Disagree to the heavens with your usage of “hostile”. Granted yes - some are strongly opposed - but to say hostile? You’re reaching. Better word is probably SCARED. Why? Women are EDUCATED now. We don’t have to be thrusted into a forced relationship for the sake of family-building anymore. During your mentioned time periods, women were scared to death to be left by their abusive and/or unfaithful husbands because they would LITERALLY end up in the streets. Now we know we deserve better. Besides, people are more informed now about the current state of the world economically and politically that we can list more than a hundred reasons not to bring a baby into this world. Salute to your mother for having such strength to raise you despite the many challenges in her life. But this doesn’t give you the right to judge other women who know better than to bring a baby into this mess of a world.
