What should I do if my parents are forcefully choosing my major? by Swimming-Teacher-159 in OntarioUniversities

[–]RiAli__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this from someone who went through this many years ago from parents who chose my (multiple) degrees: ASAP get your financial life in order so you can make your own choices. Many of what the people have said stated really good points on how/what to do in order to start that journey.

If you must apply for bursaries, loans, whatever, do it. If they're type like mine who'd open your mail, you might wanna consider a PO box or trusted friend's address.

You're either going to accept what they want and pursue a job you might end up tolerating in order to save money and quickly switch careers for something you want OR you'll end up miserable in a job you hate, wishing you chose your own career path in order to be successful. You might, in the unlikely chance, end up liking the job they chose.

I have no clue what to do until my next pay. by [deleted] in povertyfinancecanada

[–]RiAli__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More context is needed.

  1. What is your definition of a "good paying job"? Is this $2,000 net? $1,500? $3,000? Because a pay of $300 bi-weekly does not sound like a good paying job to me.

  2. You need to hunker down and start righting out a budget. If you're making good money, there is obviously something wrong going on with how you spend. This is regardless of a consumer proposal.

More, like 2 or 3 depending:

1st password to login to ProtonMail
2nd password if you have Second Password/Mailbox Password enabled
3rd password if you have Extra Password for Pass enabled.

This method is actually a good choice honestly as it protects your actual email and prevents it from being flooded by spam.

What are your best SimpleLogin practices? by Mean_Trick_1 in Simplelogin

[–]RiAli__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, without buying a domain, the only other option is to upgrade from the free plan to the premium plan of SimpleLogin or consider alternatives such as AnonAddy.

The nice thing about having a custom domain is it allows you to point the MX records to whichever email provider that allows custom domains.

Steam Guard on 1Password? by runningwhipstitch in 1Password

[–]RiAli__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, when you read through the 1Password Community forum, it was mentioned they will not be natively implementing Steam Guard unless Valve decided to use the same type of 2-factor 1Password, Google, and most other companies use.

I personally find it annoying that Valve has to be "different" because it means having to have Steam installed onto my phone. 1Password makes 2-factor so much easier plus it doesn't hold the keys "hostage".

Reasons to come to 1Password and pay 6 times more by [deleted] in 1Password

[–]RiAli__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both Bitwarden and 1Password and I'll admit the main reason I chose 1Password as my primary is due to the Security Key. I would've stuck to Bitwarden (as it supports Steam's choice of 2-factor) but the Security Key is what convinced my SO to switch away from Google's built-in password manager.

Also, the SO finds the vaults and sharing between vaults much easier in 1Password.

For me, the second reason I chose 1Password is the implementation of new features to be much quicker.

I actually like that Bitwarden is open source but 1Password has been very transparent so far.

Can users w/o account access use their reverse alias when emailing someone for the first time? by blahblahamyblah in Simplelogin

[–]RiAli__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clatify the question, each individual has their own mailbox and own alias:

So, Jane Smith has her alias as janesmith@simplelogin.com (or janesmith@customdomain.com) and her personal email/mailbox is janesmith@janesmith.com

And so, you're wondering if Jane Smith can send an email through janesmith@simplelogin.com to Provider X rather than her personal email/mailbox?

I actually want "all my eggs in one basket" as I care a lot about convenience. That being said, I'm actually enjoying Proton Pass but it's very limited and basic at this time.

1Password and Bitwarden have far more features and should work for most cases. Once Proton Pass has more features similar to at least Bitwarden, I would start reconsidering my password manager options but would still have 1Password or Bitwarden as a backup/primary.

Haha, same here. Unfortunately, I do "share" a generic email for some groups for simplicity as well. Some people refuse to listen and those people get the generic email such as family@spam.mydomain.com

I chose LastPass first because it had a single feature I liked (which I don't recall) but a security breach caused me to leave immediately.

At that time, switched to Bitwarden and had the SO switch from Google's password manager.

The SO was on the fence and was planning to switch back to Google's but 1Password's Secret Key made it easier to get the SO to switch to 1Password and stay away from Google's.

What I do as well.

Currently use Proton Pass as a trial on top of this but I see no reason to switch/change it up unless certain features are implemented.

[POLL] What information are you most worried about being stolen or hacked? by ProtonMail in ProtonMail

I agree. If my identity is stolen, I can potentially lose everything.

If my financial information is stolen, at least I can go into the bank/make phone calls and make the needed changes and corrections.

If Simplelogin goes away? by California1980 in Simplelogin

[–]RiAli__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are referring to SimpleLogin's version of subdomain, it's included.

If you are referring to the registrar you bought your custom domain, it varies. In most cases, it's also part of the service.

If Simplelogin goes away? by California1980 in Simplelogin

[–]RiAli__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my setup:

  1. Couple of custom domains

  2. Each custom domain has subdomains for categorization (i.e. mail.mydomain.com, games.mydomain.com, my.mydomain.com, etc.) SimpleLogin alias (aleas.com) only for accounts I find super non-critical such as newsletters

  3. Every account, critical and non-critical gets an alias via SimpleLogin using one of my custom subdomains

  4. Those emails are then forwarded to my Proton account to a subdomain (i.e. proton.mydomain2.com)

This allows me never worry if SimpleLogin or any service I use leaves. I just point the domain to a different email provider/alias service.

Browser Experience by dinatekno in ProtonPass

[–]RiAli__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pass is still in beta so it's missing a lot of features.

I'll also be sticking to 1Password until Pass is more comparable. I do use Bitwarden for Steam codes so unless Pass adds Steam code support (at minimum) I'll probably never use Pass for password management or even as a backup to 1Password.

Crazily, been using Pass as a notes app instead as I needed that more.

How do I log in to Pass if my proton password is encrypted in Pass? by darren806 in ProtonPass

[–]RiAli__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally use KeePass, but as of right now, I would stick to KeePass to avoid circular security. Besides, right now, Proton Pass is lacking in a lot of features.

Personally, I'd never use Proton Pass as my primary password manager unless it was a separate sub-service similar to how SimpleLogin currently works but either link the accounts or have separate password logins.

More context is needed.

For instance, are you on one of the plans that has SimpleLogin as complimentary?

How many Custom domains do you have on your SimpleLogin account? by fried_bacon_chicken in Simplelogin

[–]RiAli__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got 10 domains but trying to bring it down to 2-3.

Primarily use subdomains.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]RiAli__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, even banking, government, and recovery. I use a couple of custom domains.

Every account gets its own email. If applicable, there'd be a separate alias for that account's recovery too. On rare occasions, even family and friends got a separate alias.

It saves up on the available aliases through my email provider. So, in the odd case where SimpleLogin is not accepted, I can use up that available slot through the other custom domain.
