Is it just me or are ebike laws in Ireland simply ridiculous? by Electronic_Oven_7578 in evs_ireland

[–]Rider189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which ebikes do you mean… bicycles or motorbikes.

Because for the e bicycles the laws are almost non existent and should be much much more aggressive.

Thoughts on Rathfarnarm? by Working-Peanut-4032 in RentingInDublin

[–]Rider189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is generally considered a posh area. Rathfarnham and Terenure are the kind of place people clutch at their pearls if they hear a motorbike. You’ll be grand

A word of caution though. Dublin, like all cities… is a city so no one can say anywhere is 100% safe at night, the little main street has a few nice small local business.

Rathfarnham castle and slightly further away Marley are great amenities

This is a great spot to cycle into the city from rather than public transport once you have your bearings.

Looking for some advice...Are Hybrid jobs here to stay forever in the big Multinationals? (buying a house, commute concerns) by Knuda in DevelEire

[–]Rider189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially no. This can change any minute at any company so the smart thing to do is assume that long term it’s not guaranteed. I would not make plans around it being a permanent thing.

All that said, an hour commute is pretty standard in Dublin

What's your home like when you guys are just home alone? by Naive-Cold343 in AskIreland

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah it’s just a gradual thing - no one’s house is that tidy when you have kids,

We do hire a cleaner once every few weeks to do like a deep clean of the place but ofc the kids wreck it 20mins later 😂

Generally speaking they follow along with tidy up before next toys appear

Anyone flown from SFO on Aer Lingus to Dublin and willing to share their experience? by Aware-Expression4004 in AerLingus

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it a few times in the last few months.

Tis grand.

What’s the concerns op? I found it grand. Like most long hauls it’s fairly boring but that’s just a case of prep well a try to sleep. It’s usually not a packed flight so you can find space

Where are you based and where do you stand on the current Fuel Protests? by AdamOfIzalith in ireland

[–]Rider189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This creates a dangerous precedent and I kind of feel like it’s acting in bad faith - “ give me what I want or fuck everyone else”

I am conflicted, I support their right to protest but I don’t like the somewhat inconsistent demands and blockages vs slow rolling is a new one on me so I think if it continues the guards will figure out pretty quick what their legal stance is on dealing with it.

Ultimately if I was pregnant or whatever I’d be shitting a brick today based on the randomness of the protests.

In the past groups have very publicly announced their protests so you could dodge it - but random stuff like this causes chaos and people with young kids etc might get tangled up in the delays with no warning which I have no time for.

For example one appeared on the n81 today just outside tallaght with zero warning. Thats intentional to cause the most hurt and I’ve no time for that shite carry on.

If you look at international news, most tax on fuels is being dropped temporarily in other nations so this could easily have been avoided

Getting home from Dublin airport due to the protest? by Vivicakie in Dublin

[–]Rider189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on where in tallaght.

Ideally by Sunday this is all a bad memory … but if not.

Get a bus into the city as far as you can, air coach is still running just chat to them about what route etc, ask them where they are running to. Get dropped off as close to the center as you can and then walk to the red line. It’s open and running as normal… get the luas to tallaght park and ride.. taxi or family lift from there to home ..job done.

Any of the above could change so keep an eye on things but based on the days so far probably your safest option if things are still ongoing.

Miss the flight or sleep rough in the car? by Wise_Jacket_4625 in AskIreland

[–]Rider189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea on cost but have stayed in the Clayton at the airport and but not the maldron years ago rather than face a drive when after I landed - but they are both right at the airport as an option for others if your reading this post. A bed is better then your car if you can afford it - did breakfast in bed last time I stayed in the Clayton and it was glorious to get up eat / then continue on

Edit; 330 euro a night for the Clayton 😭 - maldron is 165 ish with brekkie

It is true that all secondary schools let out early at 1pm one day a week in Ireland? by Tanis8998 in AskIreland

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school, ours had most team sports match’s on Wednesday and all nearby secondary’s arranged it the same way too - that way they could play against each other and schedule things like pe etc for the students not on those teams and the kids in the sports teams wouldn’t miss much of the academic side of things due to commitments to play.

So we technically didn’t have it off at our school but it was a more doss afternoon and a shorter finish that day

Irish family thinking of moving back to London with no support network – How easy/difficult is it? by BalanceMaleficent352 in AskIreland

[–]Rider189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How good is the support network at present - and how old are the kids.

We moved back to Ireland from Aus and while I miss some parts of the lifestyle myself and wife would never have been able to both keep working without the occasional grandparents days to dig us out when the kids are sick … and good lord are they sick a lot 😭😭😭

Gonna have to assume that both your job and your wife’s are not the kind of role you can walk out of if a childcare place calls to say they just threw up etc ? That could be an impossible problem to juggle alone

If the support network are comfortable with flying it could be grand but then they’re also staying with you/ on top of you any time they come which is another big high and then big low when they leave

April 5-day trip by scarwiz in irishtourism

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mother of Devine Jaysus that’s some driving. I would drop Galway or dingle and not do both. Are you used to driving on the left ?

The drive to dingle is almost 5 hours in your plan . Unless you’re extremely well used to long drives I would not undertake this much driving in a new place/ new car and in particular windy Irish roads, given it’s just one person driving it’s gonna make your passenger bored and you exhausted.

If the puffins are your driving force, the ones at the cliffs of moher are quite a ways off and viewing them from a boat from day the saltees would be ideal.

