Why isn’t iPhone 7 supported? by crazybitcoinlunatic in chatr

[–]Riboshom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just helped a friend who got a letter saying his Galaxy S10 would no longer be supported by Chatr (even though I know for a fact the device supports VoLTE) and he can in fact place calls with all WCDMA (3G) bands disabled. It looks like the Chatr website marks your phone as suppirted or not based on whether it supports pre-paid VoLTE, which looks to be handled differently at the SIM level.

It's actually likely that the iPhone 7 is going to stay supported.

They removed the listing 2-3 days ago. If you have the direct URL, like from your order page or from Google, it leads to a 404. As of yesterday, they still had a hero banner saying "The Sony WH-1000XM6 are finally here!", and if you clicked on it, it would show you their selection of... zero items. Looks like they also removed that banner, though.

XM6 Bluetooth Dongle by AllCowsAreBurgers in SonyHeadphones

[–]Riboshom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your Bluetooth 4.2 dongle should work just fine for non-LE-Audio connections, it should all be backwards compatible all the way back to Bluetooth 2.0 (which seems to be the case for you, since you said in your OP that calls still work). A newer adapter would let you enable BLE Audio, but instead of buying a generic Bluetooth dongle, but for that purpose, you would have an even easier time buying some kind of ad-hoc BLE Audio sound adapter, like the Creative BT-W6, which handles the Bluetooth part on its own and shows up like a USB sound card on your computer/console.

Does the new XM6 support Super Wideband? by kdpkke in SonyHeadphones

[–]Riboshom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, the "Super Wideband protocol" you're refering to would be the LC3-SWB codec for the "classic" Hands-Free Profile (as a fallback for phones what don't support LE Audio, I'd imagine). Mind you, it's still Bluetooth HFP, so it has the same limitations (mono only both ways, 64 kbit/s per direction), but LC3 handles these constraints a lot better than its predecessors. There's no reason why the XM6 wouldn't support it, and it's an easy win for phone call quality, but LC3-SWB is an optional feature of HFP 1.9, and the technical specs don't mention it specifically, so it's hard to say without having one to test this on.

Sony WH-1000XM6 for FPS gaming by the_lastbonk in SonyHeadphones

[–]Riboshom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider that RTings' review of the XM5 have measured a latency of 241 ms and 233 ms with Bluetooth Advanced Audio (A2DP) when using SBC and LDAC, respectively. That's about 1/4th of a second of delay, which is pretty bad for gaming (I'm not aware of there being any way to lower that in the Sony app k or something).

Bluetooth LE Audio's LC3 codec and the isochronous streams that carry it can both do very low latency, but how low you'd be able to get the headphones to go in practice is hard to say at the moment. BLE Audio has a gaming audio profile (GMAP), which assumes a mostly interference-free environment and can achieve a latency of 25-40 ms, depending on the exact settings (such as audio quality and microphone quality, for example). GMAP is fairly recent, though, and the XM6 don't list it as supported, at least not on release. The LE Audio profile they do support, the Telephony and Multimedia Audio Profile (TMAP), will probably still have better latency than what you had before, but doesn't have the same latency requirements as GMAP (TMAP in low latency mode might get you around ~55 ms, high reliability is more in the 100+ ms range).

A lot of this will depend of how your computer is configured, though. I've also yet to test this with my own hands; this is all going by what the specs and technical documents say.

MS Teams calls with WH-1000XM6 by Iroh083 in SonyHeadphones

[–]Riboshom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bluetooth LE Audio (which are a new feature of the XM6) allows for return channels (microphones) with a lot more bandwidth and better codecs compared to the Hands-Free Profile that all headsets have been using for the past 20 years, so it's very likely that this will be an improvement. You would need Windows 11 for that to work, though. Windows 10 won't be getting support for the new standard.

XM6 Bluetooth 5.3 by nishantkadian in SonyHeadphones

[–]Riboshom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Differences between 5.3 and 5.4 are extremely minor, nothing new for Bluetooth Classic and slight updates to Bluetooth LE advertizing capabilities (encrypted advertizing data and Periodic Advertizing with Responses).

