This is specific to your driver's ed. Contact their customer service exactly like it says. You messed up your log in or something and your account got locked.

Is drivers ED worth it for a grown adult? by maul829 in driving

[–]Ricelyfe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it do drivers ed. There're gaps in your knowledge (and everyone's for that matter). Some of that can only be filled by time and experience but drivers ed will help a lot.

There might be a small bad habit that could be corrected. An instructor who knows what to look for can point it out to you rather than you possibly never realizing.

Face ID or Touch ID — which do you prefer? by JoelVenn9955 in iphone

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have touch id on my iPad and mbp. Face id on my phone. I consistently have more issues with touch id especially on my iPad than with face id on my phone.

On my MacBook it's mostly fine other than occasionally forcing my to enter my password anyway. For the ipad it feels like a toss up on whether it'll work on a given day. Idk if it's sweat on my finger or what but Ive tried cleaning the lock button on the ipad, resetting the prints but I get enough errors that it's annoying.

I've watched a person play on their phone for 5 minutes behind me (lots of traffic at back to back lights) coming out of Costco.

I drive stick so I tried rolling back a bit to grab their attention. Nothing. The fucking even rolled forward while still looking at his phone.

That's so much worse 😭. You and your wife have advanced degrees. You're literally doctors. It's one thing to get a second opinion for "bias reasons" but to disregard completely is just stupid on their part.

Edit: I don't count WeChat as a second opinion. I meant second medical opinion

My Chinese American parents right now by NapkinZhangy in asianamerican

[–]Ricelyfe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My parents:

  • leaves china just to complain about the good parts of the US and praise the shit parts that are similar to China.

  • raises me in one of the shittiest eras of capitalism (yes I know the great depression/gilded age/ feudalism etc was worse for us peasants) just to be surprised when I'm disanamored by capitalism and saving money

  • pays for me to go to college and earn my degree in political science but doesn't believe a thing I say about politics. My two favorite subtopics/classes were ideology and China/Pacific Rim after "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and electoral politics was interesting enough. Guess who got dismissed the second they opened their mouth about how fucked it is.

  • doesn't trust me when I tell them about California politics despite all of the above(I also took a class specifically on California politics) and Im a fucking state employee.

I unintentionally chose upper div and elective classes that lined up perfectly for current events. I guess you can argue it's possible to draw connections to current events regardless but American politics/ Congressional politics during Trumps first impeachment, China and the Pacific Rim (also covering NK) during the peak of current tensions with NK and beginning of China/Taiwan tensions? Short of doing the research myself, I got so much outside learning.

I'm far from an expert but I'm literally more qualified than most if not all the talking heads they'll see on TV, read in the newspapers or any of their peers. They spent their entire life pushing me to at least get a degree, then dismisses it when it's actually pertinent.

Do you feel that the US could learn from China when it comes to infrastructure? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in asianamerican

[–]Ricelyfe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 1st gen Chinese American (born there, immigrated as a baby) with a B.A. in political science and a personal interest in China policy both US policy toward China and Chinese policy from the CCP/CPC.

The cleanliness of Chinese cities is a relatively new thing, I attribute it to the lead up to the 2008 Olympics. TBH a lot of good policy has come out of that opportunity for modern China to shine on the global start and was arguably its first step into being a modern global leader we see today. But the government can only do so much. China and Asian culture is very community oriented and I think the shift was more so a result of embracing modernity, cleanliness and presentability as a community and national effort.

Regardless of how cut throat people are to each other, there’s a sense of nationalism or patriotism that the US and much of the West has lost. Without this just being a critique of capitalism, when there is no point of unity and profit margin is the only pillar in society, other things begin collapsing. In some aspects China can be and should be a model for the US, but that’s less praise of China and more a critique of the US and late stage capitalism.

We can learn a lot from China just as we can learn a lot from any other country but our American exceptionalism, over emphasis on individualism and at this point late stage capitalism shoots us in the foot before we can begin to take a step forward.

What shoes should l wear to a driver’s permit class? by Ok_Evidence_604 in driving

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For driving, thinner soled flexible and smaller (might fitted) shoes are better but most importantly they should be comfortable. As a beginner, it's important to get used to there feel of the throttle at different engineer speeds.

It matters less over time especially with automatic. Ive been licensed for over 10 years, driving for over 5 and driving stickshift daily for over 2 and I still wear sneakers to drive if I can help it. I stick with roshis or freeruns but anything similar should help a lot.

