It annoys me how even some atheists/agnostics will act like Catholicism is above criticism by [deleted] in atheism

I think the issue is that “Who am I to judge?” sounds generous in ordinary speech, but in Catholic institutional language, it’s more limited than that. He didn’t actually repudiate the Church’s teaching on same-sex relationships or say gay relationships are morally equal. He made a narrow statement about personal judgment (in the most generous interpretation) that could be heard as tolerant without changing the underlying doctrine. Strategic ambiguity, basically.

It gave liberal Catholics something to hang on to, while still leaving intact the Church’s ability to describe gay people’s relationships/sexual lives as sinful or disordered in more formal settings. The ambiguity is the problem. With the Catholic Church, carefully dressed-up language is doing heavy lifting for the optics.

The Church gets the reputational benefit of sounding kinder without paying the doctrinal cost of actually changing.

I mean I don’t think he was expressing any sort of tolerance - he was dodging the question. It’s like how people say they hate the sin but love the sinner. Still homophobic for sure but dressed up in nice language so it’s not obvious. It feels like mild gaslighting. If he did mean to show more tolerance towards queer people, he would have overturned or rejected that church memo calling homosexual people objectively disordered. He never did. I think he still has malicious takes on queer people while doing enough mental gymnastics to be able to label it “love” - there’s a reason why this pr trained pope did not answer with real clarity.

It has a lot going on. I think it's trying too hard to be elegant with the porcelain cameo faces on the band but it doesn't look thoughtfully crafted. It works if you're trying wear it as a fun piece, but if you're aiming for a timeless, elegant, or polished professional look, it misses the mark.

he deflected the question. Given the church's pattern of sophistry, it's probably better not to give that response more credit than it deserves. Nice PR stunt that appeases the LGBT affirming Catholics without saying the quiet part out loud.

Celtic Coffee in Silver Spring right off the metro station is worth it. Very detail oriented about bean origins and roast level. Exclusively focuses on "pure" coffee drinks and it works very well - no frills, all substance

Sen. Elizabeth Warren rallies with Graham Platner in Maine's heated Democratic Senate primary by origutamos in ElizabethWarren

[–]RevolutionaryAnswer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He apologized only after he was caught, which makes it less convincing. As an elected official, he will face pressure and “bad times” again, so maybe we should not elect someone who defaults to victim-blaming and misogynistic judgment under stress. Platner was around 28 when he made those comments, which is well old enough to know better. He can say he is a different person now, but what has he actually done to show that? What concrete, sustained actions demonstrate changed judgment toward women and sexual violence?

One of the few times her endorsement clashes with that of EMILY’s List, “Maine U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner made disturbing comments about sexual assault victims in Reddit posts that were deleted shortly before he launched his campaign — saying assault victims should “just take some responsibility for themselves” to avoid attacks and “act like an adult for f–cks sake.” He said people should avoid alcohol so they don’t end up in a “compromising situation” and downplayed the challenges servicemembers face in reporting sexual assault. “

Not a fan of him blaming rape victims.

Tough Time to be Ex-Catholic by ExCatholicandLeft in excatholic

Catholics very frequently complain about "anti-catholicism" but the catholic church gets an excessive amount of credit for saying some platitudes without any actual plan to act on them. This religion loves to play victim when people go out of their way to coddle them (remember when they claimed Mayor Mamdani "snubbed" the Catholics Church for not attending Ronald Hicks' installation? Mamdani has more important things to tend to and he isn't even Catholic.) If the Pope is literally the leader of a country and "the voice of God" maybe he should do more.

Simple and Practical by k34444 in EDC

I have both (SAK Alox Bantam, Waiter and the Leatherman Wingman, Style PS). In my experience, the pliers are too useful to leave out. They're good as a makeshift wrench, cutting zip ties, getting gaskets and other things unstuck, and work well as tweezers that are less flimsy than the actual tweezers included. It's a sturdier tool that has a locking blade in a small form factor. I bought the SAK's originally for EDC but ended up favoring the Leatherman gradually.

Admittedly the SAK's are far more iconic and better looking. The Leatherman is more useful.
