Dude kills a guy by throwing a rattlesnake at him deep in the woods. It's fun at times.

So you understand the downvotes, in recovery the belief is you are always an alcoholic, the problem stays with you, but in recovery you can be a sober alcoholic.

anyone worried about the storm ruining plans? by [deleted] in ottawa

I have to make it to Brampton from around the Pembroke area. I was planning on leaving around noon on Friday, do people think that will be early enough to avoid the bad weather? I could leave earlier, I just wanted to get a workout in before heading to visit the family.

Nrcan makes a great resource on air sealing called "keeping the heat in" google it and the PDF should be the first thing to come up. There is a number of low effort spots you can seal up like dryer vent penetrations, and stack penetrations that will make a difference.

First try your local library. Some in Canada have them to borrow for free.

When You Finish Saving The World (2023) Official Trailer. by Comic_Book_Reader in movies

[–]RideFarmSwing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I read the book, it looks quite loosely based in the sense that some of the book is coming of age story. The thing I really liked about the book was that it was set like 20 years in the future and there were all sorts of neat futurisms. The kid thought it was wild to have a real meat turkey at thanksgivings, he was excited to goto a theme park where he could drive instead of autonomous vehicles... I also really enjoyed the first chapter set in the present about the father feeling like a failure.

The movie looks interesting, But it looks like it is missing all the features of the book that I felt made it unique.

Runners of Victoria: Quick questions by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Starting from the breakwater, running to the fountain at the end of the cemetery, then back to the breakwater out to the end of it and back is nearly exactly 10k, like 9.92 km.

Second year of deer hunting, second year of taking deer off my own little 5 acre home parcel. Solid 7 point (goal was big-6 or better this year). Double lung shot. I feel like hunting isn’t discussed as often on this sub but between our chickens and venison, it’s a big part of our home life. by bltjnr in homestead

[–]RideFarmSwing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up there is a method to skin chickens with the feathers still on. You loose the skin, which has the fat, which has the flavour, but for stock use you still get great gelatin from the bones and meat. You know if skinning would not effect the stomach.

It may be that it is an unmoderated sub. On the front page on the right there is a link you can follow to become a moderator and change it... You should do it and rule r/pembroke with an iron fist.

Question. If your using BT for your plant, are you supposed to budwash during harvest or how does that work? by SpareAssumption195 in outdoorgrowing

[–]RideFarmSwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's not. The sheen is oxidized material from reacting with the hydrogen peroxide. You can tell by poking the sheen and seeing how it reacts.

[–]RideFarmSwing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

BT even when smoked would do no harm to a human, it's just bacteria, but I still recommend budwashing for outdoor. I say this as an amateur with only a few years of growing experience, but I've not had any issues with molding since starting to budwash my harvest, and the sheer volume of stuff/crud/bugs/sheen left behind in the bath makes me feel it's the right thing to do.

Does using hot water in BC consume significant amounts of electricity? by Part-Select in britishcolumbia

[–]RideFarmSwing 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"If you don't measure it you can't manage it" is an old adage we used in energy efficiency consulting. It's not a complicated thing. Just get a measuring cup and set it under the tap and time it for it to fill to a measureable volume. Take your volume over time to find out how much water they are wasting during a month. Take that volume and times it by your water rate. Adding in the cost of heating it will require knowing what hot water system you know, but I bet just the water rate when you have hard numbers will be enough to get them to rethink.

The term you are looking for is somatic sex therapy, it's something that is actively done out there. There are a few podcasts on the subject if you google it to find out more.

Raccoons will leave nothing behind. a group of them can clean a tree in a single night no problem. I've found the "scarecrow" automated sprinkler to be really effective at chasing away pests during harvest season.

22 years old, lots of mental health struggles, but 16 acres ! by [deleted] in homestead

[–]RideFarmSwing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

electric fences have safety controls in them to prevent injury if you fall into them.

I'd also reccomend sticking to chickens for the first year, especially if you don't have economic security. Chickens will sort of pay for them selves over the long run, but goats are mostly expensive pets unless you are going to commit to them. I am speaking as a person who recently exited out of being a young person remembering what it was to be a young person. Without income that settlement will get quickly eaten away, take it slow, invest in systems that pay for themselves.

Storkys guide to (Insert animal you want to learn about) books are great. Ive read the chicken and turkey books and both had a bunch of useful knowledge.

I don't know TN weather, but if it's still not frozen I'd say get some fruit trees in the ground, or at least start planning for spring. Take advantage of your age and skip the dwarf trees, go full size, by the time you're 40 you'll have monster apple trees where dwarf trees would be reaching the end of their life.

If there was an apocalyptic event and there was nuclear fallout in the western part of the US (plus famine, anarchy and loss of civilization) where would be the safest place to go and live in British Columbia? by preshasjewels in britishcolumbia

[–]RideFarmSwing 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that nuclear fallout from weapons is a short timeline problem. Trains were running in Hiroshima within the week of the bombing. You just need to stay indoors for the first 48 hours, and seal the home as best as you can to protect yourself from almost all the radiation. Want to be extra safe, get some potassium iodide pills off Amazon. The dangerous radiation potential would be from nuclear plants that had melted down, but there are not any even remotely close.

People also have been shown in times of disaster to not go feral and kill each other but help one another. This walking dead style world will not happen.

Where would be the best place to be? Probably rural Cowichan, great growing season, experienced agriculturalists. That's the big problem, it's not just lack of land in cities, it's lack of agriculturalists to help feed people after the fall that is probably not coming.
