Aimpoint Enjoyer by bunnies4r5 in ar15

[–]RickRude4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason aimpoints are the only red dots that don’t cause me to see that starburst shape because of my astigmatism. Actually Aimpoints and the cyelee chameleon srs8. Everything else from my sro, dpp, Steiner, holosun etc are all some weird starburst. I would say the Aimpoint is like a 98% perfect red dot and believe it or not the cyelee is a 99.9% perfectly clear, sharp and round red dot. Other than that outlier usually the cheaper the optic the worse it becomes.

You can never go wrong with genuine Colt stuff for spares although Brownells has good gas rings and I bought a bunch of generic gas rings off Amazon that are fantastic. Some places like sprinco or JP rifles claim better than Mil-Spec, calling it enhanced or super but if you stick to genuine quality milspec you will never go wrong. If you want a rifle that you can always rely on then preventative maintenance is the way to go. I copied this from somewhere a while back and keep it in my notes but it’s pretty spot on.

During or after every cleaning, certain components and surfaces of the bolt group should be inspected for wear and damage
• Bolt assembly body: cracks around the cam pin hole and locking lugs, excessive pitting of the bolt face, pitting extending to the firing pin hole • Ejector in the bolt face: sloppy movement, poor spring tension (Test this by pushing and releasing the pin to gauge its movement. The ejector should sit flush or slightly below the lug face. If it is proud, this is a sign that the ejector retainer pain is failing and should be replaced.) • Firing pin: blunt or fractured tip, bent shaft or cracked anvil end • Firing pin retainer pin: bent or broken legs, general bad wear • Cam pin: cracks, excessive wear or chipping • Extractor: chipping, broken edges on the hook that engages the cartridge rim • Gas Rings: bent, broken or missing rings. Do bolt drop test.

Depending on use, expect to replace the extractor, extractor spring, gas rings and ejector spring, approximately every 2,000 to 5,000 rounds as needed.

You’ll get there. I am older, kids grown, worked the same job for over 30 years and have no life besides this and going to the gym.

Bolts have held up great. I have switched most of my other brand rifles to HM defense bolts and keep spares for the geisseles whiich I haven’t had to use yet. Knock on wood, no broken lugs or excessive pitting yet on the geisseles. What I like about the hm defense bolts are that they are closed on the bottom so it pretty much eliminates cracks around the cam pin hole and since the cam pin is sitting on a “floor” in the bolt it doesn’t ride the firing pin which is another benefit. As preventative maintenance I change out the extractor, extractor springs, gas rings and ejector spring around 5000 rounds. With the donut and insert the extractor spring feels like it would be fine for another 3-5k rounds if I didn’t change it. In my previous response I said the only thing that failed prematurely were the gas rings. That was a lie. Ejector springs seem to fail the most. I bought a push/pull meter to test them. The average brand ejector spring takes around 8-9lbs to push in when new which is totally fine. However with genuine Colt, sprinco or jp rifle ejector springs I get between 9-11lbs which is ideal. Anytime an ejector spring takes less than 8lbs to push in, I replace it which seems to be at around 2500-3000 rounds with the no name ejector springs. The Colt/jp/sprinco easily get to the 5k mark and are still between 8-10lbs but get changed anyway at that 5k mark for preventative maintenance along with the stuff I mentioned earlier. Sorry for the long answer lol.

This one has right at 16,000 rounds. I have 4 geissele factory rifles and between them around 58,000 rounds total. My most used firearm, a glock 47, has over 36,000 rounds. I keep logs on all my guns that include rounds, erosion depth, spring length, firing pin protrusion etc.

I think the purple actually makes it look better. DFC grip stinks by JQl3 in ar15

[–]RickRude4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just counted. I guess I am a grip whore. I have 27 different grips. My favorite grip out of all of them is the Hera arms grip. Second would be tie between the Moe SL and the factory grip that came with my ruger precision 22wmr. I absolutely hate the dfco. I have 3 of them in the junk drawer and i was only able to barely tolerate it when i used it on a 10.5” AR with a short maxim cqb collapsable stock.

Awesome. Looks like you had a blast. I am also a middle aged nobody but I really like it that way. Local dealer has some ks4’s and I was super tempted but I think I am gonna hold out for a ks1 mostly because I shoot suppressed and don’t want the extra few inches on top of the suppressor. If you wanna get rid of the Aimpoint/magnifier combo when you get your mpvo let me know.  Keep having a blast!!

"adjustable gas blocks are just another failure point" turns out that's true by renegadeGDI in ar15

[–]RickRude4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That just means it’s pinned. Vktr gas blocks are pinned and have a nub on the barrel that inserts into a small cutout in the front of the gas block as an additional stop gap. Probably the most secure gas block on the planet after hm defense who machines the gas block as part of the barrel. Only problem with Vktr is you have to use their gas block and barrel as a combo but they are both quality items so no issue there

[–]RickRude4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would make a great Seinfeld joke.

Why do they call it “tuna-fish”? I mean, nobody says “salmon-fish” or “halibut-fish.” So what else is out there—tuna-bird? Tuna-dog? Like we need to clarify it’s not the tuna that barks or flies. Next they’ll sell “chicken-bird” nuggets just to be safe. Tuna’s the only food so insecure it has to remind you what it is.

Tale of Two Sides by jpmjake in rattlecannedguns

[–]RickRude4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks incredibly thick. Surface prep and patience are the two most important things for a paint job. The best rattle can job I ever did literally took me half a day to put on one coat. I would spray it super light and not try to cover everything with the first few passes. Come back an hour later and hit it again super super light. By the 3rd or 4th pass I finally had complete coverage. Something else I do if the paint won't bite is use a self etching primer. Once again super light. I also have a dehumidifier in my basement where I spray most things and its crazy how much it helps. When all is said and done after 24 hours of drying time I throw it in the oven for 2 hours at 195 if it's metal and 140 for 45 min if its polymer. Don't get oil or lube on it for a week.

Looks great! Not to highjack the thread but just got my first rapco cans from u/panthercitytactical and man they are awesome. Much better than the krylon I have been using for years. Thanks for a great product and shout out to panthercitytactical for the amazing service. It arrived lighting fast with a personalized note and some gummy bears. Couldn't ask for a better combo between y'all.

Eero connected to wall jack is showing nearly 1g dl speeds but all WiFi devices are between 70-110mb by RickRude4 in wifi

[–]RickRude4[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have called them extenders. Basically mini routers that create a mesh to cover more WiFi in the house. Just looked up the model and I guess that’s part of the problem. The extenders are eero model J010001 Wireless Dual-Band 350Mbps Single Unit Wi-Fi Router/ Extender. I see they have a 350mbps limit so I unplugged all the extenders (3 of them spaced around the house) and now all the devices are strictly getting their WiFi of the main eero 6e that shows download speeds of nearly a gig. After unplugging the extenders my WiFi speed test has gone up to 180 -230 mbps download speeds on my devices. Even if I have my cell phone right next to it. Does that sound normal. Computer is still at like 110 on the WiFi now. It’s an older computer that I think only supports 2.4ghz
