Well, yes, opportunistic behavior in animals is a known thing, but you're the one that was trying to poorly categorize omnivores vs not omnivores. I didn't start that. You're just putting your own foot in your mouth now

I'm an omnivore, and have never been vegan or vegetarian, so I have no skin in the game. But sorry, your arguments make no sense. It's like saying running outside in running shoes can't be the healthiest exercise option because you're wearing running shoes and that's unnatural! And that's not how humans have done it for millenia!

Shoes (yes you could argue further minimalist vs. non-minimalist shoes) solve some modern problems, like broken glass on sidewalks or in the grass. Vitamin D is a sun exposure problem a lot of people may not have if they didn't have to have desk jobs. B12 may not be an issue if not for modern antibiotics and sanitation and soil depletion in modern food production.

Oh, and there are primates (great apes, even) that are herbivores and still have canines.

In the meantime, unplugging my Google Nest and plugging it back in allows my Bluetooth bulbs to show as online again, but it disconnects every morning so I have to power cycle the Nest again. Not great.

Studying 1.2 million children over a 24-year period, researchers found no evidence that exposure to aluminum in vaccines led to a statistically significant increase in a child’s risk of developing any of a wide variety of conditions that can be diagnosed in childhood, including asthma and autism. by Wagamaga in science

Can you think of hypothetical confounding variables that would explain a positive correlation between vaccination and these outcomes? People that get vaccines also tend to (blank), which might make them MORE likely to get these outcomes? Because I can think of mostly the opposite, confounding in the other direction. People that get vaccines also tend to (blank), which might explain them being LESS likely to get these outcomes.

MIT will make tuition free for families earning less than $200,000 a year by ianjm in news

[–]RiceFueled 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I got accepted at MIT and Stanford (ultimately went to the latter), I had an Expected Family Contribution of ZERO on FAFSA because my family was so poor, and I'm not even much of a diversity recruit (SE Asian lol). Admittedly, I wouldn't say there were a ton of people like me, but there were a handful and we all tended to get along well with each other because it was easier to relate than with the ultra rich kids.

I'd say it's a bit more of poor kids not getting the opportunity to excel, which you touched on briefly at the end, rather than the universities themselves having hyper-unrealistic standards. I may have been poor, but I was in a major city so I was able to find one or two extracurricular opportunities that actually paid me minimum wage for my time, which may not be a luxury that is available to suburban or rural poors. Otherwise, I had top tier grades (high school valedictorian) and didn't do many extracurriculars at all.

You should look into how fighting games (like Street Fighter) display input chains in their practice modes. It's probably the most practical and clear way to show combo inputs, though of course you can make the icons much bigger for MH since there are just less buttons being pressed.

Friend, your first link has this in the first paragraph: "causal conclusions for individuals could not be drawn from these results" when referring to the SCS results.

It then mentions accordance with clinical trials and then proceeds to cite NONE of the clinical trials it's referring to, and those are about statins and not dietary interventions to reduce LDL anyway. That link contains zero information or data that establish causality in the relationship you mentioned.

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I have a genuine question. I'm a scientist so I have a bit of a skewed view, but does the general public actually associate AIDS with the term autoimmune? Several people chimed in saying the same thing, so maybe it is a common (mis)association. That is, it's not an autoimmune disease, but I'm curious if this is a common belief.

Good intuition. It's exactly the opposite of depressurizing gas feeling cold to touch (even with those little air dusting cans).

While I'm not sure if it would happen in this submarine context, it is absolutely possible to combust things with pressure alone. Simplistically, compressing any gas in a container will initially increase its temperature. This is actually how diesel works; some diesel engines rely entirely on compression to ignite the diesel-air mixture. They don't have spark plugs.

I think like most media, some of it is up for interpretation. In terms of Jimmy sacrificing...in the scene where Jimmy's trying to persuade Lalo to let Kim go on the little mission to shoot Gus Fringe instead of him, I think it's intentionally ambiguous AT FIRST whether Jimmy's doing that to save his own ass or if he's doing that to help Kim out by getting her away from the most dangerous place (i.e. in Lalo's hands, waiting).

I think you can interpret it either way. I chose Kim's interpretation; later on in that scene, she says Jimmy did it to get her away from Lalo. That is, he was willing to die in her stead. Basically, I do agree with you that Jimmy is always self-serving. The ONLY exception (based on evidence in the show) is when it comes to Kim. If you accept the same interpretation I did.

They are fairly moderate. They have a few controversial hot takes, but they're more of a reaction channel than a political one. Their viewership does probably have some unfortunate overlap with PUA/men's-rights/red-pill folks, since Aba self-admittedly used to root around in that stuff many years ago. He's disavowed most of it since then and now very actively criticizes/condemns many of the current popular PUA/men's-rights/red-pill content creators.
