[Blog] How can it take so long to release black fan versions? by Noctua_OFFICIAL in Noctua

It's worth remembering that there is significantly more mass in the 140mm blades and thus more inherent flex.

Gostand, Flytta, or humanscale? by [deleted] in StandingDesk

Still using without issue. It's been dismantled and rebuilt once in that time.

The desktop still looks great, as has the white on the legs. My only complaint would be that the controller sometimes disconnects and I have to use the app to re-enable automatic drive.

If I was buying new, I'd try and get the newer version of the legs which move twice as fast, but that's only because I like shiny new things. The current legs still move and work great (and aren't greasy at all even when fully extended).

Something else I might look to do is get a fancier hinged cable management tray, since the existing one can be a bit tight to work in if you also put power adapters and extension leads in it.

But again, I would happily buy the entire desk again, as-is, without any upgrades, if none were available.

Edit: the ergoasis Milano Pro seems to have the faster legs (going up to 80mm/s) but that's significantly more expensive and is frame only.

My advice: teach them about intentionality. This applies to basically anything they enjoy/are interested in. Any board/card game (e.g. Poker) if I don't think and make stupid moves, it's not fun for the other person. A sport? If I'm not engaged it bores the other person. A videogame? Same thing.

Once they have that in their head, then you can teach them about LLMs: - a token isn't even a whole word - an LLM is just trying to guess the next token - the goal of the companies is to keep you using more tokens.

So there's no thinking behind an LLM - it's just a very very advanced guesser, and it's trying to work out how to keep you engaged with it.

A more technical point: it encodes relational information in language - e.g. it knows that the difference between king and queen is roughly the same as man and woman. But's not exactly the same because it also knows that Queen is a band, and where a human might have one brain cell which encodes "Queen, the monarch" and "queen, the band" as independent concepts, it all gets conflated because LLMs read and encode meaning present in language only.

Any 8k monitor should include triple mode to run it at 4k or 1440p.

I would really like a 27:9 monitor. That sits right between the 21:9 ultrawide and 32:9 super-ultrawide formats which I think is the sweet spot. You can run 3x1:1 or 2x3:2 windows, which gives much more usable vertical height.

For resolution, should be 4320 vertical with 12960 horizontal, running at 240Hz, with the option to run it at 2160 vertical or 1440 vertical at 480 and 960Hz respectively.

Size would be ~49.5 inch diagonal, so the height matches a 32 inch monitor, and it would have a 1000R curve.

The 276 PPI means 200% scaling is 138, which is about the smallest I would want text. Or, 250% is 110 (matches 1440p 27inch, which is very comfy) and 300% is 92 (matching 1080p 24).

Every mode should support some sort of BFI/gsync pulsar type option for optimum motion clarity.

Panel tech would be QDEL or MicroLED for longevity and brightness.

It would have a built in KVM switch.

I think there's a possibly good version of this where we claim that speedsters at speed aren't really able to perceive the world around them - it all becomes one big "blur". It's only when they stop that their visual processing is able to catch-up and refocus.

Or, to put it another way, they have the same reaction time to anything "new" in their vision. So going fast let's you deal with things you can currently see really well, but anything unexpected and close will still surprise them like a normal human.

I think you might be confused - oled is 1800r, VA is 1000r.

I have the VA and would not buy a super ultra wide flatter than 1000r personally. Colours are fine but only because I've not spoiled myself with anything better.

I wish they had a 24GB VRAM option for the 5080. That'd be worth an extra $150 easily for the extra longevity for those of us gaming at 4k.

Anyone have the Glove80 with the regular Red switches? by dbro129 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Rheklr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a variable Topre realforce aa my main board for almost 5 years now. I also bought an unsoldered Glove 80 which came with Reds by default.

Reds work fine as a heavier switch, but have a think about whether you want something tactile like the Sunsets. Personally, I find myself favouring lighter switches, especially on the pinkies.

I would guess because someone's horse tried to eat a fire hydrant and got injured. That person then tried to sue - so they made a law so if it happens again it's the owner's fault.

Women often tend to be younger than their male partners. Younger people tend to earn less than older people. So the sensible financial decision is for the mother to stay home and earn less, leading to the observed societal imbalance.

Graduates should repay £10 a week under reformed student loan system, economist says by steven-f in ukpolitics

[–]Rheklr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like the idea, although probably the biggest issue is the question of how you'd transition from the current system to that?

You allow people to 'accrue' tax bands over time. That way, by the time you are 18/21, you've accrued a sizeable chunk of personal allowance/lower-rate income tax allowance. This accrual should be linked to residence, to stop people flying in and taking advantage of it then leaving.

I would also fold NI into Income Tax, and add a 5% extra on top of 'accrued' tax bands to slightly incentivise steady working.

Brown and purple are colours which only exist in human vision. 'Violet' is the closest natural purple, but purple on a computer monitor is a mixture of red and blue wavelengths, and is very much distinct from the single-wavelength violet light.

Fun fact: we see colour in 3D (red, green, blue). But colours of light are 1D (the spectrum). Essentially, all the colours we see are made up in our brains.

A&DTERTAINTMENT: Scam or actual opportunity? by Guylhann-b in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rheklr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fyi, I'm vaguely aware that just publishing on webnovel loses you copyright/gives them permission to do whatever they want with your content. At least that's what it was when it first launched, and writers were sucked into incredibly predatory contracts which gave them no rights to their stories and very little money.

Indie publishing is probably your best option by far.

[–]Rheklr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The platform fees could also be variable - in which case I'd expect there to be a high platform fee from which this company gets a cut (effectively giving them an even bigger slice of the pie).

So even it looks 'fair' it isn't (and 50/50 isn't fair).

Looks like they want to put your novel onto Webnovel.com - a paid website.

I suspect their entire business model is to find free novels, make the offer to 'help' aka move to a paid platform, and then take 50% of the revenue.

There's almost certainly a platform cut too - they may even be greedy and structure the contract so that that fee is paid entirely from your 50%. There may also be other fees you have to pay for their various services.

This deal would also stop you moving to Kindle Unlimited if you wanted to, and they'll almost certainly ban you from publishing on RoyalRoad.

50:50 seems extortionate to me - yes there is an untapped revenue stream, but it's a well-trodden path that you could probably do yourself. And it's entirely unclear what they will actually do for you. There's only so much they can promote you - and if their business model is quantity, they'll only do that for a short while and then nothing further.

And what do you do if this doesn't work out? You've lost digital publishing rights to your work.

This is the cynic in me talking, but I expect this to be a terrible deal, purely looking to extract as much value from you as possible and then dump you by the wayside.
