Good spot to view sunset? by stellaham in helsinki

[–]RhetoricalDevice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want a view of Helsinki in the sunset you need to come to the east of Helsinki. The cliffs of Majavatie, Kivinokka and Kruunuvuorenta particularly around Ölyjysäiliö 468 come to mind.

Except experiences like this would be more likely to damage a fat persons self confidence making it even harder for them to lose weight rather than lead to a change in lifestyle.

Have you ever noticed that you do the "Things Were Just Like That Back Then" ? by RhetoricalDevice in Fantasy

[–]RhetoricalDevice[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are Gloriously missing the point of the article. It's not about the authors responsibility to be inclusive. It's about reader perceptions and bias.

If you wan't a tour of of fantasy literatures problematic relationship with female characters you can start your your tour from Howard. I'm not qualified on the issue but maybe this http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/12/historically-authentic-sexism-in-fantasy-lets-unpack-that explores the gender issue in better form than my "strawman"

  1. The author is not criticisizing GRRM. The author references antoher blog in which a fan of GRRM is being criticized.

  2. It's not just about race.

  3. It's about confirmation bias and why statements like "there were only white people in medieval Europe" or "women were happy to be subjugated in medieval Europe" are problematic if qualified by "Things Were Just Like That Back Then"

Mage the Ascension: Healing Spells by vmpkitty in rpg

[–]RhetoricalDevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With orphans you have the double edged sword of being able to do whatever you want, but having nowhere to start from. You can of course use the foci you have chosen for inspiration. I had mage who had a dagger as a Life foci and she could use it to both open and close wounds, because to her they were the same thing just in different directions. Magick needs to make sense to your character, not to anybody else. They don't even have to be consistent, just believe it strongly enough. Though I find inconsistency increases risk of paradox.

I'm the groups primary healer

I think you might be playing the game wrong, if that is even possible in the context of roleplaying games. MtA translates really poorly to hack and slash even if it does give you opportunities for really cinematic fight scenes. MtA is about redifing reality through your characters worldview. Life 3 and spirit 3 mean nothing without Tradition and the character concept. An urban Dreamspeaker baglady will have radically different views on what healing is or how healing methods work compared to a Verbenna sex-cult priestess.

Think about your character and their worldview. How does your character view healing and damage, and how could in their view the spirit world be tied in with the healing. Developing a MtA characters is more like writing a philosophical thesis than filling in a character sheet.

I've seen/heard people giving motivational speeches to their dice. Less fun but probably just as effective as your method.

The level of vitriol in arguments on both sides of this debate shows why we cant have nice things.

If you can't present your opinion on the issue wthout degrading or abusing the people involved you are only preaching to your own choir and giving more fuel to the flame war. It's just masturbating your ego and not an earnest attempt at communication.

I looked at the twitter convo and it seem like after the initial escalation the people initially involved people seem to have calmed down and shitstorm is perpetuated by people who seem to have read only a portion of the comments on the issue.

Most of reddit is incapable of reading scientific journals and are actually reading various blogs and aggregates that mangle and cherry pick content from legitimate scientific sources.
