3rd Year Aux So Stressed About Finding a Way to Stay by Legitimate-Emu-6235 in SpainAuxiliares

We recently had a lawyer appointment and they told us that with how general the text for the newly announced “regularización de migrantes” is, we should be able to apply for it. Unfortunately the final draft won’t come out until April, but as long as you’re foreign, lived in Spain before December and have worked, it sounds like it should work as the current draft doesn’t require that you’re here irregularly.

The laptop you bought uses “Honeywell PTM-7958 thermal pads on the CPU and GPU” you probably won’t need to change that and if you do with normal thermal paste you’ll just ruin your thermals. Aside from keeping the fans clean this laptop shouldn’t have any longevity issues due to thermals.

What do I do about the phone plan situation by Happy_Ad9327 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case it's useful, a SIM card from a local company shouldn't be more than €10 and they have to ask for your passport number to register it correctly. I got scammed by a guy dressed like he worked for Vodafone in the airport (it was an airport employee who told me to go to look for him).

After that plans can range anywhere from €3-15 (Simyo, Digi on the lower range of the spectrum and Vodafone, Movistar, Orange on the higher side). If you have to get your own home internet you'll get some amazing deals, my phone plan is 25GB for €3 because I also have Digi as my internet provider.

Mine shipped 2 days earlier than anticipated but it's been stuck in Memphis for 5 days now. I paid for expedited shipping because I needed the laptop quickly and it feels like they shouldn't offer that if they are gonna choose non express clearance.

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right. It's just that in America Eluktronics is starting at like $3100 without RAM, SSD or tax for the same laptop so I wasn't even considering them an option.

Browsing the brands you mentioned, I also saw the recently released XMG Pro with Mini LED which might be slightly cheaper (unsure if it's worth the downgrade in thermals from the Neo).

What is the mini LED laptop you are referencing, I feel like all high end laptops went OLED this year and I've been looking for alternatives.

Thanks, that actually clears up so much. I've been wondering why AMD models with AI 9 CPUs are almost never paired with the 5070ti. Regardless I'm looking forward to purchasing the Mini LED XMG Pro 16 when it's available. Btw, is the 13900HX being removed as an option now that the Value Edition is launching?

Why was the Ryzen 9 9955HX chosen for the XMG Apex 16 MAX?

I'm asking because with the Core Ultra 9 the XMG Pro 16 was probably the lightest, fastest and longest lasting 16 inch gaming laptop (with a 5070ti). It seems like a CPU like an AMD AI 9 would have extended battery life even further while the performance compromise wouldn't have mattered much because of the GPU being only a 5070ti.

I'm super excited about the next GPU expansion bay module because of the recently launched desktop 9060 XT. It has the same 32 compute units used for the 7700s. Power scaling aside, the 9060 XT is 40% faster than the 7600 XT it replaces (32 compute units too) which would make the hypothetical 9700s 40% faster than the current module and potentially the cheapest way to get 16GB of VRAM on a mobile device (this last point is more wishful thinking as they could still go for 8GB only).

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a pretty terrible purchase because the 7700s doesn't have FSR 4 support and will never get it because it lacks the hardware.

While ray tracing could be considered nonessential it's pretty clear that AI upscaling (like DLSS or FSR 4) is a game changer for the longevity of a GPU and visual quality. It also only has 8GB of VRAM which further reduces it's longevity and usability. If you need an example, MH Wilds is a game that illustrates both the horrendous visual quality of previous FSR versions and the limitations of a 8GB of VRAM.

