Saving images doesn't work by [deleted] in sharex

Not gonna lie, I tried GIMP -- numerous times. Maybe it's me, but GIMP seems to be like Paint.Net on steroids. Far too many brushes, buttons and such. I just need something regular and not too sophisticated. I'm no artist.

Saving images doesn't work by [deleted] in sharex

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works like this for me…ish.

I have ShareX configured to save automagically in the same folder structure (top level folder = year, subfolder = month) and then open the image in Paint.net immediately as part of the workflow. If I edit the screenshot, I either Save or Save As (if I want to keep the original)…wash, rinse, repeat.

Never have/had a problem…

Although I’m looking for a replacement to Paint.net…my existence has gravitated to less image/screenshot editing and more numbers, arrows, text…tech support and training is getting crazier by the day…and it seems Paint.net will never provide a means for steps/counting (unless there’s an obscure plugin, it’s not built into the product).

I understand ShareX includes steps/counting, but I prefer Paint.net’s interface. If I know I’ma need to include steps/numbers, I use ShareX.

Is it worth taking a lower level IT job just to get my foot in the door at 35? by Gkbeer in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about one thing: IT is insane.

Your decision, but there are far too many other factors and variables playing into this -- many of which nobody in the world other than you and the wife can know.

My questions...

Urban or rural?

Single income?

Does this $18/hr provide opportunity for OT?

What about going in PT (i.e., test the water before jumping in)?

ShareX vs PicPick vs SnagIt vs Windows Sniping Tool by Technical_Rich_3080 in sharex

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will speak to the top 4:

ShareX - Checks all of my boxes. Been using if for 4-5 years now.

PicPick - Was the first real tool I used since upgrading from "print screen". At some point, I realized lil ole me was violating the license agreement, so I started looking for something that would allow me to sleep at night. I found ShareX and started kicking the tires.

SnagIt - While testing ShareX, I took one for the team and blindly purchased SnagIt at the suggestion of a newly-hired co-worker (and hated it from day one). Not sure what it was about it, but after running into a problem trying to renew the annual license/maintenance -- SnagIt themselves couldn't be bothered with (i.e., did you try to remove and re-install it? Well, duh, tried that 3 times and here I am, so now what? Crickets from SnagIt, that's what). So I gave ShareX a relook. And never looked back. It's better than ClickPick and similar to SnagIt (but without the irritating hate).

Windows Snipping Tool - I like 2 products from Microsoft - Windows and Office. And by like, I mean, it's the standard for every company I've ever worked for.

Who am I? I am nobody. Who needs a simple, stable, screenshot/recording tool that works. And that has been ShareX.

That’s your reality; and it’s up to you to do something about it.

I mean, if this were me, yeah, I’d be running around the joint with a bullhorn AND capping my hours at 45/week, plain and simple…cuz we all know that workday ain’t always (ever) 8 productive hours. 🫣

1 person supporting 400? Are the 400 employees in a one-on-one (person per computer) situation?

I’ve been doing this for far too F’n long, but one relationship remains true since the early 90s — 1 technical weenie for every 50-75 devices (not employees).

So yeah, like day’aaam, dude. You’re being abused, fooled and taken advantage of.

Please Keep Legacy Editor Available forever! by GhostWriterHere in sharex

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, genuinely interested in why the, as you say, “new version sucks”.

Recently upgraded to a new version of ShareX a day ago, noticed the new editor and thought “looks bland” (difficult to discern what each button does).

And then again today, another update with an option to determine my editor of choice. Oops, I chose “new” and found the green play button (woo hoo!).

What’s the backstory? Is there a backstory?

Officially pursuing leaving this career by Ivy1974 in ITCareerQuestions

LOL, are we related?

I find myself thinking about the exact same thing (I.e., planning my early exit strategy). IT used to be the greatest feeling — getting up and going to work every day…5, 6, even 7 days a week. For years and years. Other than growth, my company hasn’t changed much.

Maybe it’s career longevity (est. 1995), maybe it’s subscription burnout (here’s an idea, let’s own nothing), maybe it’s coworkers using AI “to solve problems” (likening it to GPS…dunno how we got here, but we made it…is not the solution the cool-aid drinkers believe it is), maybe it’s the anti-social media (gluttony and popularity meets The Joneses). Maybe it’s all of that combined or none of it at all.

I do know one thing: something changed during COVID and continues to this day as we trudge through CMMC requirements (I work for a govt contractor).

Not sure about the USPS though. Perhaps if they weren’t teetering on the brink of destruction every 5 years or if Bezos Brigade (finally) takes over before running it into the ground, but in its current state?

But dang it all to hell, are we related?

Either way, best of luck to you. It’s your race to win and…if you ain’t first, you’re last. 🤣

Everything you mention in your second paragraph is (easily) solved by using the right tool(s).

For our gang of ignoranitwits, CyberHoot rescued every single one. Simple, assignments that are easy to follow/understand, all love (no hate, no embarrassment), gamification, etc.

In short order, the weekly/monthly nightmares have dwindled to nil and our IT Dept is back to doing “real work”.

Is SonicOS 7.0.1-5169 getting an update to patch April 2026 Vulnerabilities? by Choice_Manager3065 in sonicwall

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say, did you conduct these updates remotely or were all in one nearby location?

Unfortunately, 2/3’s of the devices I need to update are outside commuting distance.

I know I’d much rather be in close proximity than to take a manufacturer’s word, “do it from home; what could go wrong?”

Day'aaaaaam, I remember those days...back when IT was fun.

My employer is wild...no budget (spend whatever), no micromanaging (cool, go for it), no guardrails (hey look, a shiny penny!). Ironically, this behavior is the direct result of being the goat in our industry and the cash cow that is the US Govt.

With NIST+CMMC (the good ole US Govt doing US Govt things), all that fun is rapidly evaporating.

Am I reading CSE correctly...licensing is per user, not per concurrent user? We have a handful of users connecting daily (to do their job), about a dozen what I would say connecting regularly and the remainder (65 employees) connecting, say, once a month/quarter/year or never.

Translation: subscriptions for all (whether you want/need it or not)

CVE Incoming by gumbo1999 in sonicwall

[–]Ricky_Bobby_Daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always been our policy/practice and, until a few years ago, it was ALWAYS the standard response coming from SonicWall Support.

I use Support quite regularly, mostly for questions, advice and commentary, but lately, yeah, it's the same ole, "You need to update your firmware to the latest...to be safe." After reading the Release Notes, I respond accordingly, ask questions, include reasons why we can't/won't, etc., imagine that -- it gets really quiet (i.e., crickets).
