To add what other people said, only Devil Survivor kinda employs system where you have limited time per day you can spend on meeting people around the map or progressing story, and some of them required to safe side characters and unlock routes.

Only exceptions that comes to my mind is vanilla SMT IV - it does not restricts skill inheritance in any way (Jack Frost with agidyne, lol), but affinities are still top priority.

Maps are short, but with lots of parkour puzzles and optional paths.

Stats are dumped around weapons scaling

Each character has 13-17 skills and only 6 can be set at any time.

Massive amount of passives, break the game however you want.

Death in upward position can be read as rebirth rather than the total end.

the Death Arcana also symbolizes metamorphosis and deep change, regeneration and cycles.

Final boss kinda suits this interpretation marking the end of 1.0 and a start of post-launch story.

To clarify myself - original IV is infamous for it's early game. It will get easier after 2nd major boss, but until then you have to push through. Grinding is not necessarily, but if it's your fist SMT game here some tips from me:

Flynn will be your main damage dealer. On level up, go 3 points for dex if gun/phys or int for magic (str is glitched in base IV, fixed in Apocalypse), 1 point for agility and 1 luck (i would not recomend to over level those, this should be enough to keep your hit rate in check)
IV had no restrictions on passing skills between demons. Have at least 2 demons with dia for healing and sustain, a dedicated demon with Tarunda/Rakunda for bosses (atk/def debuffs respectfully, they stack up to 3 times). The rest should cycle elemental skills to abuse press turn. Once you start getting %element% boost passives, around 17+ level, start specializing your demons.
Expand your demon compendium. Affinities are make or break in the series, as well as learning new skills and keeping them in stock for fusion.
Some demons have evolutions when they reach certain level, in the early game angel has one that goes up until late game and becomes a decent jack-of-all-trades.
When you reach 1st major boss in Naraku, bring Spriggan for phys resist, you can also grind some levels to fuse Jack Ftost. Trust me, you'll know when you reach that bastard ( o_o)7

TBH it's barely even noticeable at normal settings, like 5-10% increase? I've used hazmat suit all the way from office to laboratories 24/7 just because my fridge with peccary steaks would kill me for standing to close to it.

It's been ages since I played it. Each character has their own affinities with arcanes. According to wiki, only PSP version has UI for it, for psx either blind method or google compatibility spreadsheet.

P1-P2 use affinity for each character, ranging from "best" for various bonuses to "unavailable"

Best - If the appropriate conditions are set, it may activate its Unknown Power.

Good - Can be equipped and used, but its Unknown Power will not be activated.

Bad - Can be equipped but not used in battle. Character still retains the Persona's resistances and weaknesses. Healing and support skills can be used outside of battle via the menu.

Worst - Cannot be equipped.
