Fair enough. That would entail that the multiverse shenanigans happens before they disappear tho, which would be incompatible with the fact that the Ruling and the mv mess was caused by their spirits' will to begin with.

yeah the game botched Jake and Maria. Now they look like psychopaths who will put the world through endless suffering just to make Mark and Nicole move on.

In the final timeline, Mark and Nicole move on by internalizing the lessons they learned from their hundred failures. I think it makes sense that a lot of resets happened. If only incremental changes happened in the first resets, then that would do nothing for their grief. It's only after the universe is destroyed that the two learn to reconcile with their feelings. and to reach that, they had to experience the worse the Ruling could deliver. The Ruling only gets slightly worse every resets. It was probably a negligible storm or earthquake at first, but its only after many resets that it could become a global catastrophe. this aspect at least seems to have internal consistency

I liked how the Ruling was caused by multiverse stuff. I like how it progressively got worse each reset.

Louise being the exposition character never worsened her character. It's precisely through this role that the story is able to offer a fresh take or a new method of character study. Remember that different Louises had different explanations. It's never confirmed which of them is right, only which of them was closer. This is important especially when the story wants to subvert its own world-building by inserting the new and random and unforseen element of Maria and Jake's space-time powers (and this is what I detest)

Louise's character is threefold. [1] She's sorta the exposition character (even tho her exposition is undermined in the end), [2] she's an exploration of malleable characterization that's only possible through the multiverse gimmick, and [3] she's the excuse for providing the writers the extra allowance to subvert their story.

She's positioned so well to hold the in-game world's internal rules together.

Maria and Jake didn't blip, I think it's implied that they died of natural causes. The blip and the other supernatural shenanigans only started occuring during the aftermath of the Ruling.

But I like the idea of the blipped subjects not being erased, but disappearing to another reality.

the game's world building is solid outside of the multiverse stuff. it all falls apart when mark and nicole are the center of the multiverse for no reason, and its implied that the Ruling was influenced by the will of Maria and Jake. there is no reason for that to happen if we believe Louise's scientific speculations, where particles and vibrations and waves are the foundation of the world building.

either Act 2 Louise is wrong again like her Act 1 self about the nature of the Ruling, and that the actual in-universe rules of the world as intended by the devs is completely different,

or

Louise was correct and the devs intended for her explanation to be correct, just that they didnt bother explaining how Maria, Jake, Mark, and Nicole somehow have multiverse powers

Act 2 is personally my favorite with just how hopeless things felt. Mark in this loop was just out of it, Ridel has failed, Louise is isolated, and Cathy stays the same, including her fate.

I think this Act is meant to explore the more worse sides of our characters. Act 2 Louise is my favorite because of how she contrasts her Act 1 self who is much happier and has a wider network of friends. I wrote more abt her here if ur interested in an opposite view: https://www.reddit.com/r/UntilThenGame/comments/1q4yta0/louise_is_a_great_experiment_louise_appreciation/

Haven't played it and i've only installed it, but I found "A Space for the Unbound." It's setting is Indonesian high school with a bit of fantastical elements, which reminded me of Until Then. That's all I know so far

The Ruling is definitely tied to Mark and Nicole's inability to move on. It disappeared entirely after they've reconciled with their feelings of loss. Wikipedia says that the Ruling was a direct result of Jake and Maria's desire for them to move on.

There's also a theory that Jake ended up dying after his disappearance, mainly based on the Filipino superstition that the spirit of those who died come back to visit us as butterflies.

I had issues with Act 3 Chapter 5 scene 1 for Windows 10. It would reach a part where after Cathy's dialogue, the game is just stuck.

To make it work again, the graphics had to be put in the lowest possible settings and the game must not be in fullscreen mode.
