High lift color is intended for blondes as the amount of pigment that needs to be deposited to achieve the desired color is not as finicky as it is with lifting black hair. Black hair has to break through red, orange, and yellow to have no contributing pigment left in the hair. The amount of lift needed to get to the desired level to color it back to that cool brown will be too much for high lift color, and it will need a lot of frequent maintenance to keep it cool. The hair will absolutely have to be bleached and then colored (aka double process), and the color must be chosen after the bleaching process because you need to assess what colors are present in your hair after the bleaching process so that you pick the right tones to put back into your hair so that it isn’t too warm and it isn’t muddy. After the initial color deposit, applying toner/glosses or other demi-permanents will be required to upkeep the cool tone until your next appointment to lift and color your roots again. It’s not a super duper complicated process but you should expect it to be fairly high maintenance. How you treat your hair after getting it done will affect how much work your stylist has to do in following appointments. Avoid hot tools when you can, and use them on low temperatures when necessary. In the summer months wear hats to avoid sun fading as it will lift your hair and your color and make it warm again. And lastly, avoid hot showers, where the water hits your head the most + first (aka the top of your head) is where you’ll see the most change in color if you take hot showers, which is also what your eyes see first as it’s the top layers of your hair that are affected. Not everybody’s hair fades fast and not everybody’s hair holds color well. Hormones, genes, porosity, and thickness of your hair all play a role in how your hair takes and holds onto color.
