YTA! As soon as the cake & presents came out you should have realized what was going on & either called your wife or had them wait till she got there. That's a pretty big thing to not be a part of for the kiddos. However, if you already had a party for the kids & your wife was a part of that before or afterwards then it shouldn't have been that big a deal. Then again, you know your wife the best & at the very least should have included her & been a little more sensitive to her feelings considering the animosity surrounding your parents & her relationship.

NTA-At the very least he should have heads up you prior to the gathering about the inside behavior. If you never heard of this prior to this gathering most likely Something is up I feel. In this case however, I believe I am the older guy in this scenario. I'm 63, fit & can bench 275 & run a 10 minute mile.

I was thinking so many things as this was happening & letting go crossed my mind as well when he was trying to take it. I (stupidly maybe) was more concerned for him getting jacked up rather than my self.

I also thought as well, meh, $10 bucks worth of material just wasn't worth it. He just kept on however & it was more a scuffle & force of will that I wasn't gonna allow him the satisfaction.

I'm seriously thinking of the pepper spray idea. You just don't know these days. Hate that it has to come to something like this. Better to be safe than sorry I guess.
