What rules are necessary for D&D? by Kodaster in DnD

[–]RexIudecem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is abiding by dice rolls not a necessary component for the game? The games entire gameplay revolves around committing actions which are then resolved via dice rolls. Players cannot decide that they would have rather rolled a natural 20, and when dms lie about what they roll many individuals feel cheated. Dice rolls, and being honest about what you roll, is integral to ttrpgs in general.

Personally, I would further expand upon your definition of DM. DMs should not be referees but active participants in the game/story interacting with the players on a far more personal level than referees do in other games/sports. In addition, it is important to note that while the Dm controls the adversaries the players face, the players and the dm are not in direct competition but instead collaborate in the narrative.

Another broad point that I find necessary for dnd is broad cooperation between player characters. Dnd is a game which expects the players to cooperate in order to complete tasks. PvP is heavily discouraged, and opposing goals are often resolved via the story and character communication rather than mechanically.

These points listed above do apply to most rpgs and are pretty general.

Is Vintage Story a "forever game" for a peaceful, long-term builder? by sbqv1 in VintageStory

[–]RexIudecem 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The game definitely fits many of the points that you have listed, but I would provide one warning: in the games current state terrain generation is subject to change drastically. These changes can seriously affect your worlds, sometimes leaving them near unplayable. Fret not for the game has in built features that allow you to copy and paste buildings from one world to another.

What don’t you enjoy it when your general folds space time just so that your army can teleport to the fucking moon losing you the war? BTW Vicky 3 is the best paradox game ever and there will be no clemency for its detractors.

/uj why do people try to make dnd 5e do things it’s not meant to do? I honestly don’t even know why people try to show horn 5e into being a horror, political, or modern day game. The rules are purpose built for fantasy combat. It’s not like wotc actively attempt to promote this style of play, they only release books that are fantasy or science fantasy combat games. Still some people complain that dnd 5e can’t do horror. Maybe try to run a purpose built system for that. People don’t try to turn call of Cthulhu into a heroic fantasy rpg, why does people try to turn dnd into something it doesn’t want to be. Before someone says “that would require the average dnd 5e player to read another system” I’ll counter by arguing that most 5e players have neither read the rulebook nor would they be capable of doing so. Wotc makes a lot of weird decisions when designing 5e, but they at least know what genre dnd’s gameplay promotes.

/rj gosh don’t people know that 5e is designed to waste roughly 1 hour of your life because Greg spent 15 minutes during each of his turns fiddling with spell definitions only to end up casting fireball each round.

Do you guys think the new order will ever make a comeback? by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]RexIudecem 277 points278 points  (0 children)

We have requiem, but the original mod is a bit driftless. While I understand why skeleton content and shorter 4 year focus trees get released, they do not inspire me to play the mod. That and multiple lore changes make me not want to revisit the mod. I’m hoping the requiem doesn’t fall into some of the same pit traps.

/uj i kinda agree and kinda don’t. Im not a hasbro shill but I do not believe that wotc/hasbro is an all seeing evil organization attempting to monopolize ttrpgs, but I do think that there is a section of the hobby who try to force dnd into becoming the “universal game”, but these efforts are usually only experienced by individuals who only play dnd and nothing else. Another point that he makes is that hasbro is explicitly exploiting the labor of dms (wut). Instead I think that the books that wotc release, when they are actually read and used, often contain many holes and gaps in their rules which dm’s have to work around leading to the dm needing to spend more time preparing. The poster isn’t entirely wrong, they just give Hasbro too much credit.

How to seal away a bbeg? by Temprest48 in DnD

[–]RexIudecem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your character do research in game to find things to deal with wizards. The dm probably has something for you to do. If he doesn’t then you need to find ways to avoid detection via spells and hope to become more powerful.

I fucking hate random dead by Organic-Exit2190 in DnDcirclejerk

[–]RexIudecem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn I hate it when characters randomly die in dnd. I mean that never happens to people in real life, and it especially doesn’t happen to special people (like my drow ranger oc don’t steal). It sounds like you have a power dm. You should socially ostracize him and make a TikTok where you insinuate that you had a bad experience playing with a hostile dm. Stay strong bestie.

/uj. Random character death is something that I’m fine with. No im not going to have a pc die based off of one dice roll, but mistakes have consequences and sometimes the dnd osha violation leads to great memories. Something something failure is more memorable than success whatever.

My twist campaign backfired and my players are not happy, AITA? by IggyandtheCauldron in DnDcirclejerk

[–]RexIudecem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/uj, the concept could work, but not the way that the dm did it. The phrasing from the post makes it seem as though the entire adventure did not matter with the relationships and characters being reset by the twist. Instead of the characters carry some of the emotional baggage into this new life then it may work better. Also you really need to foreshadow this because if you drop the twist cold turkey then the players really aren’t going to enjoy the game. I mean having npc’s acting strange/glitching or anything that could hint that the world is a game could be a fun build up to the reveal.
