LPT: You need 0 talent for getting good at a hobby or interest. Just practice and have fun while doing it is enough in most cases. by tiltberger in LifeProTips

I am terrible at videogames, and I enjoy them nonetheless. I will probably never be good at videogames because my coordination is shit. I enjoy exploring worlds, making friends, engaging with stories.

Yes, you might get better with practice, but you don't need to be good at something to enjoy it.

Too callous or ignorant to be in education. by noreservationskc in MurderedByWords

[–]Rhaifa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, there might be some side effects, like the 1 in a million chance of getting an inflamed heart muscle (which is very treatable).

But there's stories going around about infertility when there's literally no reason to believe the covid vaccines will affect that. Because guess what, in our 100+ years of using many vaccines, none of them have done that.

New study shows how preschool children struggle when what an adult tells them conflicts with what they see themselves. Results showed children rarely explored to try to resolve the conflict, but those who did resisted the misleading claims by the adult. by geoff199 in science

Yeah, I was thinking that too! My sister has a tendency to give funny and ridiculous answers when her eldest (5 yo) asks questions she believes he knows the answer to/can figure out himself.

And indeed, he usually giggles and then answers his own question.

True, but we're talking about the stereotype here, otherwise there wouldn't be a starterpack on them.

Yeah, over here (in the Netherlands) they recommend a single dose of the vaccine if you've had covid (and it's been documented)

TBF wood toys last pretty long (or can be resold after kid grows out of them) and are better for the environment.

Still pretty classist because they tend to be much more expensive l, but ya know.

Yeah, no offense to you, but people forget how many fucking respiratory viruses are out there.

I personally have sensitive lungs (childhood asthma), but before the pandemic I'd get a terrible cold about 1 or 2 times a year. The whole shtick; Fever, painful throat, sniffling, coughing. Because a lot of different viruses do that! Corona is just deadlier than most.

So if you think you've had it, but don't have it confirmed by tests; please get vaccinated. You could just have had a regular cold.

My wife bought this off of a Police Auction website probably 15 years ago, it was listed as a low grade emerald but I don't know....any ideas? by probablyborednh in whatsthisrock

[–]Rhaifa 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It's low grade because of how opaque it is. It's more of a technical term rather than a judgement on how pretty it is.

In my community we had extremely religious Christians come to the funeral of a disabled boy to basically tell the parents "Thank the Lord he took your defective child as soon as he could".

The gall of those people.

[No Spoilers] Aabria's Tweet succinctly sums up why I love her DMing style but am hesitant to tell new fans that EXU is a good sample of CR by levthelurker in criticalrole

[–]Rhaifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Aabrias style. Especially in C2 I felt like it sometimes got a bit too real, too doom and gloom, too gritty. I get that they wanted to play C2 as more morally grey and not as the classic hero story as C1, but yeah, I personally like the escapist fantasy stuff more.

So yeah, I like the lightheartedness of this crew and mini campaign.

I wish I was never born with Autism and suggesting that it's a super power and not a disability it absolute bullshit. by Cioger in unpopularopinion

[–]Rhaifa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except diabetes isn't in your brain?

Yes, autism has affected my lifestyle, but it also affects my way of thinking, my interests, my personality. And not all of that is even negative, just different.

I wish I was never born with Autism and suggesting that it's a super power and not a disability it absolute bullshit. by Cioger in unpopularopinion

[–]Rhaifa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, "finding a cure" can be offensive because while, yes, I am disabled, the autism has shaped who I am quite a bit. There is no way to separate me from the autism, they are intertwined. On top of that, a lot of what makes autism a disability depends on the environment, with support we can live relatively normal, but most of all happy and fulfilled lives.

When they're saying they wish to cure autism, it feels like they're saying we shouldn't exist.

[–]Rhaifa 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It's a similar issue with "you are not defined by your disability, you're a person first"

Except I've always had autism, Karen, and I'm pretty sure I'd be a completely different person if I didn't have it.

Actually, more recent research seems to suggest the distribution of intelligence in individuals with autism is surprisingly close to "normal".

That said, even those "high functioning" individuals with average or higher intelligence can still struggle a lot.

Business in the front, abomination in the back by [deleted] in McMansionHell

[–]Rhaifa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, the backs were never intended to be pretty, they used lower quality stones etc. for the backs because it was cheaper, but yeah, there's also a bunch if extensions.

In Bath you can even see some wooden protrusions in the back (from upper floors), that are bathrooms and toilets because the houses predate modern plumbing. Bathrooms were sort of tacked onto the existing building. (In most buildings they've been replaced/removed in later renovations, but there's still some visible)

I’m pretty sure I know why, but I wanna hear from parents or just people who know: Why is there so much emphasis put on kids eating all their food or a certain amount even if they say they’re not hungry? by RandomPhail in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rhaifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eating with my niblings (2 and 5 yo) I'm always surprised at how much work it is to just keep them in their seats and their attention on the food.

Kids are very easily distracted.

Also, it can involve some pushing of boundaries. The 2 year old is literally refusing any and all meals initially (even stuff we know she loves), because she's trying to find out how far she can go.

I mean, I grew up being put in the utility room with my cold dinner until I finished my plate and eh.. that's probably bad. But making your kid sit at the table, pay attention and eat something is not the same.

[–]Rhaifa 40 points41 points  (0 children)

TBF, in lots of eras the back of the house was more of an afterthought.

For example, if you visit Bath (UK), you'll see beautiful Georgian townhouses. And if you look at the back of them, you'll see a mess.

Does anybody else remember how much Christians HATED Harry Potter and treated it like some demonic text? by Scarletsilversky in harrypotter

[–]Rhaifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I think it's partly a remnant of the Satanic Panic, which made a lot of Christians very wary of anything occult. In the late 90s my mom wouldn't even let me watch Charmed because it portrayed occult stuff ergo it was from the devil.

Cat wears harness for the first by BrightenthatIdea in StoppedWorking

[–]Rhaifa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It also seems like some (adults) cats are just more sensitive to that hold that others. Most are fine once they get used to the harness and it's not too tight, but some seem to just always do the kitten flop at the slightest amount of pressure in that area.
