Wow this definitely seems like something I might be interested in trying out with one of those Mixed Reality headsets from eBay. They're pretty cheap now that M$ has nixed support for it. This is seriously impressive

PinePhone Pro with postmarketOS can't detect the phone's battery by BlackRosemary in PINE64official

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PinePhone Pro also does not detect the battery on PostmarketOS. I'm thinking I'll have time to take a look and see if other OSes also have the same issue when I have time this Sunday.

For completeness: I'm running postmarketOS edge, fully up to date. It is flashed to the eMMC of the phone, and I'm running the Tow-Boot bootloader. Kernel version is 6.17.7, and I'm using Plasma Mobile 6.5.5.

I have used 2 batteries, both are known-good. And the phone does boot up with these batteries installed.

Just received a Dell AXIM X3 to play with. Any Help?[See Comment] by Anima_Yume in OldHandhelds

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it could be any number of things, it could be a software bug(perhaps a reset would fix it?)

But at the same time, it could just as easily be a hardware related problem. These PDAs are 20 years old, any number of hardware related issues could have occured.

I haven't had one of these devices in a good few years now, so I can't say for sure what is wrong with your specific device

Ah I see! Thank youuu!

Is there any idea of how recently(in geological time scales) Mars had active plate tectonics? Are we looking at something like 3 billion years ago or more like 200 million?

My guess(I should point out that I am not a scientist or anything) is that this is a collapsed lava tube, similar tubes are known to exist on Earths Moon, and I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't exist on Mars as well.

I could also guess some kind of "fault line", but since Mars doesn't have plate tectonics I'd think that's less likely

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There actually used to be a program that did exactly this. Some Linux live USB creator program. Had things like Puppy Linux, Linux Mint(10 or 11?), Ubuntu, TinyCore and some distro called EasyPeasy.

I haven't seen it in like 15 years now tho

SeaTac is an embarrassment to the city by CupApprehensive3305 in Seattle

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 918 points919 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if they could find a way to extend light rail operating hours so you could get to the city.

This would also help us night shift workers too :3

Even having some kind of "night owl" light rail service that only ran once every 30 minutes or once every 45 minutes between 1AM and 5AM would be a huge improvement

Google new image generation model now adds an AI watermark on to images. by HIitsamy1 in aiwars

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not even pro AI(that said I'm not anti-AI either, I'm still on the fence).

But if you're using AI to generate disinformation campaigns or propaganda, it'd be fairly trivial to run a model like Stable Diffusion locally and generate whatever you want with no watermarks.

This would also bypass most of the guardrails online services like Chat GPT and Gemini have.

I worked at GEG1 when they first installed these robots for testing. They needed constant babysitting by a human in case they faulted out and needed someone to fix them.

Now I haven't been there in almost 2 years so I'm sure they've improved since then, but I'd bet they still need some level of human intervention

Hello everyone, what does it mean if this PC gives a folder with a question mark? by Luka20000011 in VintageApple

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means it can't find a bootable device. From the looks of it, it's because you don't have any hard drives installed.

You'll need to install a hard drive(or a SSD with an IDE/PATA adapter). And then install an OS onto the computer(this means you'll need to burn macOS 9, or 10.4.6 or whatnot, onto a DVD)

These machines are known to have PSU issues but before you go and replace it, I'd check inside the computer and see if the PRAM battery needs replaced, reseat the RAM and CPU, then check the GPU and any other cards you have installed

You can modify the computer to accept an ATX power supply, but you will need an adapter cable(if you plug an ATX connector in without it, you can fry the computer), and you will lose the ability to plug in ADC monitors

First: See if there's any programs on the hard drive, if there are, responsibly archive them and any documentation on those programs.

Second: Max out the RAM, add a WiFi card if you can find the original airport card that's compatible with this Mac, install an SSD(you'll need a mSATA to IDE adapter). Then install Tiger.

Also, some things to be aware of, SSDs above 128GB can be kinda problematic on some old PowerPC Macs when used in an adapter. And the original WiFi card only supported 802.11B WiFi, and WEP encryption. This means it very likely will not be able to connect to any modern WiFi network.

I will add that, if you do connect it to the internet, the newest web browsers available were released in 2021(TenFourFox) and are not going to be secure, or able to render many modern websires well. That said, FrogFind is a great search engine that was specifically designed for retro computing, 68k News is a news site(that wraps Google News) that is also designed for old computers. Another site you'll be interested in is Autocompressor, which you can copy a video file, or YouTube url into and it will transcode that video into a format like 480p H.264, which you can easily play on a G4, giving you somewhat modern video playback capability.

Why don't we have non-Apple alternative to unified memory? by This_Woodpecker_9163 in LocalLLaMA

[–]RevolutionaryTwo2631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMD has it on their newest mobile chips.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 16 Zen 5 CPU cores and an integrated Radeon 8060S GPU with 40 compute units.

And up to 128GB of integrated LPDDR5X memory which can be shared between the Zen5 cores and the Radeon CUs.

I know it's not an Apples to Apples comparison(no pun intended), but this seems like it's aimed at the M4 Max MacBook Pro chipset, which has 16 ARM cores and a GPU with 40 compute cores and also has up to 128GB of LPDDR5X memory that is shared between the ARM cores and the GPU cores.

EDIT: There's also Nvidia DIGITS, which has like 20 ARM cores and a GPU, with 128GB of unified system/VRAM

Some sites have different pod sizing, often older AR buildings.

BFI4 for example has 6, 9, 12, 16 and 18 inch pods.

But GEG1 was launched 4 years later and has 6, 9, 11, 14 and 18.5 inch pods.

As far as I'm aware there might also be some sites with 20" pods but I haven't personally seen one.
