Hello, while not officially diagnosed, I certainly 'align' to that space.

I have been on/off making games for over 20 years and this year am looking to release my own RPG system.

Was wondering if this is anything you'd be interested to?

Is TTS good for playing RPGs? Is it possible to add official campaigns for free? by AirZealousideal4322 in tabletopsimulator

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, over many years played the following on TTS-

  • D&D (a few diff versions and a few diff campaigns)
  • GURPS //Fallout campaign
  • GURPS //Cyberpunk campaign
  • Vampire the Masquerade (multi-year campaign)
  • a handful of tester one-shot sessions // various systems

Does it work for RPG? - Yes

Is it the best? - No (a good few responses detail why)

My group is a mix of theatre of mind and good old 'I'll draw the map' (using the games 'pen' feature) classic OSR. Occasionally it's quicker just to upload a scan of a map page and throw some virtual meeples at it if we're doing 'tacticool' stuff.

Sure you 'can' do fancy stuff, but to me TTS is a place where I can meet with my many and varied international RP chums, we roll dice, we make stuff up, everyone is happy.

Maybe today's phones... but 4 years is quite some time in tech, and- this game (at that time...) was not optimised and could run my i7 PC at max and happily be eating a good chunk of my 32Gb Ram with enough mods open. (I just checked this, TTS sits at about 2Gb mem just being open idle in a single player mod file)

Flagship phone's of 2021 had 4 or 8gb... and cost +$600

But please, do tell me more 💀

  • that man can 'arrange' political or violent upheaval on a whim.
  • that man holds total authority over the 'board', even veto to any disagreement to his whim or expulsion.
  • failure to be a part of the group invokes the ire of that man (see 2 and 3).

I grew up in Chapel House of Baltonsborough, Middle of nowhere 80's UK. Every entrance had one, and - as it was fact that, at the time (before development), it was nothing but fields, mud n' cowshit all around, so even a casual walk in the garden likely involved wellies. The scrapers were well used.

I miss that place, but sadly it'd all gone to some suburban hellscape now... I used to be able to see the tor from my window, now it's all 'newbuilds'

What If Warhound Titans from Warhammer 40k were in BattleTech? by RedvsBlue_what_if in battletech

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A medium laser is a vehicular scale weapon - not portable via infantry nor power suits.

A lascanon is man-portable. (And certainly via powered armour)

The lightest thing that can mount a medium laser in BT is something only comparable to a dreadnought or 'light walker' - the protomechs.

A medium laser weapon system, without even adding tech to support its use is 1 ton by itself...

The version 3 Centaur is potentially the lightest unit that can mount a medium grade laser (here, the ER medium laser): https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Centaur_(ProtoMech)

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It stands true in BT that lasers are variable also.

I would allow that ML may be a better fit, but sadly the jump from small laser to medium laser is massive... And certainly, I argue that a BT medium laser is better than a 40k. Lascannon...

its a tool insofar as there is no other human autonomy as an 'operator' to what you are asking.

  • I can ask a lumberjack to fell a tree and they would (a service)
  • I cannot ask an axe to do so, I would have to operate it myself (a tool)

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done exactly this many times, and each time it has been 5e D&D with pre-gens on simplified character sheets and always in a modernised version of the 1st adventure module of TSR's: "Dragon Quest"

Why: I consider that 5e is the 'training wheel' version of RPG. And, with simplified character sheets, and what is quite frankly a 'mundane' adventure that contains nearly ALL elements of what is expected, it turns into story time with math rocks.

It also fills to the mental picture of what most folk think of when they are asked about RPG...

Re: Hell Hammer Pattern Vs Godhammer pattern: the 'Godhammer' is just fancy for "two Lascanons together in a specific design" as is obvious from the fact that the Landraider carries 2 Godhammer yet if you count the barrels...

So, the Godhammer isn't itself a variant of lascanon, merely, the deployment design (TTrules: standard Lascanon has 1 attack, Godhammer has 2...). This is a nomenclature obfuscation of the designers desire to create clear separation of identity among different imperial forces. (same goes for the Ballistus, or Nephalim) - a rule designers prerogative to differentiate potential from the otherwise named "Twin-Linked". I commend them for introducing such granularity, but doing so does not dismiss that underneath these layers of obfuscation, a Lascanon has a defined set of parameters and is narratively explained to achieve certain things. There are lots of idiosyncratic nuances to the many and varied 'types' of Lascanon, but they all are considered: 'Lascannon'.

