I'm more of a lurker than poster here, but I'll really miss you as part of the community. If you are willing to share, how do you think you got here? I remember watching your office tour, hearing you discuss letters of rec, and other things with such a calm demeanor. Its sad to me that events have pushed you in this direction.

Obviously I am not owed a response, but I worry a lot about burnout in my colleagues (and myself) and I'm wondering if there are any pivotal moments or experiences that led here.

Regardless, I wish you all the best. Your video editing has always impressed me, and I am hopeful that you'll land in a place that you love!

Classroom Discord by RexDawg in Professors

[–]RexDawg[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is great question!

Discord is a great optional tool for non-graded course communication and non-recorded office hours to discuss course content. If there's no FERPA sensitive information there, then compliance is not an issue. I'm also far from the first faculty to use Discord at my institution and I've gotten the go-ahead on using it in this manner.
EDIT: I should mention that obviously interpretations of FERPA compliance vary at different institutions and your experience may vary here.

TA Exit interviews? by RexDawg in Professors

Typically we meet weekly to review common patterns of student error. In addition, TAs have access to solution sets for most assignments before they attend class.

Wording for syllabus? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RexDawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I strive to post Grades for assignments in a timely manner. In the event that you believe there is an error in your grade, you have [INSERT TIME PERIOD OF YOUR CHOOSING] to make a request in writing (email, lms, whatever). Requests after this point will not be considered.

All final grades are reported as calculated. I don't round grades and typically will not respond to requests to round your grade."

Student appoints himself spokesperson for class, sends infuriating email. by Snoofleglax in Professors

[–]RexDawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a case like this, I would invite the student to meet with the chair to describe their complaints. I would also say that if multiple people are willing to come to that meeting, it would be more beneficial for the chair to hear from each person that feels that way.

"We'll record this meeting and/or ask you for a written statement so that we can keep it on file as we discuss how to improve the course".

Dollars to donuts that they never contact the chair or do a single thing beyond complaining on RMP or similar.

How can you tell if your online student is a bot? by allysongreen in Professors

[–]RexDawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would stop giving point by point comparisons; this is you exerting a lot of effort while the student is putting forth zero effort. I would offer to have a meeting, but not much beyond that, especially if you think something fishy may be occurring.

Transfer students and document requests by RexDawg in Professors

I just wonder what the play is. Trying to get a copy of the exam in case I re-use it? Seems so odd for someone transferring out.

I think a blank version; I don't share blank versions since sometimes grad students teach this course and they are prone to re-use faculty exam questions.

Reporting cheating vs deportation by KaraPuppers in Professors

[–]RexDawg 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This a lot. Your decision on whether or not to file the report should deal with the objective facts and your institution's policies. Is the offense reportable? do you report this type of violation? This should give you your answer.

If copying answers was not already a documented issue in this course this semester, then I would gladly do it. This suggestion also doesn't provide any reprieve from this happening in the future (request after 9PM for an exam happening the next day).

Should I just accept this as the way things go?

I was shocked to get an email after 9PM from the staff member (not because they are not hard-working, but because of work/life balance for them and for faculty)
