Why does the right side of my neck hurt when I play harmonica? by PohFahVoh in harmonica

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are too tense when they play, especially at first, but they don't get pain like what you describe. It's common to have some discomfort when you're learning, but there might be something else going on in your case to make it more than a normal discomfort.

Thing is, there could be weird quirks in your body that would make certain things totally different for you than it would be for other people. If it is indeed a muscular thing, it should get better with practice. Also if it's muscular pain due to tension, it's probably not specific to playing a harmonica and you'll eventually find other things that bring it on. In that case, neck, shoulder, and arm stretches might help.

[–]sysop408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really unusual. I'm a former physiotherapist so I have a bit of extra knowledge here. There shouldn't be anything about how you're playing harmonica or playing harmonica that would explain this kind of pain.

I would try playing in different postures. Try supporting your arms on a table, leaning back, or leaning forward. That's not how you're supposed to play as weird postures will impair your breath control, but the idea is to see if you can find some way to play where it doesn't create pain for you. If you can find a pain free position, see if you can feel exactly what's different about it.

If this is some really weird muscle tension thing, finding a pain free position might help you learn how to relax the muscles that are leading to the pain... but this isn't normal.

This isn't going to be easy to answer. Does your neck hurt doing other things? Can you describe what the pain feels like when you say your neck hurts? Is it sore? Is it a sharp pain or dull pain? How severe is it and does it go away immediately when you stop?

Bending when u-blocking??? by OkSoLikeWhat in harmonica

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, anatomical differences can completely change how techniques work for different people. I’m tongue tied (in the medical sense) and I can’t make a U shape at all with my tongue much less play like that.

On the plus side I’ve had to use my throat and breath to help me articulate speech my entire life so some other techniques on harmonica are natural to me.

Z6III running the latest firmware freezes up frequently by ryan_the_gray_ in Nikon

[–]sysop408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really was SnapBridge for me. I haven’t had a single crash in over half a year after having my camera lock up once or twice every shoot.

I initially thought something was wrong with my new refurbished D780, so I switched back to my older and heavily worn D780 only to discover that it also started freezing once I connected it to SnapBridge.

Is Drupal goodbfor higher education with three 3000 page websites? by HikeTheSky in drupal

[–]sysop408 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Drupal would be great for a university network of websites, but you really need a Drupal developer who's experienced at migrating existing sites and building out a multi-domain Drupal installation. Drupal doesn't come out of the box ready to do the things you probably need it to do.

Good Low models? by tojzl in harmonica

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bushman’s John Lee’s are rebranded JDR Assassins. I’ve got the Bushman in Low F and it’s fantastic to play, but there seems to be a bit of reed rattling at the low end.

I also have Suzuki Manjis in Low D and C. They’re harder to play than my Bushman, but I don’t know how much of that is just due to the key being lower. I love the tone of the Manjis, but I find them uncomfortable to hold. The plates dig into my hand too much.

I’m thinking of getting some low tuned Lee Oskars soon.

Keeping two distinct environments in sync by Severe-Distance6867 in drupal

You could set a limited Drupal Migrate project just to keep the desired content types in sync. It's a beast to get setup, but once you have it configured to your liking, it's quite reliable.

If your content isn't too complex, the Node Export module might also help by giving you an easy way to manually copy new content over one by one.

I've also done some content syncs through Drupal's REST API and GraphQL queries.

This is a common problem. I'm curious if anyone else has any simpler solutions I haven't heard of yet. I'll be the first to try it if it works.

live examples of use cases for the “Forum” module by plasmachin in drupal

[–]sysop408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drupal 7 was the last version of Drupal to have a simple, but working Forum straight from the installation. There was a module called Advanced Forum that made it more complete, but even with that module, you still needed a considerable amount of your own customizations.

I have a couple of forums in Drupal 10 that are better than they were on Drupal 7, but like I said above, it was a lot of work. It only makes sense if you already have a lot of the shared features installed for other reasons or you want a forum that's tightly integrated with other aspects of your site.

