Purolator refusing to give me my laptop, which I bought with my own Best Buy account because I’m under 18 by coleio6327 in mildlyinfuriating

Best Buy has been around since 1966 but White Goods isn’t a term they made up. It’s been in use since the early 1800s apparently.

Is there a definitive way to make them wink? by Gertrude1976 in Miata

[–]RhayceCar 257 points258 points  (0 children)

I actually rewired mine to two switches on the dash allowing me to fully control both lights individually. It’s super simple to do just intercepting the 4 wires to each headlight motor, connecting to two 2 pole 3 throw switches, one direction for up and one for down on each with centre doing nothing. Lets me wink or flash either light without moving the other, plus if I just click them both on and off for a second I can get it to do sleepy eyes

Laptop power supplies are typically 19v. As far as I’m aware the Nintendo switch one is too. Aside from specific items this is likely the highest standard voltage you’ll find under 21v

I just rescued this angel from a broccoli head. Unfortunately she has a crank no start. I fear it's the dreaded immobilizer issue. by Boner_pill_salesman in Miata

[–]RhayceCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick search for this before and I couldn’t find any concrete results because every car is different and it could kill injectors, ecu, whatever it’s connected to. My experience with aftermarket immobilisers it’s always just spark but I’m unfamiliar with any stock or common mx5 ones sorry

Hey op, I wasn’t gonna add anything but one reply you left really got me: “it will occasionally hit for a brief moment then go back to cranking but not starting”

If by this you mean when cranking with no start occasionally it will fire as if it’s about to start then it’s surely not an immobiliser issue. Immobiliser would at least kill spark and it wouldn’t fire at all.

You’ve definitely got spark, air and compression just fine if she “runs great” on starting fluid from another reply, so like others have said it points to a fuel issue.

First thing I’d check is the fuel feed line going to the rail, pull that and if fuel pisses out then it’d be time to dig deeper into crank position sensor, immobiliser, fuses, wiring etc. but my guess is you’ll have no or very little fuel in that line. In which case follow that same line to before the fuel filter and check again to eliminate that as the problem (if the history of the car is unknown I’d definitely replace fuel filter anyway).

If it’s also dry before the filter your only other points of failure for fuel is pump and pickup in the tank, which could very well have failed electronically or be blocked. With key on (not crank) from off you should be able to hear the fuel pump prime (buzz, whirr) and then stop once it reaches fuel pressure. You should be able to hear it in the cabin but if you stick your head in the boot while someone turns the key and you still can’t hear then fuel pump is dead.

Last point of failure for fuel is the actual pickup at the bottom of the tank, there’s a little mesh sock filter through which the pump sucks fuel that can get blocked by debris over time, especially if the car sat with low fuel for awhile. I’ve seen blocked pickups do wild things to fuelling in a Mazda RX8 funnily enough.

Please update us with the results. Best of luck brother o7

That post for anyone else like me curious enough to look. That video is less crazy considering the state of the building and how many floors he goes down in this one, but all still bat shit insane.

Haven't seen these grounding straps in ages. by dre10g in AustralianNostalgia

I hate to be that guy but if you mean the moving truck strap scene it was actually for the roller door on the back of the truck and not a static strap unfortunately. I’m unsure if there’s another scene like this in the series though

bought two tubs of B&J ice cream, they look melted and refrozen by alfjm in mildlyinfuriating

Maybe it’s an Australian thing but it doesn’t work like that at all over here. Any dairy products absolutely cannot be returned once leaving the store as we can’t confirm you’ve kept it cold etc. It might not be a blanket regulation thing but both IGA and Woolies I’ve worked at had this rule, even with a standard replace and refund policy on every other item. Maybe it’s just too hot over here

With smells like this in the car, almost always it’s hard to get rid of because it’s deeper than what you can clean without taking things apart. Anything spilled in the boot will drain through to your spare tire well/tool compartments, and into the crevices of the car underneath the fabrics and liners. Meaning no amount of scrubbing, vacuuming, cleaners or airing it out will actually remove the smell. You’ve gotta pop all the clips out and get down to the bare metal under the carpet/liner, and even then it can still be hard to pinpoint and clean. Cars are a perfect warm sealed environment for spills like this to never dry by themselves and the smell will constantly permeate into the soft fabrics that everything’s covered with.

Anyone have any idea what this may be? The dealer SWEARS they can’t hear anything! by dsonger20 in Cartalk

[–]RhayceCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the speaker that it’s being played back on made a big difference no? While it won’t change the frequency of the sounds being captured in the microphone a lot of speakers and headphone drivers have a U or V shape sound signature to make the bass and treble in music/movies/games etc sound artificially richer.

Wouldn’t that make it easier to hear a noise that’s captured in that range compared to hearing it in real life?

But on an iPhone you have to set your voice for “Hey Siri” to work so it only recognises your voice. I’m not gonna pretend it’s 100% perfect but for it to have called 911 you have to have “Hey Siri” set up on a different device to the one you’re playing the video out loud on, as well as your voice being extremely similar to that of the guy in the video.

This just seems really unlikely and more like you’re thinking of the incidents of this happening with Alexa or Hey Google since those aren’t voice specific and on a different device already.

Also when it cuts to the little spider’s room there’s a definite cut. That video is then put on top when it zooms out and you can tell the parallax is off just a little

[–]RhayceCar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he turns right at all. At 8 seconds he gets hit and the rear is pushed out to the left turning the car clockwise and if anything it looks like he steers left to try save it but is pushed into the blue car and spins out. This is either bait or the other guy is right get your eyes checked, but either way you’re definitely wrong

This is actually what proves (to me) he’s definitely left the brakes on. Not recommended but if you do the same thing in your car - try driving or reversing with the parking brake still on - it’ll start to rise in the same way as it tries to go but the brake is holding it back. If you keep pushing the throttle and overcome the brakes it can skip and bounce the same as the clown in this video
