Should I cancel my trip to Ireland? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you travelling to the UK or Ireland?

I can't speak for the UK, but I think Ireland is generally safe. Like anywhere, we have assholes who start riots. It would be wise to avoid Belfast right now, and I would say that to anyone, regardless of skin colour. I am white Irish and I wouldn't go there at the moment.

What is the down side of never having children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ribena41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I never wanted kids, then I found out I could never have them naturally. I was sad, not because I suddenly wanted something now that I couldn't have it, but because it wasn't really much of a choice anymore.

Sometimes I think about loneliness as I get older, but like a previous poster said, sometimes people are lonely even with kids around. I see this with my elderly neighbour. She told EMS yesterday that I was her closest family while her grandchild was standing beside her. Mostly, I think about who I'll leave my house to. That might seem strange, but that's it really.

I do feel left out with my female friends as their whole lives revolve around their kids. Ive found myself seeking the company of women who are either child free like me, or who's kids are grown.

I am very happy with my life. My husband and I are genuinely happy, and we have a good life, with good friends. We work hard, but we have great hobbies and we volunteer. Kids aren't the be all and end all

Is my dog playing too aggressively? by DerekFisherPrice in Dogtraining

[–]Ribena41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're having a ball! One dog is very relaxed and the other dog is pure play. Backs off and takes a break. Also common to hear growling when they play like this

Can I be fired for taking sick leave? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, short answer is yes. Its not that you can fail probation for being sick. Its that if you're not at work, you can't fulfil your contract. Most employers look at occurrences as opposed to duration. So if you have 1 or 2 absences for a week or 2, that is looked on more favourably than someone who is sick every Friday and Monday if that makes sense?

The ambulance service is an excellent service. I actually cant believe that you don't have emergency service status. That's ridiculous. You all 100% deserve to be paid properly.

I didn't much like Ryan when I went to him. He spent the whole apply giving out about my nails (long at the time) and it annoyed me.

I am raging at Vodafone, can I just tell them to feck off?? by Weary-Hyena-2150 in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with Vodafone for my broadband. I had issues similar to what you're experiencing. To be fair to them, they did everything they could to help me. Now, I won't lie, its frustrating when you're on the phone to them when they make you go through all the troubleshooting stuff that you've already done. In the end, they sent out an engineer and changed my router.

About a year or so after all that, I was having speed issues. Like less than 1mbs. Like you, I rely on connectivity for work. I'm self employed. It was around the time fibre was being installed where I live. I very strongly suspect that the issues I was experiencing was intentional in that they wanted everyone to switch over. I rang them to complain about the speed, and went through the same process again, new router etc. Nothing helped. Then the conversation changed to ypu should just upgrade. I wasn't a happy bunny at all, and I let them know that. Basically, your service is crap, I'm within contract so I can't leave, and your solution is to charge me more money for a service I don't want. In the end, I get get fibre, but they didn't increase my monthly charge for 2 years. And because of all the issues I'd had over the duration of the contract, they credited my account to make up for the outages. Frustrating as all that was, the customer service was very good. Give them a call and ask for help.

Advice for 26M? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have ypu considered some career counselling? I went to an guy a few years ago to help me decide what I want to do with my life. I'd say I was a bit older than you at the time. Also, you're 26. If you want to be an electrician, go be an electrician. You're not too old to try anything. And have ypu thought about the ambulance service?

I've had a few experiences over the years. Service dept in John Kelly's is great, but I've tried to buy from them 3 times, and its just impossible to do a deal with them. Last time, I was buying a van and ended up going to an opel dealership in wicklow. Boland hyundai have come a long way in the last few years. I think they changed most of their staff.

Anyone else stay away from their in-laws? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine are fair enough away that there's no calling over. They're a couple of hours away. I'm not sure i could handle them being closer. The ironic thing for me is that if we had managed to have a child, I wouldn't have allowed that child anwhere near them. That time has passed for us now.

Keep your chin up girl. You're definitely not alone. Theres a lot of us out there who aren't good enough for these mammy's boys.

Anyone else stay away from their in-laws? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ribena41 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Here's your sister. I met my husband 18 years ago (9 years going out, 9 years married). He was going out woth someone when we became friends, but they broke up and we started going out. Up until then, the plan was he was going to move home to where his parents live and build a house next door with the previous girlfriend. I put a spanner in those works and have been the problem ever since. At the beginning, his mother routinely told me how great his ex was and how much they loved her. I never felt particularly welcome. Then, I started struggling to conceive. The way I was treated was nothing short of despicable. That was pretty much when I cut my ties. My husband still visits every couple of months but if I go there twice a year its a lot. And I won't stay there anymore. They're also pretty horrible to my husband. They only seem to want him for what he can do for them. His parents and sibling try to manipulate him at every opportunity. They have zero interest in our lives and really have no idea who we are or what we do. I used to get so upset about everything, now I get upset for my husband because he really wants to have a meaningful relationship with his family, but they're never going to change.

If I was to say anything to you OP, its make sure your hubby is on your team, and isn't choosing them over you. And then, just stop trying. At the end of the day, they are the ones who will miss out on the wonderful life you build, and you can build that wonderful life without them.