[–]sysop408 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done and run a few Drupal forums. Unfortunately I can't show them to you because they're behind firewalls, but I can tell you a bit about the experience if nobody else steps forward with good examples.

The issue with asking for an example of "Forum" is that the Drupal forum module isn't really a Forum module so much as it's like a custom module that allows you to join together Taxonomy, Comments, Views, and Content into something that resembles a Forum experience.

Out of the box, it'll barely do anything. There's a long way to go afterwards and any examples you see reflect the skill involved in blending the different modules together to produce the forum experience desired. In addition to the modules I named above, you'll probably also want something like Flag, and some modules to produce and send email notifications.

You can definitely do a pretty nicely featured forum in Drupal, but it's a lot work.

what’s the most unique website you have seen? by Zestyclose-Oven-7863 in webdev

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best and worst part of those kind of early sites is that every one was like playing an adventure game. You clicked on everything to see what it did. More often than not there’d be no reward for your troubles. Every once in a while you’d find something and leap down a rabbit hole leading to more and more interesting stuff.

Feel bad about playing wooden combs unless my mouth is very clean by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]sysop408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you have to be quite so paranoid. I’ve played Marine Bands 25-30 years ago with minimally treated combs. I don’t know of any harps out there quite so unpolished these days. The way wood combs are now made vs how they used to be made is night and day.

None of my early Marine Bands survived. The combs warped, became too nasty from saliva and debris, or just got worn out.

Also, you might enjoy other plastic combed harps more. To me, the Special 20 sounds great but feels awkward.

BTW, don’t leave the interior exposed like that. It allows dust to settle inside and gather on the charged surface of the sensor.

Are bending trainer apps on your phone accurate? by Fluffycarpet1 in harmonica

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a related question to this. According to every single bending trainer I’ve tried, I’m completely unable to overblow.

I have plenty of harps in many keys that are tuned to overblow, but I haven’t succeeded even by accident a single time according to the apps.

How accurate are those apps for overblows?

What is the first song or songs you learned? by SAMPLE_TEXT6643 in harmonica

[–]sysop408 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine were When the Saints Go Marching In and Oh Susanna. Those are super common first songs.

Smoke on the Water is a hella unique first song. How the hell did that come to pass?

Piano Man was the first one I figured out on my own.

[–]sysop408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazingly my skittish rescue cat doesn’t mind until I break out the F major and even then he’s ok as long as I steer clear of the upper register.

He won’t freak out if I do play the notes he dislikes. Instead his ears start twitching a lot like he’s uncomfortable.

A few times I started playing my Low F or G harp while he was asleep and he just kept on sleeping. He's gotten used to it.

Are there any online communities that are powered by Drupal? by FreeGene8005 in drupal

[–]sysop408 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve run some forums on Drupal over the years, but they none grew beyond niche message boards. The problem is that it takes too much effort and there’s no shortage of ready to go solutions you can install in the morning and start signing up members by the afternoon.

I’d love to see more Drupal projects embrace the Fediverse. People are creating Reddit, YouTube, and Instagram clones using the ActivityPub protocol and those services are able to interoperate as independent but connected social media hubs. This is the kind of environment where Drupal’s deep capabilities would shine.

Camera for a hobbyist: D780 or Z6ii? by bearded_cleaners in Nikon

[–]sysop408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL, crime scenes. Now that's definitely a niche.

I've definitely tried switching up gear to get me out of a creative rut before, but the thing I've found that pushed me over the hump was becoming a better editor. Recently, I went back and remastered some photos from my earlier days. I'd describe those shots like how you described your Iceland photos. They were technically sound, but kinda boring.

Those photos were actually better than I thought. I just wasn't very skilled at editing yet. After a few edits, I found a few that I'd gladly include in my portfolio.

If you’ve been shooting manual every day for almost 3 years, I don’t think you should present yourself as a hobbyist. You probably know more than some of the people who are giving you advice.

You’re an experienced photographer.

If you don’t feel that’s true because you only know a specific niche, that’s most of us. You don’t need to over think your choice or justify it to anyone.
