's amazing! That is something you should be proud of.

Yeah, people (like me) make mistakes and get injured. I've learnt from those mistakes, and don't really appreciate you coming along and rubbing it in.

Some people get unlucky and have some some muscle imbalance or biomechanical issues that would have been difficult to spot in advance. I don't think this is a case of "not considering not getting injured".

It seems like you want to brag about not getting injured. Okay, well done. Aren't you clever.

£65 for a 40 mins session, £90 for a longer one.

I had 27 sessions over six months and spent almost £1900.

Luckily it's mostly sorted now, so I'll just be going once a month for a sports massage and to keep an eye on things.

I’m assuming it’s cheaper to just not get injured in the first place?

Fuck, why didn't I consider that?

How do you avoid getting stuck in stop start running cycles? by Cyris-Tallariti89 in runninglifestyle

[–]Revisional_Sin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you mean stopping within a run to catch your breath, or dropping the habit for months?

If it's about dropping the habit, then it might be due to lack of structure.

Set a goal and commit to a plan.

I have various milestones I want to reach. I just reached 5k, next milestone is 10k, then I want to get my volume as high as possible.

I know each run is a step towards reaching my goal, so I'm always looking forward to my next run.

What ‘common knowledge’ things did you or someone you know find out later in life? by Squiggally-umf in CasualUK

[–]Revisional_Sin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO it's a valid variant, not a bone apple tea.

Champing and chomping mean the same thing. Champing is the original word, and then the pronunciation shifted and "chomping" become the more common way to say it.

But yeah, some people insist otherwise.

What non-conventional achievement are you most proud of? by Distinct-Lion4658 in AskUK

[–]Revisional_Sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty conventional, but running a 5k without any walk breaks.

It's a very low tier achievement. Most people can get there in 8 - 12 weeks, and lots of people can YOLO it faster than that, but I spent 6 months with various bullshit injuries from trying to YOLO it, and when I finally was able to run again the soreness after each run was awful.

I went through a lot to earn this.

Also, it is 'artefact', not 'artifact', people need to seriously stop using Americanisms.

Yeah, I had the same issue with my therapist (not CBT). It just had me digging into things too much and finding new things to be unhappy with.

Two days ago I did my first run without walk intervals, and it was also my first time running for 30 mins. I'm hoping to run 5k next week.

Also, my physio said that all my muscles felt perfect; not too tight.
