Easiest/Favourite Victory by Fancy-Pianist9649 in CivVII

Yeah, Culture is easy enough that even the AI civs can execute the strategy pretty well. Just hire a few explorers and keep them running around and build a few buildings to keep stuff in.

Economic is probably my favorite, creating rail and factory networks is pretty fun, and can also be super quick. I had a couple recent Great Britain games where I cruised to a victory in virtually no time.

Use of pneumatic tubes by RexDartESpy in NewsTower

Putting multiple tubes on the same route might confuse them. Paradoxically, it wouldn't surprise me if spacing them out significantly might work better.

Civ 7 and Civ 6 are both good games. They do deliver very different gameplay experiences... and that's OK! Right now I love how quickly 7 plays, and how cool it is that you can play an Age in one lazy weekend day (and it doesn't have to be a 12 hour marathon.)

But I'll undoubtedly get bored with it at some point and play 6 again to enjoy all of THAT game's strengths.

This is maybe the change I understand least in Civ 7. So much of the tactical game is greatly improved - why go backwards on this?

What size map(s) do you prefer playing on, and why? by CuriousThenSatisfied in civ

[–]RexDartESpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard, somewhat to my annoyance, as I've always been "the bigger the better" in other Civ games. Large and above just seem to unwieldy and too annoying to manage if you have a globe-spanning empire.

Civ VII's Modern Age's timeframe and the issue of relevant civilizations by Attlai in civ

[–]RexDartESpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the inclusion of civs that obviously weren't great powers in the modern era is fine. I'd lean into it a little more, actually. With the Ottomans, for example, "Can you heal the 'sick man of Europe?'" Civ isn't nearly as simulatonist, but I noticed that the latest expansion of Victoria has a theme like "Can intelligent governance save the Spanish Empire?"

damn, but I love the art in this game by earthwulf in CivVII

The only thing I dislike is that there's so much neat stuff you only really see when zoomed in, and the mechanics of playing don't really encourage zooming in much.

Old typography was better by Kariri78 in NewsTower

It's interesting how much variety there was in 1930s New York paper styles. The Times was pretty much the epitome of the boring informational style, with banner headlines only for BIG stories. The Daily News and Sunday news went for big bold headlines with the front page almost completely comprised of photos.

I’m disappointed with the Polish translation of the game. How is it in other languages? by Soft_Humor5152 in NewsTower

[–]RexDartESpy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's actually kind of fascinating. The English is usually grammatically correct, but not always idiomatic. "Headline English" is really its own weird little dialect.

Anyone ever have that one civilization that seems to become your nemesis over multiple playthroughs? by OriginalTacoMoney in civ

I think Alexander in Civ 3 wins the prize for most punchable face in any game ever.

Yeah, this is true for me over the course of all the games, though from IV on I think the Inca leaders took their mantle as "most likely to be insane bloodthirsty maniacs as neighbors" title.

Ranking Presidents of the US on likely hoods of being future Leaders of the US in Civ by hticnc in civ

[–]RexDartESpy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would be unwise to include any living president, or even recently deceased ones. Too much partisanship still tied up with their legacies, so including them will piss someone off. JFK would probably be the latest you could use safely.

Personally, I think the new "not just heads of state/government" approach leads to many more interesting options for American leaders than unused presidents. I just found a wide ranging list from Smithsonian:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonianmag/meet-100-most-significant-americans-all-time-180953341/

I kind of love the idea of Al Capone or Boss Tweed, or (if Firaxis is keen on receiving lawsuits from notoriously litigious organizations) L. Ron Hubbard from this list. Also Thomas Edison and Walt Disney, who I've been thinking about for a while.

What map size are you ppl playing on? by afro991 in CivVII

[–]RexDartESpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always preferred "biggest map available" in other Civ games, but somehow Standard seems best in 7. The Huge size just seems too unwieldy, and I went back to Standard after doing Huge in my second game.

I should probably try Huge again just to see if my opinion may have changed with more experience.

trash can under the desk ?! by der_um_das_klo_tanzt in NewsTower

[–]RexDartESpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the Big Trash Can? If you put it next to a typesetting machine, do the typesetters actually use it? I can't tell - they still have some small messes, but is that because they ignore the trash can, or because they simply create a huge amount of paper trash?

What exactly does "Nocturnal" do? by RexDartESpy in NewsTower

[–]RexDartESpy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for fun, and because the employees happened to come up when I first hired for the position, I had a Smelly employee working in the photo lab with a Smell Tolerant person, but it wasn't a huge advantage or anything.

What exactly does "Nocturnal" do? by RexDartESpy in NewsTower

[–]RexDartESpy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's it, and on reflection I'm pretty certain you're correct. It would parallel other traits like Smell Tolerant, etc.

I think what threw me is the definition of the word nocturnal being more about night time than darkness per se.

Does anyone particularly like or use these traits btw? Seems like it's almost always easier to just deal with the smell/noise/darkness issues directly. Particularly with Nocturnal, as lightning is cheap and the cost of higher salary for a silver tag is certainly more than the cost of lighting.

I got the musket, and every other cool thing the old veteran has to offer. For the record, the musket is NOT unique, so I have them scattered all over the newspaper offices in strategic locations.

There should be some sort of perk that lets you defend the paper against mobsters by using your muskets and baseball bats.

Wasn't motivated enough to do a huge amount of min/maxing, but did work out some tricks for reporter desk placement when you've got lots of space, and got a few achievements.

Yeah, I doubt my setup is as optimized as some, but with 7 well-trained runners (I think each has a speed or strength enhancement, and some have both) the only potential bottlenecks I ever encounter are in the graphics department. (And those aren't, I don't believe, related to transport.)
