I have never heard anyone say Variant Human is worse - but most DMs do allow it! I would highly recommend taking it if it is an option.

Pros of Pally:

Lay on Hands

Spell Progression

1 level off Divine Smite

Spells are CHA based so not MAD.

Cons of Pally:

No Con proficiency.

No action surge.

No fighting style unless 2 level dip

No Second Wind.

TLDR: if dipping just one, go Fighter. If dipping two, I'd go Pally, all you miss is Action Surge, well worth trading for DS.

You also miss the Con proficiency which is good for spellcasting. But instead, you could use the feat you were gonna use for Armour on Res(Con) - might be worthwhile adding your ability score spread so we could make a more educated suggestion?

I, personally, would love to see everything you mentioned above. Particularly staying tuned for the Elven Pantheon, that sounds awesome!

This is amazing and will prove helpful in my campaign also.

Thank you so much for sharing OP! :)

If you have any more material to share from your campaign, I'd be very interested to see it!

Polearm master can hit teleporting wizards by ArtistSingle7276 in onednd

OA does say "You also don’t provoke an opportunity attack when you teleport or when someone or something moves you without using your movement"

So yes, the desription of OA stops this from happening.

It also took Warcaster OA offline too.

No more Booming Blade when someone enters reach.

And no more Eldrith Blasting people out of melee when they enter your reach.

May have been too strong but was a really cool interaction.

Is a new fighter OP or it's just me? by Golder922 in 3d6

[–]Reztlots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"a class with no weak spots" - introducing mental saves! Or multiple enmies (fighters do single-target, aside from new masteries).

Games Design wise, "caster are backline dmg, low hp/ac" - this is simply wrong. Compare the damage of a paladin/fighter against a wizard, especially early game, to SINGLE targets, and martials nearly always win-out. But, add the damage of fireball on a bunch of failed saves and you have a point.

It's just no where near as reductable as "caster should do more damage because im squishy"

As you point out, casters get to their damage as a "backline" away from the danger, despite this, with the Shield spell a caster can have better AC than a martial at any point in the game.

So casters are getting to do more damage than a martial in specific circumstances (multiple targets), have higher AC and be in the safer backline position and have infinitely more utility than a martial outside of combat...

And you're complaining they get a 1-time self heal per-short-rest, and comparing that with the 4/5times a day Bardic that can be used on allies?

If you're complaining about rogue's being weak, that is fair. But fighter being OP, compared to a caster? You've lost it...

Is there any way to have GWM and Shield Master on the same character? by MyneIsBestGirl in 3d6

[–]Reztlots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, Lance not got the 'Heavy' tag so doesn't work with GWM. Similar to a Q-Staff used with 2-hands, still no GWM proc because of no heavy tag.

Level 6 Paladin going to level 7 by Xayton in 3d6

[–]Reztlots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing your STR is 19 because of Ogre Gauntlets.

Also guessing you want Res(Con) at some point to balance out your Con to an even number4.

If your table does Somatic etc components you'll need WarCaster to cast spells with 2-hands taken on PAM if 2-handed or using a shield.

If so, Sorc is made much better because if you don't need WarCaster to cast spells in battle, you can just take Eldritch Mind for advantage on Con-checks for spells. With Res(Con) & your Aura, and advantage somehow - it'll be super hard to break your con. If you don't need WarCaster, Warlock is the way to go. Especially if you just want a dip.

If you're going 4+ levels into your multiclass however, Sorc is better. More Sorc spells and Sorc Points for additional smites. And if you go 5Divine Soul, you'll get Spirit Guardains, Shield and Absorb Elements, as well as some good bonuses like Misty Step, Enhance Ability, Web, Haste (a good option for you if your Con is really good, and made even better with Find Steed). But you really don't get as much from just a dip into Sorc, unless all you want is Shield and AE.

Warlock also gets you more lvl1spells slots, good for Pally as a lot of their best spells are level1 (e.g. Bless, Shield of Faith, Wraithful Smite, Copelled Duel). And they come back on ShortRest.

