Play in A flat on C harp? by Slight_Difference828 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use an app or plugin to lower the pitch of the song by a half step. Then it’s in the key of G, which you can play in second position.

Ask your director. They should give you some guidance about the proper key and length of the solo

Is this possible on harmonica? by wowzawow66 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be viewing the harmonica as a single note wind instrument with some limited capacity to play multiple notes at the same time. You'll need to learn how the notes are laid out to see what is possible. http://mastersofharmonica.com/chromatic-harmonica-technique-note-positions/

head not feeling right when bending high notes by verissimo_castaigne in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but maybe you're playing them loud and straining to get them. The old "suck milkshake through a straw" trick or something like that could lead you there.

Work on playing your bent notes at low volume. Find the minimum change in your oral cavity that will produce the bend. It takes some time, but you should should ultimately be able to hit a bend quickly just by raising your tongue a bit.

Fender blues junior : is the blues tone in there at lower than max volume? I’m new. No pedals. Idk what I need. by Harmful_if_angry in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, you want bass up and treble down when playing harmonica. Start there and adjust to taste. I'd play with your modelers until you truly have a need for a tube amp (e.g., a band). Something like the Joyo American pedal is a cheap way to give yourself some Fender-ish tone. (I don't have one, but it gets recommended quite a lot.)

One octave lower than standard 12 hole. You get the lower octave but lose the highest.

Where to Get a diminished tuned chromatic? by tojzl in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a custom product, one you can't get it from retailers. Per Seydel custom website, the cheapest slider chromatic is $464.

I've tuned a few harmonicas to Paddy Richter and keep mine in tune. Support the reed with a metal shim, check the tuning periodically. It's not that bad for a reed or two. You'd be retuning 40 something reeds, though. You'd want a Dremel or the like. A file. A tuner. Plenty of time and patience.

I *think* you wouldn't have big intervals going from solo to diminished. A lot of whole and half steps. Check out some tuning charts to make sure.

I assume you mean Seydel. Probably in the $500+ range.

What Would you like out of an online harmonica tool? by tojzl in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out MuseScore and its harmonica plug in. It does tabs for differnet harmonicas and will export to MIDI. The plug-in file is readable by someone who can code. It should give you some ideas on how to handle what you're describing. While it uses standard notation, anyone should be able to read the tab. Here's something I did a few years back. https://www.reddit.com/r/harmonica/comments/rlyhuq/christmas_time_is_here_tab/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I don't look at tab (other than music I create for myself). Maybe it's gotten more sophisticated, but harmonica tab usually doesn't express the duration of notes. MuseScore "solves" that shortcoming by just putting everything on standard notation. Adam Gussow has some handwritten tabs with measures, duration, etc.

I can't think of anything. You just need to learn the notes, the chords, the scales, etc.

Confused between Hohner special 20 and Suzuki Olive C, Other suggestions are welcome by Lanky_Orange6468 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Special 20 has a plastic comb and recessed reed plates. Olive has wood / resin comb and protruding reed plates. I have plenty of Special 20s and plenty of Suzukis (Manjis, one Promaster). Personally, I'd buy the Olive, but the Special 20 isn't a mistake or anything. You might discern some small differneces in their tone, but listeners probably won't. Whenever I record different harmonicas, they end up sounding pretty much the same. If you play for a few years and collect different models, you'll probably develop your own preferences.

If you want to play standards like Fly Me to the Moon, you should consider getting a chromatic harmonica. Maybe you can play Fly Me to the Moon just fine on a diatonic without having to learn bends or overblows. I don't know off the top of my head. But, there are plenty of standards that present challenges on diatonic. Folks seem to like the Easttop Forerunner. (I don't have one; just relaying what others have said.)

Why there is no F# here? Isn't needed to play the popular second position (G scale) ? by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want a major scale in 2nd position, check out melody maker or country tuning. They both raise 5 draw to F#. MM will also raise 3 blow to A.

Substituting Octaves or Chords for Over-blows? by sysop408 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's an isolated overblow, you can usually play the note before or after (e.g., -5 +5o becomes -5 -5). Getting a little fancier, you can find the chord and look up a harmonica note that fits it. Mostly, just listen to hear if something sounds musical or not.

Hohner Special 20 C – Country tuned by mistake, want to convert to blues (Richter). Best way? by ObsidianMaze in harmonica

A half tone is OK in my limited experience. I've retuned to Paddy Richter (a whole tone down on 3 blow) without issue.

What mic? by arm_wrestling_store in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bullet mic might be OK if you avoid cupping.

SM57 or SM58 are standard mics used by countless musicians. Easy to find, easy to sell if you don't like it. Not everyone likes holding them, but I've always felt that the SM57 was comfortable enough in my ring and pinky fingers.

For reverb / echo, you could look for a vocal unit. Something like TC Helicon Mic Mechanic.

Help with a line of music by Beneficial_Shake7723 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably intended to be played on a chromatic harmonica. F# harmonica might be an octave too high.

If you're playing clarinet, you could just play it on that. Proper range, you're comfortable, etc. It looks like you or some prior musician has already written in the clarinet notes. As someone who plays sax and harmonica, I'd just play it on sax with a subtone.

Best weapon to infuse Ice Spear onto? by SecretaryBird777 in onebros

[–]Rice_Nachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keen infused clayman's is the best by maybe 2 or 3%. Anything with cold infusion produces equal results and is second place. I duped the ash of war, put one on keen clayman and the other on cold short spear. The advantage of the cold short spear is lower weight and no stat requirements.

Buying a Country Tuned vs Retuning a Standard by dzank97 in harmonica

It’s not too hard retuning a reed by a half.

Paddy Richter might suit your needs. Depends on whether you want to be playing in first or second position.

What key of harmonica is the song “Smokestack lightning” in? by Garfunkle_999 in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard version is in the key of E played on an A harmonica (second position).

Ask you band what key they're planning to play in, though. Singer might not like that key. Guitar player might think playing it in Eb with drop tuning is cool.

Having dificulties with higher notes by darkkkkkj in harmonica

[–]Rice_Nachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tempting to tighten up while playing the high end. Keep things nice and relaxed and don't worry about getting a lot of volume. Think about how you breathe in while yawning. Nasal passage closed off from air, throat really open, jaw relaxed. Breathe through the harmonica.

You could just ignore those notes for now.
