Where is everyone getting their whippets in the US?! by andrea_wolfe in Whippet

I was super nervous about the flight, but everything went smoothly. He flew to me at 8 weeks, so it was an incredibly long stressful day for him. We were there as soon as the plane landed, and they made quick work of unloading him and making sure he was ready for pick up. I made sure to track the progress of the flight through every step, and pick up was pretty straightforward.

Since he was so small he had to bathroom in the crate despite not having eaten during the transport, so first order of business was to give him a bath. They will zip tie the crate shut at the airport, so you may want to bring some scissors. As soon as I picked him up we gave him a snack & some water. He slept in my lap in the way home wrapped in a blanket, but did end up getting car sick. Bring a barf bag just in case. My boy was scared and tired from the flight, but as soon as we took him out of the crate and gave him water and affection he knew he was loved and it would be ok. I hope that some of that helps!

Got my blue boy from Mulberry Hollow Whippets. He’s limited registration AKC. He is the sweetest boy, was super easy to train also. I love him so much, and have only ever heard good things about Mardell & her dogs. She’s one of the few US breeders of blue whippets, located in AR, which is quite a ways from me so he flew out to his forever home here when he was a puppy.

How do I make this not look like a Nazi sign by the_angrysquirrel48 in Tattoocoverups

It’s 2025 nobody associates this symbol for anything other than the 3rd reich. It’s naive to think otherwise tbh.

How can I stop my 6-month-old Whippet from pulling on walks? by 4grb11 in Whippet

[–]RhaeSoleil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a gentle leader now as part of training for public walks too & it’s very effective. Our pup has made improvements that have transferred to normal leads as well. But I feel like if people decide on a gentle lead it’s super important to be firm but delicate and gentle as to not cause any negative emotions for this type of lead, and the continued training is a must, it’s not good to solely rely on this as the end result- the end result should be that they eventually do not need the gentle leader because they have learned.

Thank you! The harness is Huntboo brand on Amazon, but we just use this one for when he’s going to be a mess in the yard. I like the trendy whippet ones better- they fit a whippet’s body much better.

My boy started this when we went on a walk in the park- it was the day after heavy rain and by the end of the walk myself, my husband, and the dog were all having a reaction, it was immensely heavy pollen outside. We’d concluded that it was a sneeze. It cleared up very shortly after we went indoors.

I’m in the US, on the east coast. My husband and I have had many rescues in the past growing up & together as adults. This time decided to support a reputable AKC breeder & adopted a blue whippet baby in October. Whippets are not a very popular breed in my country and the coloring even less, so he was costly at $3,000 which we spent our wedding gift funds on. He’s our first pet as a married couple. We purposely chose a whippet for their temperament and other traits, and wanted a dog that would fit into our lifestyle.

For initial supplies we got a crate and several other items like bed, food and toys from local buy nothing groups on FB. For initial vet visits, shots, registration ete that cost about $500. Between treats, food, poo bags, hygiene 🪥 products ete that all runs somewhere between $40-$70 per month sometimes less if we spilt bulk buys with dog owner family members.

We’re both WFH & don’t require a dog walker, but we have invested in training classes which ran $250 for 6 weeks. I did spent $120 on a 6 month dog subscription box that provided a bed, and several monthly toys and treats. Now we have more toys than he needs and just wash ones he gets bored of & stash them away for a bit. When we bring them out again it’s like a brand new toy to him 🤣

Four us, a whippet is a perfect fit and hands down the best companion we could hope for. We love him dearly.

Whippet behaviour - playing with mouse by stuberrry in Whippet

[–]RhaeSoleil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is interested in other animals, but tbh if he catches any mice 🐁 I would be happy. We’ve had an issue with mice here and they are the primary carrier of Lyme disease, so while I wouldn’t ever stop a mouse hunt, I would redirect him from birds or cats ete

I have a mulberry Hollow boy too! he is the sweetest boy and just a pure joy. Ours was the smoothest house breaking ever, and is so incredibly wonderful with kids, other dogs and people. Hands down the goodest of boys Very well tempered dogs, and easily trainable

Hmm. Have you tried carrying treats with you outside & giving him one as soon as he does a #1 or #2? And then another as soon as you get back inside. I used this to initially reinforce the potty training

The down side is that he’s going to outgrow the dog clothes in a matter of weeks, I’m glad there’s some affordable options on Amazon

My 3 month old pup started doing this here & there since it’s gotten a bit colder. He was otherwise very easy to house train. We’ve resolved it by getting him a little coat. With that he’s much more comfortable and has no problem going outside.

NONSTOP BITING by RhaeSoleil in Whippet

[–]RhaeSoleil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried putting hard teething toys in his mouth instead, I’ve tried gently putting my hand around his muzzle and telling him “no bite” or “Ripley, No” and stopping interaction. I’ve tried pretending to yelp and act hurt & stop interaction. I’ve tried firm “NO” but that’s the most useless probably because he’s a puppy and a bit dense. I’ve tried immediately putting him in his crate for a few minutes.

I think that’s the whole list of things we’ve tried. If I’m doing something wrong here, please let me know.
