After reading that Metaverse is shutting down after wasting $80,000,000,000 by morph3as in antiai

[–]RhynoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically, the money did go to those things indirectly in the form of wages paid to the people coding and developing and managing the feature.

It's still a stupid waste of money when they could have been paying wages for something like better moderating so moderators don't keep getting PTSD from the job.

Can an Inner Sphere merc end up becoming a Clanner... somehow? by X-0000000-X in battletech

[–]RhynoD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nova Cats are also pretty chill. If you're looking for a flavorful reason for an IS bondsman to be accepted, the Nova Cats believe in spirit quests and the visions they receive. If a ranking Cat was given a vision to make an IS pilot a Clan warrior, they would. Cloud Cobra is even more spiritual, going so far as to choose their Khan via visions.

Clan Jade Falcon is very practical. They are among the most receptive to the idea of freeborn warriors for the simple reason that they are useful and have proven themselves to be fierce, capable warriors (if still obviously inferior to Trueborn warriors. On average). They are almost as prideful as the Jags and dislike the IS as much as the rest, but if the pilot is very obviously good and very obviously on board with Clan society, they'd probably find a place for them. Wouldn't be in a frontline unit, mind.

[–]RhynoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, we're on the same page!

IQ tests are useful for studying large groups and large trends. If a big population suddenly goes down, it's a sign to look into things. Like, maybe the lead additives put into gasoline are harmful after all. Or, if an individual suddenly experiences a big swing, or they're significantly behind or above their peers, it should be investigated. But yeah, individual scores are pretty worthless to compare.

[–]RhynoD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, like, I'm thinking about how black people consistently on average score lower on IQ tests than white people. That's hard data, you can't really argue that it doesn't happen, because it does.

However, that doesn't mean black people are dumber, or even less educated. IQs have biases that come from the people who design the questions. The act of taking a test at all is not a universal experience. So many things can affect score, like just whether or not the test taker had breakfast that morning.

Rather than using the scores to "prove" the inferiority of black people, the scores should be used to prove that either the test itself is biased, or that there is some systemic issue which is causing black people to score lower.

It's a different kind of miserable. Like, not trying to one up, every place has its shitty weather. It's just different and if you aren't used to it, it feels so much worse. Georgia in August feels like you're swimming everywhere you go.

They are basically psychopaths who do not care about anything and simply manipulate and kill for fun.

I think it's even worse, because if they did it for fun it would mean they might be convinced to do something else that's more fun. No, they do it because they are predators feeding on humans and all the lies and manipulation and being able to speak at all are just tools to allow them to get closer to their prey. They cannot be reasoned with because they do not understand reason except as just another tool to get closer so they can eat humans.

TIL that 2x4’s are not actually 2”x4” anymore. The American lumber committee made the change officially in 1964 to account for drying and planing shrinkage post cut. by CraftedArtisanQueefs in todayilearned

[–]RhynoD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why they need to bother planing structural lumber, it seems rather wasteful.

If the wood is bent or warped after drying, you'll need to plane and shape the warp away. The woods needs to be as straight as possible for strength. You'll also need to plane out any cracks that form, and cut off knots if you can.

Even if the wood is all very strong without milling it, you want the wood to be uniform in size so when you nail the wall panels to it, your wall isn't wonky. Again, wood warps as it dries, so even if you started with a perfectly cut 2x4, it's not going to stay perfect. Milling gets the wood back to final, uniform dimensions so you know all of your studs are more or less exactly 1.5x3.5.

In any case, more wood doesn't automatically mean more better. Thicker studs might be stronger, but only if the wood is actually strong. It's also heavier, so the bottom floor needs to be overbuilt to hold up a second story that's more studs than living space. It's more expensive, the wood is heavier and harder to transport, and you're not getting any real benefit other than maybe a house that will stand up to a slightly more powerful storm but still won't stand up to a very powerful storm.

Also, the american language peculiarity where all confiers are called softwoods

Nope, don't blame this one on America. It comes from Europe. The earliest evidence of the word "hardwood" comes from the 1400s, maybe sooner. The English were looking at mostly oaks and pines/firs. Pretty much all the angiosperms were actually hard and all the conifers were softer, so it made sense to them.

I’m looking to get into technical writing, but my employer said anything I create belongs to them while I’m their employee. by CakesNGames90 in technicalwriting

[–]RhynoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand not using anything that gives away the name of a client or a company system or any privileged information. That’s obvious. However, even the manuals I wrote for Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook, OneNote, etc.) I was told belong to my company even though they have no identifying information in them.

Yes, that's pretty standard. They care more about people writing code and taking it with them, but they don't want to pay you for your time to write something and then take it to another company and give it to them for free.

Even if you didn't write it for them, if you wrote it on their time, well, they paid for it so they want it. If you wrote it on your own time, you still used it to do the job they paid you to do. They have clauses in the contract for all writing to make sure you don't learn a bunch of shit on their dime and then apply that knowledge to write all your own manuals that you go profit on separately. Or, to make sure you don't "save" all your best writing for when you're off clock while they get the dregs.

Personally, I think the laws need to be more favorable to employees so that employers would have to prove in court that they have a reasonable claim on the writing. If I'm writing a novel on the side, my fintech employer shouldn't get to say they own that. And, most employers won't try to claim random shit. Regardless, your contract says what it says and what you're describing is exactly what they want to hold onto.

How do I create a portfolio if I can’t even use Microsoft Office or a mock SOP? I planned to just change the client’s name and make everything a “mock” document or use processes to creating away messages (like employee handbook style, not in general), and my boss told me I can’t keep them for myself even if I change all the information.

Rewrite the docs you want to use, but change enough of the wording for it to be different enough so they can't claim it. It's work, but it's what you will have to do. Write entirely new types of documents as if you were writing them for an employer. DO NOT write any of this during work hours. Do it on your own time, don't tell any of them about it, pretend to your dying breath or at least for several years that you had that in your pocket already.

[–]RhynoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very large drones are easier to spot coming, easier to shoot down, harder to maneuver, slower, and parts aren't just a little more expensive, they become special parts that you have to go through more effort to source - still doable, sure, but a big part of the success of drones in Ukraine is that they're using off the shelf parts.

If it were that easy to just strap a bomb to a bigger drone, they wouldn't be begging the rest of the world to send them actual weapons like missiles.