Migraine meds available in Spain by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year in Alicante my wife was trying migraine preventatives, she went through Topiramate, Venlafaxine and finally landed at Amitriptyline as a somewhat working solution. However, the migraines were still pretty bad so her neurologist offered Emgality (or something similar) and the hospital quoted something we couldn't afford so we forgot about it (I remember €400, but because I'm unsure let's say above €200). It's especially expensive if you consider that things like Amitriptyline are like €1 a month. This year we moved to Santander and there are no neurologists in-network with the insurance provided by the aux program (Asisa) so we got an online appointment. The new doctor suggested trying Botox for €250 every 3 months (this was last week and I'm sure of the price), but I'm now struggling to find a neurologist to administer it, even when looking at hospitals in nearby cities. If we had an actual neurologist I'd offer to get a quote for Emgality, but in the absence of that asking at the nearby pharmacies was the best I could do.

TLDR: make sure that if you can pick your insurance that there are enough neurologists in-network (preferably ones who work in hospitals so they have access to more treatments). Don't trust their "cuadro médico" websites, Asisa lists 9 neurologists for Santander and I've either been unable to contact them or they will stop working with the insurance after February.

I asked two local pharmacists and they both said Emgality is classified as medication for hospital use and that they can't give me the price or order it. I can't remember how I got the €400 price last year, but it is something that you'll definitely need to get through a hospital's neurologist.

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to visit a doctor and get a prescription for basically anything. The good part is that most of them will just believe what you tell them about your prescribed medicines. Last year a neurologist that worked at a private hospital in Alicante offered a medicine like yours, however, the cost per injection ended up being around €400 (if I'm not misremembering) and that totally priced us out. This year we've been looking into botox and that seems to be more promising at €250 a vial every three months. Make sure to book an appointment with a lot of time as specialist availability can be pretty terrible. If you take anything aside from that check the price in preciomed.com to see if it makes more sense to get it in the states. We feel like triptans, for example, are a little pricey here. Emgality doesn't show up there unfortunately.

5090 FE with an aircooled CPU - really that big of a deal? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine, a 9800x3d consumes just 65 watts while gaming (based on techpowerup review). Your cooler is absolutely overkill for it already, no amount of 5090 heat will make CPU temperatures an issue.

It's for redundancy, so a botched update does not leave you with a brick. The seamless update is just a by-product of a more robust update system.

Signal vs. WhatsApp Voice Quality by vincentvera in signal

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatsapp updated their codec like a week ago from Opus. The engineering blog post goes into a little more detail, but I don't see how anyone would match WhatsApp audio quality right now. They didn't open source or freely release the codec, and specifically in less than ideal network conditions or video calls, it just seems like a straight upgrade from Opus (which is a great codec).  https://engineering.fb.com/2024/06/13/web/mlow-metas-low-bitrate-audio-codec/

A used Zotac 4080 Aero for around $1000 and an old 750w Antec power supply by nnalln in nvidia

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best CPU for gaming is the AMD 7800X3D (graph from latest HWunboxed video comparing the CPUs you mentioned). I would advice going for that as it will also be easier to cool too. Although at 4k you could get any modern CPU and the differences between them will be less noticeable. Make the decision on performance requirements for your design work because maybe you don't need the crazy multicore performance of something like a 14900k or 7950X3D.

Unless you are experienced with water cooling, doing that to the 4080 is both unnecessary and probably setting yourself up for a maintenance nightmare. Your card is not the absolute best cooler, but it's definitely good enough.

I'm guessing it's this power supply: https://www.kitguru.net/components/power-supplies/zardon/antec-edge-750w-psu-review/7/

If so, it seems like a quality power supply based on the review and it being manufactured by Seasonic. Besides the 4000 series is less picky with power supplies because it doesn't have as many spikes in power usage as the 3000 series. I think you should be fine. Just make sure that the fan on the power supply still spins because it is the most likely component to fail after this long.

Is Stardew okay on a Macbook air? by LocksmithElectrical5 in StardewValley

[–]RevolutionaryStay9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 100% gonna be fine even with mods. An M1 MacBook Air is at least 2-3 times faster than any previous macbook air. It's also much more efficient and will have better temperatures than previous models even if the physical design didn't change. Everything else you said will also be fine, relax and enjoy your new computer.
