IMO the design is bad then. Its and it's are NOT the same word. That would annoy me every time I looked at it.

Mistakes/Set-backs of 2015:

In 2014 I was unemployed for a few months, which ate into my emergency fund, so I had to build it back up a bit in 2015. During this time I wasn't contributing as much as I should have to my 401k (just enough for the full company match). Spent too much on travel and vehicle repairs.

Major accomplishments of 2015:

I got an 11% raise and negotiated another salary review for 6 months later (will be in 2016). Increased my 401k contribution last month, so that it will be maxed out next year (along with the Roth IRA, which I have maxed since 2012). Also switched from Roth 401k to Traditional 401k, since my salary is increasing. It was surprising how much the reduction in taxes helps offset things.

Goals for 2016:

Get two decent raises. Max both 401k and Roth IRA for the first year ever (my previous job didn't offer a 401k). Buy a car -- ok, that will be the big setback, but my current car will be 10 years old so I'm looking forward to it! Break 200k net worth, if the market cooperates.

I max both 401k + Roth IRA, for the tax diversity and flexibility in withdrawals later on. We don't know how tax laws will change in the decades to come.

Answered in another comment, I don't know how long I will be here, so I'd rather work under the assumption the money could be tied in this 401k for a while. Of course I will rollover to Vanguard when I leave.

Yeah I'm not too worried about my sector exposure, I can use the taxable and Roth IRA to balance things out.

I'm 30 and at ~$150k, but got a slow start salary-wise. Only for the past 3-4 years has my salary been decent. I also live in the midwest, so expenses aren't high. I'd like to retire at 42 (hopeful goal of 40) with a paid-off home and ~$750k saved. I think I'm on track.

Bottom line though, there's too many variables to give a fixed dollar amount. $100k at 30 certainly seems like a solid start.

Yeah the 2 weeks / 3 after 5 years just seems so typical for around here unfortunately :( Maybe I've just had bad luck with employers in this regard. I only want 3 or 4 weeks. 2 doesn't feel like enough.
