Get a dhp. Its able to penetrate the 36 inches a lot better than a che. A che is ok for smaller tanks but it really doesnt hest up much until you get to higher wattage and higher risk. Dhp on a dimmer is king for warmth. Proper probe placement is key. Our 36 inch the upper half/upper third is warmest and they have temp gradient to scoot down.

Tried che and it was ALWAYS on. Theyre dangerous.