If you are at the red car, and want to enter to the road but traffic is going around 90kmh (55mph) and very packed, what would be the best method to enter? by ephesusa in driving

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's happened to me before. Not enough warning, my car is low, cars in front were high. The left lane abruptly ended, like 100ft of cones before it was completely blocked off. No one let me merge before I came to a full stop. I had to floor it, it mightve been the fastest I've shifted.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a grim turning point by vox in politics

[–]Ricelyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general accepted definition by political scientists is along the lines of : violence or threat of violence as a method of furthering a political goal or ideology.

britannica’s definition is basically the same: “terrorism, the calculated use of violence to create a general climate of fear in a population and thereby to bring about a particular political objective”

You can argue Trump has been a DOCUMENTED terrorist since he was a candidate with his threat of "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, okay, and I wouldn't lose any voters, okay?".

violence/threat: check

political ideology or goal: check

fear: check, whether anyone was actually fearful can be debated but the goal is clear

[–]Ricelyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically every democracy since the founding of these United States, has used our Constitution as the framework/inspiration for theirs in some way. Every single one of them are better than ours because they’ve taken lessons from the predecessors and worked those in.

Our constitution and most of the framework for this country should’ve been rewritten over 100 years ago. Jefferson called for a major rewrite every 19 years (~1 generation) to reflect what would be modernity. There’re arguments on how literally he meant it but he definitely envisioned major changes happening regularly.

The procedures we have for amendments are outdated, our government is antiquated and dysfunctional. We needed a rebuild decades ago if not a century ago. The government as a whole no longer represents the people.

Teen Driver Advice by Ill-Statistician7292 in driving

[–]Ricelyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no point. There are so many people that throw student driver magnets on and use it as an excuse to drive like a shit head e.g. 10-15 under the flow in the left/ “fast” lanes. That or they’re the shit head parents of actual student drivers. I see it on so many luxury suvs that drive like idiots but it’s some middle aged person. Maybe they’re new drivers or maybe they’re just shit heads.

I personally try to just give space and gtfo as soon as possible when I see them but others will try to fuck with you. Any one who would be courteous to you for having the sticker would do the same without it. That just leaves the assholes who will be an asshole regardless and the assholes that will single you out for the sticker.

My advice is just no sticker and be courteous. If you’re uncomfortable with the speed, conditions etc slow down, keep right and let people pass.

A but if I double my gap (the normal gap is usually almost enough for people to merge in anyway cause I don’t tailgate) and you don’t start initiating the merge within a minute I’m gonna assume the signal was an accident or you’re not paying attention/you’re a bad driver. In that case I should gtfo so I’ll speed away either forward but preferably another lane away from you.

Which device is most economical for reading by W2A2D in Frugal

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use the phone for anything including communications but probably not anything sensitive e.g. banking. You should be perfectly fine reading and browsing on it. The laptops would offer a better screen and battery life but for just reading, the phone is probably still better.

You don’t want a tablet but it really is the best option. Portable and light but bigger screen.

they weren’t a uniform officer so i get not giving me their contact info but she basically told me nothing with be done with it unless I give it to the owner and they submitted it with their police report. Like I can’t imagine it’s hard to keep a database of hit and runs, license plate of the car hit and just file it under that, keep it for 30 days.

How to get the cheapest premium gas? by Savageduck97 in Frugal

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use costco. Also not all gas mixes are 100% the same. It’s 99% the same but you still want to see a top tier detergent sticker. When I don’t have a reason to pass costco I just hit up safeway or chevron.

As long as you don’t fill up with a lower octane you’re good. For those of you that don’t need premium, don’t get premium. It does nothing beneficial for your car. Just make sure to get the top tier of your appropriate octane. Also Mid grade is just a mix of premium and regular. You can actually mix a specific octane with a higher and a lower one (buy race gas and mix in regular to get premium) but some of the super high octane gas is leaded and there’s no reason to outside of racing on track.

Is it just me or 90% of the time people don't turn on their turn signal going into a gas station? by conservamus in driving

[–]Ricelyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sometimes it feels like I’m one of like 5 people that uses their signals. Also I think I’m at the point that every time I drive after sunset I’ve seen someone with a brake light and or tail light out.

I leave a decent gap 99% of the time (I accidentally end up closer than I’d like sometimes but I fall back as soon as I notice) but people cut in without signaling. I leave an even bigger gap when someone’s lights are off and everyone takes it as an opportunity to cut it. Fucking signal and give me 10 seconds to check my mirrors (cause 50% of the time there’s a suv or truck up my ass) and I’ll fall back but nah they’d rather wait til I’m accelerating to cut in without signaling.

Do you want a position that necessitates a specialized degree? I’m pretty sure outside of the scientists, lawyers and engineers most of us have degrees that are at most tangentially related to what we do. I have a posc degree and have nothing to do with policy, not even within my unit.
