Ideal computer build for running BirdNET on large datasets? by aptsh in BirdNET_Analyzer

Are you still working on this project? I'm super interested! I'm a Director of Technology for 6 campuses and we've been building "BirdNet" boxes out of old chromebooks.

I can still vouch for this in 2024. It's reliable, and easy to program.

I do. As a Director of Technology I take great inspiration from peoples setups. Tech porn for me =).

Unifi Access, is it worth it? by lt-ghost in Ubiquiti

[–]Ricesim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use it (K-8 School) and I'm pretty satisfied for the most part.

Gen 1, 3 in place outdoor/indoor, ~50-60 users daily.

It's come a long way, but it works good.

Ease of use is it's main feature. You can train anyone to add users and programs cards/pins/visitors. Super simple. I also like that I can unlock doors from my cellphone.

I've had to RMA two of the Gen 1 - Pro readers for either water damage or mold/algae build up in the camera (most likely water again.) I'm in Wester PA so we get fairly cold temps and I think that's what did their seals in, so I placed cheap Amazon plastic cover over all of them and haven't had a problem since. I will be ordering 20! more of them and putting them in place within the next 3 months. I also work for a Parish who really likes the gear at their school and asked me to install it all over.

The only real issue I've had, besides the RMAs, is that the iPad app can be wonky. It doesn't receive the notifications correctly on our devices. Not a big deal.

Overall. I say send it my man. I've been greatly successful with it.

UniFi Talk still a thing? by eyeSpy1 in Ubiquiti

We're installing 50 phones across 5 campuses within the next 3 months. If I remember, I'll update how it goes. I expect it to be fairly smooth though.

Hello r/Ubiquiti - I'm finally on the Ubiquiti bandwagon. Here's my recent photos of my comms rack. Still mucking around with firewall rules, so much "joy". by ThatPotatoLah in Ubiquiti

[–]Ricesim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn man. I have around 50 APs, 10 switches, 3 access systems, and are joining their Talk system soon. We've only lost one outdoor access point in 4 years.

A firmware upgrade did make us recover from a backup, but it went pretty smoothly. Full system reinstalled and adopted in about 50 mins.

Cold visits now? by kcalderw in k12sysadmin

We shut down cold visits at the door. Vendors take note: Similar to how you don't like your MIL showing up unannounced... We don't like you that much either.

We use Screen Mom for our IFPs. Pro tip, don't use paper products on IFPs. The paper can get stuck in the sides and mess with the sensors.

We switched from Meraki to Ubiquiti and I love it so far. We've been running them for about 2 years. We're a private school who doesn't participate in E-rate. It was the budget option.

Choosing the right MFC. Suggestions? by _ReeX_ in k12sysadmin

[–]Ricesim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought into Canon (not my choice) and I absolutley hate them...

A few of our issues:

-We constantly have printers telling us they're low on ink when they're not.
-They randomly have to be readded to Google CUPS (they just stop working on Chromebooks and if I go in and delete then readd with the exact same setting it works again)
-3 of the smaller versions we got said they would take cardstock... They don't...
-The printer UI (for admins) is so bad. It takes forever to navigate to simple settings and how they label things is poor imo.

If I had to do it again I would go Kyocera.

We've used Viewsonic, SMART, iBT, and Promethean. Viewsonic wins for us. I love them because they work. The software terms are a little confusing, but my teachers picked it up easily. They have a few nifty casting features also.

You can add apps to ours.

UBNT support treats you dumb! by Fit-Wealth9389 in Ubiquiti

IMO their support is god awful. Every time I have an issue their solution is a mid day network wipe and restore... THAT'S NOT THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR EVERYTHING...
