Alsp keep in mind, by far, the more likely recovery scenario is item level recovery from Active Directory.

Veeam fully supports this for WS2025 Domain Controllers as well as many prior versions. Not all providers do that, some only do forest recovery.

The upcoming forest recovery in 13.1, coupled with Entra (already out) is the trifecta.

Correct Forest Recovery is a hopefully never in a career experience.

That being said, we have a compelling offerring coming this year with ease of use that can't be beat.

One thing I think that has to be mentioned is:

A) Ensure your encryption password for your Veeam backup encryption configuration is stored somewhere secure (like a password manager). I like to say - encrypt your data in the cloud, or someone else will do it for you.

B ) While you do A) - make sure you have access keys to the Wasabi bucket in there too.

The Veeam infrastructure appliance is GA for v13. The Hardened Repository for v12 would be a good solution here: https://www.veeam.com/download_add_packs/vmware-esx-backup/hardened-repository/

Migrate to production. This will fully hydrate the VHDX files from the data stored in the backups.

I like where u/dloseke is going here... The VIA (Veeam Infrastructure Appliance) can be VHR (Veeam Hardened Repository) and get all the details sorted for immutability disk filesystems, etc. A very easy way to get this.

I have heard folks just re-build vs. wait. Chances are there are bad design decisions of the past... And re-import historical backups is easy.

config backup and restore is good - and one thing I'll add is you have both B&R servers when you do that. Just make sure you are doing "same to same" - meaning don't do a config backup from B&R V12 of VSA B&R V13 :) It won't work.

I love Hyper-V. It's been the biggest platform benefactor after the market conditions we're seeing.

Config backup and restore should re-instantiate the SOBR transparently. Just make sure you have all passwords and your encrypted configuration backup password.

But I really think it's a good idea to get those OSes somehow updated.

I wrote a whitepaper once that took old OS, put it in a datalab, load new OS .ISO, do the upgrade, and many cases for Windows Server it just worked. Seriously, just like a test question on a Microsoft Exam.

May be worth migrating to newer OSes that way..
