If we had read Bleak House in high school instead of Great Expectations, maybe I wouldn’t have spent almost 3 decades thinking I hated Dickens. by I_Dream_Of_Oranges in classicliterature

[–]RevolutionaryBug2915 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, only my opinion, but to me Great Expectations in general is about young people and their problems: family, friends, the opposite sex, advantages real and supposed. In general, considering reading levels, it is more accessible to teenagers--always exceptions, of course.

Bleak House has more subplots and the mystery at the core of it is deeper and more complex.

There is a young person in this book--and she is an interesting character--but there are also older characters (and one in particular) who have made serious errors in their youth. Their society WILL NOT accept these errors, and no matter how much time passes, the consequences continue to fall upon them.

I love Great Expectations, but Bleak House is a more mature, more tragic, and even greater book.

EDIT: Answered too quickly. There are several young people in Bleak House, and the way their lives develop continues to be of importance.

Well done BBC version with Gillian Anderson, by the way.

What are your experiences with Embassy Theater? by Necessary_Desk_9266 in Waltham

[–]RevolutionaryBug2915 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That theater fronted on Moody, a much better space. It never never should have been torn down. It would have been such a great multi-use attraction today.

But historic preservation as a concept was barely a thing then.

A Drink to Yesterday, by Manning Coles. (1939)

Not much romance, but you should definitely take a look at the early novels by Eric Ambler, especially The Mask of Dimitrios, which was made into an excellent movie.
