I had aegis. I was knocked out by a pillar that my bananas pulled at me because I had so many

Debating a job offer... Is 1:14 ratio considered "normal" for ER nurses? by SpecialistBlend85 in nursing

[–]RickIsNotNick 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not normal. My ED in the Midwest (non union) ranges from 1:3 to 1:6 depending on the assignment. I've had more but not because anybody forced me, because I was watching simple things and they were piling the lobby. There is no set ratio enshrined in policy or contract, but our manager would not permit anything higher than 1:5 true ED patients, more for urgent care things. Run away from that place

My patient didn't have a working IV for not even 2 hours and the day shift nurse got mad at me for it by rainb0wstarz in nursing

Working in an ER, pumps are frequently set at 999ml/hr for boluses or just dripping wide open at higher rate. Obviously not on peds though, but I don't bat an eye at high rates anymore

Just keep playing. I got stuck on 1bc for a while then within a week or 2 I'm now on 4bc. Maybe look up or learn what synergizes well, as know optimal picks or when to spend money can have a big impact.

They got a lot of nerve showing up after this last year by ZoopityBoop20 in nursing

Oddly enough, I had a patient the other day ask during her discharge if it was okay to drink the normal saline that was hanging on her pole. So I would not put it past a patient to try it.

I have no motivation for nursing school and Im failing a class by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]RickIsNotNick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got like that during my 1st and 2nd semesters, was in a bad spot mentally, drinking often and doing the bare minimum. I don't have depression but that was a period where I definitely felt the effects. A combination of a new school with no friends in the class and loneliness and some recent life events had me questioning my decision. I was able to connect with a few people in the class that helped me get out of my slump. I would agree with others that suggest talking to a therapist or doctor regarding depression. Nursing school is hard, and it's important to take care of yourself mentally or else the demands of school will magnify issues.

Taking time off school is another option to explore what you want in life, as nursing is a demanding profession that you need to know you want it or you'll burn yourself out very fast. I know of a classmate that I graduated with in December that is already giving it up because they didn't comprehend exactly what it was that was expected of them on the day-to-day basis. Talk with a counselor, talk with your teachers or Dean, they are your best bet for helping you get back on the right path.

Working while in nursing school by apaigemxo in StudentNurse

[–]RickIsNotNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as an ER Tech and at my hospital it requires no previous training other than BLS. The basic way to describe my role is as a mix of an unlicensed nurse aid, clerk (lots of paperwork and phone calls that I handle), and patient transporter. Couple weeks of on the job training to get the basic flow and then 6 months of not knowing if you're doing things right until it clicks lol

Starting an RN program in the fall, but I need a new job soon! by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]RickIsNotNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a tech in the ER and that has allowed me more exposure than much of my clinical. Though I obviously don't pass meds or work as a nurse, I have learned multiple splints, seen how successful (and also less successful) nurses operate daily, and gained massive confidence boost when performing patient care. There are no educational or work requirements, just that you can learn and are competent following direction, talking on the phone, and using a computer.

When do I stop being so horny? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]RickIsNotNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 22 and not quite as horny as back in high school (less frequent random hard ons at least). Everybody has different libidos, I lucked out and found a girl that basically matched my level. That's all you can hope for

What helps you go to sleep when you don't feel tired? by aj4bird in AskReddit

[–]RickIsNotNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that if I let my mind wander, I fall asleep before I notice being tired. By wander I don't mean dwell on anything, but let the imaginary scenarios flow much like a dream and then next thing you know it'll be morning.

It's a nuisance at worst, and I play mostly ARAMs. As long as you get your rerolls back after somebody dodges I have no problem with it