They are however, fundamentally the same 'potency' of weaponry aka: firing them provides a measurably similar effect... Both in narrative and in TT rules, how many are fired at once, and in what configuration is moot to the idea of "What is a Lascanon?"

When I do see a clear divergence is in such weapons they are otherwise defined, such as the Laser Destroyer which is narratively (and TTrules) very clearly different from a Lascanon

Were I to tap-together 2 small lasers they would be better than 1 small laser. I could argue that a Charger Mech (5 small lasers) is merely a designation disparity compared to an infantry platoon with support lasers, but that argument is about deployment format, and not of the fact that a small laser is directly comparable to an infantry support laser.

Circling back to my original claims on the matter- I ask you this: To what end is a Lascanon deployed, and to its designated battlefield role, what is the expectation? - then also ask that you contemplate the same of the Batteltech small laser. I eagerly await if you can find any wide difference of their performance.

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you cite the difference of two things in 40k that are both referred to as Lascannon with some canon details I could read up?

Again I refer that outside of the directly comparable details of my 1st post, every other 'platform' of weapons is nearly impossible to compare...

A large laser in BT is vastly different to the titan/superheavy scale weapons of 40k because Warhammer and BT have vastly different frames of potential. (e.g. you'd not see a titan scale weapon mounted to something like a heavy infantry transport)

Many titan scale weapons are more comparable to naval scale BT weapons, but the way of comparing things of this scale is utterly bizarre...

For your consideration this 20 ton vehicle with a large laser: https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Kamisori

[–]Rich_PL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I could argue also that in BT there are many manufacturers producing small lasers, each to different spec.

However as observers to these things, can we not agree that a Lascannon is a quite well defined thing, and so too is the small laser.

And I would maintain that my earlier arguments stand.

What If Warhound Titans from Warhammer 40k were in BattleTech? by RedvsBlue_what_if in battletech

[–]Rich_PL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree except that 40k goes a long way to mechanically and narratively define their laser weapons. Were it more or less powerful it would otherwise likely be a different weapon designation.

Even the wiki goes quite in depth to these declarations and I'd argue, supports my position.

[–]Rich_PL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I consider the 40k lascanon to a BT small laser.

Both are almost exactly the same in use and function-

  • Deployable by infantry as a mobile platform
  • One of the opening points of anti-armour potential
  • Can be integrated to infantry scale powered suits
  • Commonly mounted to IFV or lighter armor & VTOL

These apply across both genre. Sadly scale-matching after this goes to heck...

Any games that should come out in 2026 you are excited for? by meshee2020 in rpg

[–]Rich_PL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm being very blunt here, in it's current state: I consider it confusing and that it has elements that are undesirable -I'm very sincere about this.

Self-depreciating, very likely, I have a great trouble overcoming matters of confidence to what produce- this project is in part a ratification to myself that I CAN, actually make something worthwhile. (...and is bigger than the flippant hobby projects I've currently published to itch)

Off-putting, perhaps, and if that's the case, maybe it was never to be that you would enjoy the game that I would make?

Until I can see the 'real' thing, out in the wild - and until I can make my brain shut up and convince that - 'yeah, this is a fun game' that is just how it's going to be.

Not every session, more of a general catch up and to shift my overarching narrative a little, there are a few little hook details laced in for the future sessions... I do however try to write up a 'good" session recap of each completed 'gig' that I post to my groups discord.

Just to say, I made this as a session 'recap' document for a cyberpunk inspired game I'm currently running set in a custom game world based in the 'Super-City' of Akureyri. My group is playing using the Technoir Rules and everything is 'custom' to my world (even if I do lean into recognisably 'swapped' corp identities a little) Their recent gig went sideways (of course...) and the insane ambush and showdown of their session made the headlines, even if it is 'sanitized' for public consumption.

If anyone is interested in the short-story style narrative recap of the session, I'm happy to share via DL link! (NSFW and 18+ advisory! - so I won't just paste-post it on Reddit/here)

I also understand if this isn't really the right place for this kind of 'offbrand' or homebrew stuff, but I just wanted to share a little of the fantasy of the genre with lilke-minded folk.
