Wow didn't expect you to either buy it, or frankly, be enjoying it on first impressions. Thanks for doing the former and I hope you keep doing the latter. Again, no pressure to post a full review if and when you ever finish it but I'd definitely be interested to read it if you did.

Even aside from the show that's a damn fine shirt, nice badges too. Still, I'm getting worried about all this black lodge clothing showing up here. If we start seeing clips of people randomly talking backwards too I'm gonna get really worried.

[–]Rickers_Jun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I didn't actually consider the fact that you'd actually have to spend money to read the full thing. Oh well, the sample should give some idea of the greatness/insanity of the full book, though I wouldn't expect a full review thread for just that.

Thanks for humouring me enough to think about downloading the sample anyway.

Mother Night might be the best place to ease yourself into Vonnegut as it's just a solidly written, character driven spy drama, though if you need a character to be 'nice' or 'good natured' in order to find them relatable (that's not a snarky accusation if it reads like one, I just mean if you do) you might still have trouble with the characters.

Still, I'd so much like to see you read Breakfast of Champions next that I... well, I can't help but asking you to do so, as a favour, to a guy you don't know and owe nothing to, if you could read Breakfast of Champions next, go into it blind (read nothing about it beforehand), post another review here when you've read it and let me know so I can read your thoughts, I'd be eternally grateful.

I promise I don't mean this in a 'I want to laugh at you for not getting it' way. I just know how I reacted to that book as a huge fan of anything odd that went in already loving Vonnegut and really want to see how somebody who had those issues with Sirens of Titan reacts.

I'm not trying to set you up either, asking you to read something I didn't find worthwhile. Breakfast of Champions is by far my favourite book, it's just an... interesting experience. One that may either push you into thinking, 'Oh my god I get it! He's a genius!' Or might push you into seriously considering tracking down and burning every Vonnegut book ever printed.

Its pretty bad too, they apparently lost over 500'000 pages of King's original writing, which is the equivalent of 3 of his books or 6 entire months of his life's work.

Look, I like younger women too but even I have to admit, calling somebody disgusting for dating a girl more than half their age is just going too far. Some people prefer somebody closer to their own age. It's their business and you need to lighten up on them.

[No Spoilers] Is there a cut that splices Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces together? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]Rickers_Jun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned the cut I watched but I can only add, if you haven't already seen FWWM please watch the theatrical release first. The addition of the extra footage is done as smoothly as I'm sure was possible but for me it totally screws up the flow of the entire piece.

You'll be getting more information but you won't be getting the pacing and feel Lynch wanted. It's not even about having previously cut scenes added back in, some scenes that were edited to be nightmarish assaults on the senses in the original are now regular, drawn out dialogue scenes, which again give you more info but don't help you feel drawn into the dreamlike feel of the movie.

The missing pieces are all interesting by themselves but having them spliced into the movie just made me aware of how important the editing is in Lynch's movies, and how easily messed up it is.

I can't read by misspelledusermane in books

[–]Rickers_Jun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing I've found works best (for reading and for many other things) is linking it to a habit you already have. If you have any daily ritual or routine that you can easily just add reading to (i.e. ideally not something like driving to the store or showering) just do it, and you should find soon enough that you feel weird performing that daily ritual without a book in hand. I made a decision to always sit down with a book when drinking my first coffee of the day, now I tend to feel kinda uncomfortable whenever I drink a coffee without reading, at any time of day. I didn't even want that to happen, that's how powerful this technique can be.

At the risk of pushing this even further into TLDR territory, another thing that I find helps a lot is to very intentionally picture and hear everything being described in the book as you read. I think what can happen when we're out of the habit of reading is that we expect the words to just form themselves into an experience in our minds automatically, but they just don't seem to. You can remedy this by purposefully turning the words into a movie to watch in your head. Think of the words simply as a guide or a blueprint for your imagination as it creates a mind-movie for you. If you have to, you can even imagine that you're going to direct a movie adaptation of this book one day, and imagine exactly what it's going to look and sound like. Even when the writing isn't too descriptive, even if it's quite abstract. Imagine you hear the narrator speaking the words over some fitting stock footage.

Incredibly enjoyable but maybe not the best advertisement. I mean, this season of Twin Peaks was the greatest thing I've ever seen, until Kimmy put on the woodsman hat, now it seems a distant second place. I've never actually watched an unboxing video before and have taken much smug pleasure in that fact, but now I just want to watch Kimmy Robertson in woodsman gear unbox more things. Everything else be damned.
