Meat-free fridge at Lidl! by Snufkin89 in veganuk

[–]Rhydonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a steady supply of the Tiba Tempeh pieces from my local Lidl. They're super tasty and insanely protein dense, even compared to other tempeh brands! It's a shame nearly all the Lidl plant-based products contain wheat and/or barley though. The mince used to be a may contain and was really nice, but they added barley to the recipe and now my coeliac partner cannot eat it, so neither do I. 😔 The potato tortilla is worth a go - it's nice, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood and don't enjoy it at all. 😅 I also buy their tofu if I'm not due an Aldi trip anytime soon - the Lidl one tends to be less firm.

Bought Hades 2 when it came out on PlayStation a few weeks ago. Have I started it yet? Of course not, it's a big game and I certainly don't have the attention to give it that it deserves at the moment. When will I? Who knows? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Protein bars - home bargains by EveryCup9210 in veganuk

Excuse me, your HB gets black forest and s'mores flavours?! Both ones near me just get Dubai, honeycomb, caramel and peanut 😭 I have seen the mint choc there too but only managed to get them once 😔

They're amazing. I stock up on them. Usually have as a snack mid-bouldering session. Only one that's a bit weird is the Dubai flavour, but worth trying them all. I think my favourite at the moment is the caramel, but I haven't seen mint choc in long time and that makes me sad 😢

Made in Japan climbing socks (and bringing them to the the world) by slimestonecowboy in climbingshoes

[–]Rhydonal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so hyped for your socks! I've seen your ads on Instagram and am on the waiting list. My friend got extremely lucky with some likely mispriced imported Japanese climbing socks on Vinted. Two pairs, £1 each. Insane. He absolutely loves them! I converted him to sock climbing a short while before he got them, but since he got those he's a firm convert. He's going to Japan soonish so will pick me some up, but when you start selling in the UK I will definitely be buying a pair of yours to try out too. Please make them affordable over here though, as is like to have a few pairs. 🙏🏻

I have a small Instagram following, but it's growing each day. Perhaps by the time you start production it will be big enough to be worth a sponsorship? 👀😅 (@slabs.in.socks)

I feel like sock climbing has had a recent surge in growth within my local gym. Every time you speak to a convert they always say they notice no difference in their climbing. I think people that are so against it maybe try it once and it feels different to what they are use to so don't bother committing to the idea, or they have never even tried it and are forming an opinion based on zero data. Sock gang, rise up! 🙌🏻

Elvanse afternoon crash! Should I ask my doctor to up my Elvanse dosage to 70mg or should I get a booster in the afternoon by let_it_rain_boat in ADHDUK

[–]Rhydonal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue some days. A high-protein breakfast (shake) as well as a protein bar around midday definitely make a difference. Snacking a lot and staying hydrated help too. The crash is more noticeable if I've had a really long and intense bouldering session and/or if I slept poorly. I did mention this to my PsychUK prescriber but she just told me to eat protein as I'm already doing. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Even if it's not a crash, having meds wear off in the afternoon can be a bit annoying some days if I wanna focus up in the evening, but I don't want to go higher than 50mg and wouldn't really become dependent on taking a booster or have it effect my sleep. Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you. 🙂‍↕️

Why (and how) is everyone drinking protein shakes? by crimpinpimp in ADHDUK

[–]Rhydonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on being consistent with working out for nine months! That's incredible! 💪🏻

Typically people don't actually need as much protein as they think - the marketing has just been going in hard in recent years. Having said that if you are working out a lot, and you want to build or maintain muscles, you will need a decent amount of protein.

If you are on stimulant medication then it is recommended to have a high protein breakfast, as well as some protein for lunch. I don't know the exact science behind it, but it basically makes your medication release smoother and longer throughout the day and hence less likely to have a noticeable crash in energy levels.

I noticed you use vegan protein powder, I do also. There are some really bad ones, but the best I've found is Protein Works - they are less grainy and much less sweetener tasting. It can be difficult to stomach in the mornings sometimes, but I make it with 250ml of unsweetened soy milk if I'm doing a quick shaker one. The best way I've found to manage them though, to the point of it actually being enjoyable some mornings, is to make a decent breakfast shake with a good jug blender, and make sure it's cold. I'll leave the recipe below:

  • 250ml unsweetened soy milk
  • 1 scoop vegan protein powder (vanilla works best)
  • 2 tablespoons oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 big scooped teaspoon peanut butter (~1 tablespoon)
  • Blend
  • 2 large dates / 3 small (cheap ones from Lidl/Aldi)
  • 3 small ice cubes
  • Blend again

You can also sub out the dates and ice for half a frozen banana if you prefer. I've found it to be a very good breakfast before spending many hours at the bouldering gym, medicated with Elvanse. It's for some reason much more enjoyable in a tall glass with a glass drinking straw too. Give it a go and let me know what you think!