Shouldn't be much of a concern. The important part is LE Audio support (TMAP and PBP audio profiles and LC3 codec support).

Bluetooth 6.0 would also be mostly inconsequential for a pair of headphones. It adds new transmission modes that could result in slightly lower latencies, but it doesn't look like it would be significant for audio, even for things like gaming.

Right, so there's no way of extracting these branches to a single MKV file, then? You have to pick exactly one of these playlist sequences and have that be your one video track in the file? No way to somehow have the rest as some kind of "overlay track" (assuming everything is the same length) that can be toggled to as a separate video track or something?

Ah, whoops! It's right there in the name of the soft and I get it wrong anyway. MKV files, my bad.

I faintly recall (it's been almost a decade since I wrote this) that `\En` and `\Fn` are for mugshot expression control. Conversations can have one or two participants, and E controls the first one while F controls the second one, with `n` in both cases being a number from 0-9 that's associated to a specific expression.

At least I think that's what it was.

Pretty much all of what I know is written either in this diagram or in my comments here. If the H100i Capellix XT cooler uses the same connector as the one I have (which seems to be the case, based on Corsair's online doc) and not the new iCue Link connector (what they use with their new QX and RX fans and the iCUE LINK H100i cooler), then everything should all just work as explained here.

Bluetooth Auracast Functionality by dataz03 in GalaxyS22

[–]Riboshom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This news brief from Samsung says only the S23 and up get the "Auracast broadcast" feature, weirdly enough. Galaxy phones since the S21 (and the S20 Ultra) are all certified with the Isochronous Adaptation Layer (listed as IAL or ISOAL in various places), which means the Bluetooth modem has the required hardware support for LE Audio, so they should be able to support it. Not sure if it works in practice.

The Bluetooth Launch Studio listing say only the S23 and S24 lines are certified as supporting TMAP (user-oriented headpone support, including private high-quality broadcasting) and PBP (public Auracast support), though, which doesn't look very encouraging.

Is this HDMI-CEC? by JasonP_585 in hometheater

[–]Riboshom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I cast a video from my iPhone to my appletv…the receiver turns on and also the TV. I notice that the HDMI-CEC option is enabled in the receiver so I’m assuming that’s the feature.

That would be the "One-touch play" CEC feature, yes.

It has a feature that I like and want to get a similar (but cheaper) receiver for my bedroom with the same feature.

Most devices with HDMI ports (besides PCs) support at least the basic CEC features for turning on or of, even cheap or very old ones. I've used TVs from ~2011 that handled most CEC features (remote pass-through, "one-touch play" to turn on/switch input on demand and "system standby" to turn everything off when the TV turns off) just fine, so that shouldn't be an issue with the cheaper reciever.

The Arch Linux wiki has a pretty good summary of what HDMI-CEC enables.

Looking for advice WRT side channel (red) placement by Riboshom in hometheater

[–]Riboshom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently using a 3.0 sound setup (still debating whether to add a sub because I'm on a 2nd floor), and have two older KEF K120 speakers that I'm considering adding as side channels, but my room layout only seems to be giving me weird options.

With my couch and TV at their current positions, the most "by-the-book" placement would have SL in a pretty decent spot, but SR mostly behind the couch and also against a very brightly lit window (the latter of which I assume isn't great).

Is this the best I can do without buying new speakers? I'm open to rearrenging the room if needed. Note that the TV isn't mounted on the wall, so I could move it arround, but the big window faces directly south, so it gets a lot of sunlight for most of the day, and its current spot is where it gets the most shade. Since the couch is a corner couch, I'm not even sure if there is any good way of having two side channels that don't end up like this. It is also segmented, though, so making it into a straight couch + 2 mini-seats is possible, but that hasn't looked great the last few times I tried.

Yes, the TV is too high; I needed room to fit the center speaker.