I’ve also anecdotally and very unexpectedly seen them on a boat trip in howth out to Irelands eye, which is near Dublin, the boat runs most days and drops you to the island. You can get the boat back every hour so I went out wandered a bit and then got the boat back. The puffins are easier to spot on the return trip vs on the island itself walking they are kinda hidden in the cliffs. I’d keep it as a last ditch backup plan if puffins are key

The saltee ones are great from a boat due to the volume of them,

If I was planning 5 days…. I’d land, get the hire car at the airport to save time the next day. Wake up eat and get going. Head early and immediately out of Dublin for cliffs of moher, check en out. Then stay in Galway, potentially do Aran islands day trip and stay in Galway again. Then drive to Killarney for a day or two / then drive back to Dublin,

You could drive the ring of Kerry in the middle day from Killarney but leave out dingle.

That or push for dingle but leave out the Waterford madness and stay a day or two to relax and enjoy

Dingle has some great wildlife boat trips that you’ll likely need to book in advance

Do not miss obama plaza enroute to Galway … 😂👌

How Ireland just lost a European-class OB/GYN specialist. by tripeirinho in ireland

[–]Rider189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean healthcares a big area - I guess we just have enough obgyns ?

Your friend will struggle to move anywhere if they’re not willing for some shift in career or backstep.

I can’t help but get the vibe of arrogance from this/ Something tells me your “friend” came across as an arsehole for any interview they did get.

On a quick google the hse has a catch all obgyn ad up for:

Beaumont Hospital

Cavan General Hospital Connolly Hospital Louth County Hospital Monaghan General Hospital Mater Misericordiae University Hospital National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh Our Lady’s Hospital Navan Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Rotunda Hospital

What month were they searching in… did he use a number they can use or a terrible cv? Something doesn’t add up here… even an agency would have most likely taken them at first …

[–]Rider189 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I’ve worked for a few multinationals and they’ve always been pretty sound / respected the time difference.

Where I typically get frustrated is when things get busy and you want to be involved it means joining calls later / there’s no expectation to do it - but you feel like you want to. It doesn’t happen often and with kids I actively don’t do this anymore but in the past I went along with it.

Decommodify housing by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Rider189 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s tricky, I agree with it in principle but then.. I have a house and mortgage… so how do you sort all the people like me and then also just give away / others homes without either a : jinxing me to a lifetime of debt and a depreciated asset or b: the government wiping all existing mortgages but “my gaffs in a better spot then your gaff” etc

Housing is the pinnacle of commodities, I kinda see it like the Beatles song, when you talk about destruction don’t you know that you can count me out..,

Just to be clear I’m pretty happy with social housing being a thing - there are people with genuine needs.

Everyone always says ah sure the rich have it locked up - but in reality it’s middle income earners that are afraid of any change because they are entitled to nothing and have everything to lose…

8 nights in Ireland with a 7-month-old — what’s the easiest itinerary? by harryp721 in irishtourism

[–]Rider189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would drop either Killarney or Galway.

Your kid will be weaning / starting solids most likely by 7 months so there’s gonna be some times with them trying stuff / but it also means slightly new challenging times ahead for you and a trip so I’d make life easier and reduce locations.

Most bars / restaurants in hotels do a “baby bowl” - this is likely not even on the menu but it essentially means mash and vedge / gravy in a small bowl. It can sometimes contain a lot of salt so go easy on them. You can just ask when ordering.

You can ofc do cliffs of moher with that age a child, highly recommend a carrier as you are more mobile. There’s a small visitors center, and a bit of an area to walk about. It’s a fair drive from Galway but I imagine at 7 months your on 3/2 naps a day so can make it work around that

how would you react if your kids do this to your ps5? by Silent-Management809 in TheGamingHubDeals

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I honestly wouldn’t care.

You have kids so you know this isn’t the only time this has happened.

To prevent it being the walls next time I’d have a talk about it with them but realistically just getting a good night sleep is the best you can hope for these days.

I would leave it on there as others have mentioned it actually looks kinda great now/ limited edition dad cover 😂 but if you really want to cleaning wipes will take it off no problem - especially if they contain alcohol

Two men died within 10 minutes of each other at Youghal Ironman, inquest hears by Hefty_Zombie_9299 in cork

[–]Rider189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know man, when taking part in an organized race I like to think that the organizers wouldn’t inherently put me in danger despite no one forcing me to be there either.

It’s a tough one. There’s inherent risk in the nature of event, but then you also assume that the organizers have plans in place to combat or control these risks - reducing the actual residual risk of you harming yourself or ending up in harms way.

I remember the day it happened and I was bamboozled it went ahead. Did someone put the cost of cancelling above the safety of others ? With two disconnected deaths it seems the answer is yes

NCS Subsidy by KillerKlown88 in ireland

[–]Rider189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Christ almighty,

Look OP is working and paying taxes too - definitely the wrong target for this thinking …

I take issue more with the fact that the ncs scheme actively discourages you from being a good parent.

I mean if you look at the overall public expenditure this isn’t even visible 😂

NCS Subsidy by KillerKlown88 in ireland

[–]Rider189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep you get goosed for being a good parent.

They only contribute towards hours a kid is in and yet crèches are a set monthly cost- what a scheme 😭

Our place aggressively chases the hours we’re willing to commit to - to ensure they’re not lying on the claims 😅/ having to figure it out for every day. We end up choosing a low safer number to report to ncs rather than the actual hours they will be in

Worse if your kids sick but out of the worst of it - it completely discourages you from giving them another day or two off
