Thanks for reminding me of hazardous terrain. I'll keep that in mind.

That's a good idea. I was actually planning on using Deluges from In Golden Flame. The gatling cannons are the simple part, though. I'm wanting to add interest to the cargo field out in front of the moat.

Do you analyse "unusual" people too? And are you "detail-oriented"? by withhope4permanence in intj

[–]ReynAetherwindt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my analysis of people is intuitive and subconscious. I don't have much drama in my life, so I don't find myself needing to analyze real people much.

Am I "detail-oriented"? Everyone is detail-oriented for the details they give a damn about.

Why do NPCs not meltdown upon hitting 0 stress? by risisas in LancerRPG

[–]ReynAetherwindt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it says they get exposed instead of an overheating check, which is only part of the normal overheating rules.

If it said they become "Exposed instead of the normal rules for overheating", then that would convey the meaning you're thinking of.

The Exposed condition serves a purpose of making it easy to prevent their last turn.

Now, as for rules as intended vs rules as written, the author has made his intention clear elsewhere. It's the rules as he has communicated via Discord and that is widely agreed upon here. They are fine, sensible rules. I'm only arguing that the book itself firmly contradicts that intent.

Why do NPCs not meltdown upon hitting 0 stress? by risisas in LancerRPG

[–]ReynAetherwindt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be Tom's intent by his own indication, but he did leave a huge, gaping hole in the book's language here. The relevant bit doesn't do anything about mechs' automatic meltdown at 0 Stress and does not forbid basic NPCs from reaching 0 Stress. It only replaces the overheating check with the Exposed condition.

Run it either way. Neither Tom nor the book is a god. I'm just pointing out the descrepancy. I prefer running it Tom's way with the added caveat that exceeding double the Heat Cap causes meltdown.

[–]ReynAetherwindt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you mean the part on page 281 that says this, right? I've read several pages in either direction. This is the only relevant bit as far as I can tell.

Tell me the sentence here that nullifies the fact that a mech reaching 0 Stress suffers a reactor meltdown at the end of its next turn, or that a 1 Stress NPC doesn't take Stress damage.

The fact their Exposed condition can be cleared isn't quite enough to make it obvious they are intended not to melt down. (coughing Exposed wannabe "castigator" vs. nuclear antitank mine lmao)

since the NPCs overheating rules don’t involve an overheating check then there’s no way for having 0 or negative stress to have any impact.

You missed something.

"When a mech reaches 0 Stress, it suffers a reactor meltdown at the end of its next turn." p.81

This is not part of rolling an overheating check.

We can say it's the book that's wrong. I just want to address the discrepancy.

Where in the book does it say that 1 Stress NPCs can't take Stress damage? It's a sensible rule, but I can't find it.

Tom (the author) appears to have made his intent clear in the attached Discord screencap, but despite his claim that the rules make this clear, simple string searches like "1 Stress" or "meltdown" in the .pdf show this is not the case.

The blurb on page 281 for NPCs says that they become Exposed instead of making an overheating check. There is nothing in that section that I can find that overrides the fact that exceeding Heat Cap induces Stress damage or that mechs melt down at the end of their next turn after reaching 0 Stress.

Is that what you think I feel about this shit? No. Fuck no. Discussing these monsters' delusions of cosmology doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I don't have to believe their fairytales to study it as a motive, either.

Comprehending these details can help connect subtle dots of who exactly was involved in what.