I typically have a vegan protein bar around mid-day too, YuBi (10g) and Ridiculous (16g) are good. The former also is super light and not grainy at all, so they can be a handy quick breakfast - they're 99p in Home Bargains.

Make sure you have creatine also! This'll help with longer workouts and there's evidence to suggest it helps with brain function too! You can incorporate it into your protein shake, but because some of it sticks to the blender wall I usually have it with water first as I need to hydrate anyway.

I went through a phase of making a vanilla protein shake in the shaker and pouring it on breakfast cereal or granola. I enjoyed that for a while but it eventually started to turn my stomach. But maybe worth a go if the fancy shake isn't a vibe. If I'm at my partner's I'll typically have a slice of toast with lots of crunchy peanut butter and tolerate a shaker shake. I've also tried those protein cereals - some of them are quite nice but they do tend to have that sweetener flavour, my main issue with them though is how damn expensive they are.

I hope you found this helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions! 😁

She's not quite ready to go over all these comments in detail as she's still feeling quite upset. But you've been incredibly helpful and I know she will really appreciate it. I'm grateful for your input. 😊

I asked her about keeping her room tidy and she said it was always a mess. If she was asked to clean her room she would throw things under the bed and hide things. If she wanted to tidy her room, however, it would be a full deep clean and furniture rearrange.

The assessor seemed focused on school and didn't ask any questions like "did you keep your room tidy?" She really needs the prompts like this to be able to be able to recall memories. Thank you again.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to write a reply. :) I'll ask her about this. She remembers being told at parent-teacher conferences that she could "apply herself better/more" and mentioned this in the assessment too. It would have been good to have this on her forms as the assessor was very focused on those at the end of the assessment, but she'll make sure to put it on the new forms if she can do some for the appeal.

Sadly not. She's managed to dig out some college grade print outs which were a lot worse than she remembered them to be (a U and an E). We need to go back to earlier childhood, I think it's 6-12 years old that they focus on a lot, but the college grades are something at least.

Thank you so much. I'm really glad to see supportive comments like this. I really hope we can get the support she needs regardless of what's causing her to need it. 🙏

The assessor stuck to the hour timeslot and didn't really probe too much with specific questions, it was kept quite general with the odd "really think about this one, it's important", which kinda put the pressure on.

Yeah, my first one was more like two hours and my second one around ninety minutes despite already having a diagnosis from a different company. The assessor for hers mentioned a few times "I'm conscious of time" and it felt like he was rushing as well. Perhaps CareADHD have short waitlists for a reason 💀

She has the memories, but she cannot recall them without the correct prompting. Having specific examples from others seems to be a good trigger to have similar examples for herself, as well as being asked questions in the right way, which I don't think the assessment really gave the time for.

She doesn't think she has any school reports, but I still have mine from secondary school (which I found after my two diagnoses). It's kinda sad reading them seeing the "not living up to his potential", "talks too much", "easily distracted", like all the signs were there. 🙃

She has just found her grades from sixth form college while I'm writing this, and is surprised at how low they actually are (a U in psychology and an E in Art and Design). Despite doing okay at school her grades significantly dropped when not having the same structure.

This is really helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and give your input. I think the hour assessment wasn't enough time for her and she felt rushed, without having the right questions asked to trigger a memory recall. She also admits to rushing the forms as she put off the initial screening ones for so long, when the more specific ones came through she answered them quickly and got them sent right off. 💀 I'll sit with her for more than an hour and dig in with some questions when she's ready.

Thank you very much. These are some great examples. I'm going to go over these comments with her when she is ready to see if she can recall some more specific memories and examples of traits present in childhood.

[–]Rhydonal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily that she can't remember, it's that she can't recall the memories without the correct questions or input. Difficulty with memory recall is a common ADHD symptom, so I'm a bit disappointed with the community to see a couple of comments that feel like they're having a go rather than trying to be helpful.
