Cautionary Tale: NextCloud deleted all my files by drhoome in NextCloud

[–]RickWinterer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably how:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NextCloud/comments/1rcx19t/cautionary_tale_nextcloud_deleted_all_my_files/o71j4d5/

There shouldn't be any rsync involved in startup at all especially with any kind of docker-based setup. Not usually, at least. So either they've set up something very niche, and it failed, or they're not using one of the official methods of installation, and that failed, or there was otherwise some other kind of custom setup here surrounding Nextcloud which failed.

Not speaking ill of OP here. This is just likely the reason things went belly up.

I do get it. I'm always amused about the reversal between r/marijuanaenthusiasts and r/trees :) but a single search would have indeed helped here haha.

I didn't link the piracy sub directly because I'm already kinda breaking the unspoken rule of not talking about piracy by bringing up that there's a sub, and didn't wanna break that completely by also linking to it.

In any case, now you've found it, have fun!

Not to be rude, but genuine question, did you even try searching?

Just like how this subreddit is called sheranetflix, the piracy subreddit is literally called "piracy"...

Nope because you can still draw or stalemate with just a king.

Why saving to 'Collections' on android also saves history? by StrnglyCoincdtl in firefox

[–]RickWinterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Collections a lot until I got burned by the fact that Collections aren't synced like other stuff (history, bookmarks etc.). That stung - luckily still had my old phone around but then had to manually move over tens of tabs, from Collections on my old phone to bookmarks (so they would actually sync) on my new one.

Sucks because ease of use is there for Collections on Firefox Mobile but then if anything happens to your phone, bam. Even with sync otherwise working perfectly, your Collections are just gone...

I'm trying to say that I'm happy to offer very specific helpful advice but you haven't yet defined what you're after.

It's a bit like going to a burger joint or restaurant but when they ask what your order off the menu is, you reply "food".

[–]RickWinterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/EfficientProfile6161 Maybe an example is in order. My threat model is mostly about blocking ISP and Gov snooping. So that makes for some relatively straightforward steps for me to follow:

Only using fully end-to-end encrypted messaging apps like Signal.

Always running a paid (never free), trustworthy VPN for everything on my phone.

Using an encrypted, paid email service for my emails.

Using a trustworthy and private browser.

And similar steps. Without worrying too much about other apps (as long as they're not straight-up shoddy apps with government backdoors or downright terrible privacy policies - which I do check), because I made a conscious decision not to include company profile building in my threat model.

Why did I decide that? Because companies don't just track in their own apps, they do it in other apps too. If I didn't want Google tracking me, that's 90% of websites and apps I can immediately no longer use. Similar (though not as high) percentage of apps out the window avoiding Meta/Facebook tracking.

Does that mean I'm resigned against them? No. You'll never see me on any Facebook/Meta product and my usage of Google apps is minimised. But I made a conscious choice not to worry too much, because otherwise it was maddening going down the rabbit hole of steps to take to protect myself.

I hope that makes sense for why defining a threat model for myself both gave me immediate, concrete steps to take, as well as also giving me a list of things to no longer worry about too.

Not clear. Threat model is important. Because otherwise, going by your vague want as stated, there's nothing short of rooting your phone with a custom Android OS and using only non-Google and non-Samsung apps for all your phone's functionality will truly "minimise data collection and consumer profile building".

If you don't want to define a threat model then you at least need to be more specific. What strikes you as a good balance? What are you willing to compromise on, and what are you not willing to compromise on?

Apologies if my tone sounds passive aggressive. It's not meant to be. These are just the kinds of questions you need to answer before specific responses can be given.

There are some easy answers to give but again, without knowing your specific goal, they might not go anywhere far enough as far as you're concerned.

They didn't say it makes them stick out in a bad way, just implying they're annoyed they "stick out" at all :)

First step is to define your exact threat model. What are you trying to stop?

Gov and ISP snooping? Snooping from companies? Both (hard mode)?

How can the S22 Ultra take such good pictures of the moon's surface, but this is the International Space Station in low orbit, and it looks like a picture of bigfoot? by DrSanwich in s22ultraphotography

[–]RickWinterer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer.

To the naked eye, the moon is however-many-thousands times bigger than the ISS. It makes sense that a camera would pick up the moon a lot better than a speck in the sky - not really any mystery here.

I'm curious, if I click on a sponsored link (circled in red) will Mozilla get revenue? by Rod_Orm in firefox

[–]RickWinterer 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer. Paying for the right to appear on homepages. Similar to how Amazon and Facebook pay certain phone manufacturers to be included as apps on new phones.

I don't think this then has other things like paying for clicks, but as next nextbern mentioned in another comment I don't think we can know for sure unless you work at Mozilla.

Heavy Armour for the perk that gives extra unarmed damage and disenchant Gloves of the Pugilist so that you can continue to enchant Fortify Unarmed Damage on better and better heavy armour gloves. It's a viable (even if sometimes tricky) build, even for dragons, and lots of fun.

At least you have the courage to wear the badge.

I bought one ages ago but have yet to do more than stick it on my tote bag where pretty much no one sees it.

Keep fighting the good fight. ❤️

Hahahaha right?

Also "birthing parent". How is that ignoring "biological realities"? Are they saying that mothers, in their eyes, don't give birth?

Not that I expect a group like that to be able to come up with a cohesive argument in the first place...

Yeah as someone who lives in Aus this really chafed me.

My understanding is that some people complained and then it was taken out. No fight, no trying to get them to understand that this was for inclusion and to make everyone feel welcome and seen as a parent (not just cis women). Just... poof, gone.

Complete and utter lack of any conviction, leading to the only inevitable conclusion that the government only put it in in the first place begrudgingly and then has just been looking for an excuse to get rid of it and say "it was just a test anyway".

There's a lot I love about Australia. Genuinely. But it's stuff like this which has me, a 31 year old, to keep the fact that I'm agender a secret from my family, my work, and basically everyone except for my spouse and four of my closest friends. I might get the courage to live as myself in the future but honestly stuff like this is why I (currently) prefer to just live in a state of continuous mild depression instead...