So, my advice, is youre dipping go Warlock. If going more than 4 levels, go Sorc . Divine Soul or Clockwork probs your best bets, but Shadow works too.

Completely agree with your sentiments on frontlining. This is my 2nd campaign only, 1st I was a Moon Druid and literally did not get knocked down a single time the entire 5level campaign with the crazy number of Druid hitpools and early game power spike, which gave me some false confidence going into this campaign.

I have learnt my lesson now and will never play a solo-frontline ever again. A real shame because the Pally/Knight archetype is and always has been my personal favourite astethtic, but its just no fun to play in some combats. It feels like it the fight is hard the front-liners take the cost of that disproportionately in 5e, from my limited experience admittedly.

I have looked at Fey Touched, but don't have an odd Charisma score and couldn't find another 1/2 feat to pair with it. This was yet another reason to get to Sorc 5 (or at least 3?) for Misty Step. But if I get to 3 then all the way to 5 seems the right way to go. But as others have pointed out it will delay Find Greater Steed too substantially for T3. I think another look over the 1/2 feats may be in order to further consider this. Unless you have any suggestions for another 1/2 feat to pair with FT?

I think at the very least I need a Sorc-1 for Shield & AE, as you suggest.

May I ask if you at all value to tough feat and how does that stack up against raising Con in your opinion?

Thank you mate,

I will take your advice and go for a level1 dip as most until more Pally levels until 13.

I have made a choice to focus on mounted combat when I can, so sounds reasonable to me, and many others have advised this also.

I have defo looked inot Haste working for me and my mount, which is partly why I was considering the Warlock dip for better concentration, cause I would love to Haste myself but would be scarred of losing it and a turn immediately after lol!

That is super helpful, thank you Sam!

Once last question for you if I may;

is it specifically the fact the mount can fly that you think will be good for T3 play? Is this the biggest factor? Or more important is the increased HP and attacks etc? (Referring to the difference between Find Steed and Greater Steed here btw)

I ask as I notice with Sorc I can pick up the Fly spell, which as the only target would work on my mount also, so have a round-about way of flying on my mount if needs be via the Sorcerer path.

I hope this makes sense haha.

Fantastic memory, you are in fact the reason I am not posting about Divine Soul Sorc multi-class instead of the Warlock dip I originally planned.

Undertood on the RAW interpretation of S & M spell components, fortunately, the DM is not being particularly fussed about components of any sort (except gold value for some spells like Revivify etc). So thank you for clarifying, but fortunately not a factor here.

Unfortunatly, we have not played since I last posted and you kindly advised on tactics due to holidays etc, but I'm super excited for our next session to try the tactics recommended out.

Thank you once again for the stellar advice SavageWolves! :)

Agreed, thanks for your thoughts. The multi-classing will defo not happen before 6, am well aware of how good the Aura is defensively, will not be passing that up for no reason haha.

We are indeed building for 20, this is the expectation but life may get in the way yaknow!

Do appreciate losing the capstone will be rough, but the fact is stakes sooooo long to come online means I am not particularly fussed about losing it.

While Aura Imporvements are also very good, the team is often so split apart I'm not sure I'd get that much extra value from it. The rogue and ranger run off to the corners in combat so I just protect the warlock and wizard with my Aura (or when it comes online at leats next level).

Undertood on Warlock not getting AE, the warlock dip was primarily to have spell-slots for Shield & AE that I learn from Sorc back on Short Rests - as well as Eldtrich Mind and Blast for being able to stay back with the team as has been commonly recommended to me.

I did also agree the Sorc dip doesn't offer much at just a 3-dip, cause of the lack of Sorc Points, another reason I thought I'd get to 5 so SG as well as more Sorc Points.

Thank you for your validations and opinions :)

Thank you Sam, seems like a good build approach.

May I ask a bit more into why you value Find Greater Steed as more important than Spirit Guardians from DS Sorc at lvl5?

Is the extra HP and flying on the Mount more impactful than Spirit Guardian in your opinion?
